UP, The Iron Age said today that a steel price increase of $6 a ton reportedly has been talked over as a means of ending the nation's largest steel strike. The trade magazine referred to the figure as a "bait" which would be used to assure acceptance of President Truman's compromise suggestion of an 18 i cent3 an hour wage increase.

The national metal working paper said the chances seem even less slim now, but that unless the administration finds some new basis for a resumption of steel management-labor negotiations, the current strike "will be long and bitter." This view, which has yet to be confirmed in official quarters, but which was apparently largely responsible for the turnabout on Tuesday, has been strengthened by broad tape 6torie out of Washington to the effect that whether or not the steel companies accept President Truman's proposed wage settlement the price of steel would be advanced on an average of $4 a ton before the close of January. This, it is assumed, would leave the way clear for further increases, to absorb a large percentage of the impending wage boosts. Inflationary Trend The inflationary implications of Washington developments are well exemplified in the trend of commodity prices the last few days.
