For the benefit of readers of La Stein who have been confused and bewildered by her literary reiterations, this play is not written in her usual style. There's a story behind this premiere which is worth telling.

JACK OF ALL TRADE3 Jack Roper, who once fought Joe Louis for the heavyweight championship, plays a night-club bouncer in PRC's "Crime in the Night." Incidentally, Hugn Beaumont, who portrays the detective in that film, is a ministerial student. He preaches on Sunday and acts through the week, giving the money he earns from pictures to charity. I've just framed three of my favorite fellows: Clark Gable, Cary Grant and Bing Crosby.

Their pictures are smiling down at me a3 I write this. Gilbert Roland has returned from Mexico where he's been making a picture and goes into another "Cisco Kid" for Monogram. meet Miss Stein and did. The author spoke of her new play, a story of the French Resistance. Then the four had an inspiration. They cabled Miss Stein "could they do the play in the U.S.A.?" The answer was "yes." Then they cabled Gilmor Brown, would he do it? Again the answer was "yes." At Miss Stein's request the foursome will play major roles in the play which is set to open March 13. 'Birthday' The Actors Laboratory Theater announces premiere of an original play, "Birthday," by Viola Brothers Shore, short-story writer.

The drama will be shown exclusively to friends of the cast on week-ends, opening next Friday and also playing Saturday night. Jules Dassin, M.G.M. director, and Joseph Losey directed the piece. Karen Morley has a featured role. John Van Druten's "The Damask Cheek" is promised at the Call 'Board Theater for Fred MacMurray AUlIT Hollywood again performs a miracle, bringing to millions the greatest musical artists of our day.

Boris Morros and Bill Le Baron have lined up the biggest cast in history for their Technicolor musical, "Carnegie Hall," which will be released through United Artists. Already signed are John Charles Ihomas, anscha El-man, Vladimir Horowitz, Jose Iturbi, Lauritz Melchior, Bruno Walter and the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, Serge Koussevitzky and the Boston Symphony, Walter Damrosch and his symphony orchestra, Alec Templeton, Lily Pons and Artur Rubinstein. On the popular side will be Tommy Dorsey, Vaughn Monroe and Benny Goodman with their orchestras. All of the above have appeared in Carnegie Hall. Morros soon leaves for Rome, where, with special permission, he'll film and record the Vatican Choir against a replica of Carnegie Hall built for the purpose.

The picture begins with the opening of the hall in 1891 and comes down to the present. It'll center around a love story played by well-known stars, who have not yet been picked. IRISH AYES Elizabeth Patterson plays housekeeper to Barry Fitzgerald in "Welcome, Stranger," starring Bing Crosby. Elliott Nugent directs. Jan Clayton, of "Showboat," already has two pictures lined up for her at Metro.

He'll return to New York shortly to continue working with Orson Welles on their musical. Bob Paige, returning from his New York vacation, turned down a part in the next Abbott and Costello picture.

It was so bad Bob's stand-in said he couldn't afford to stand in for it. So for the first time Bob's on suspension. Ann Andre and Hal McMur-rin, of "The Song of Norway," It Starts WEDNESDAY! Terde Grof e' Career Spark Plugs Musical BY EDWIN SCHALLEKT "The Life and Music df Ferde Grofe" will be turned into a film eaga under the aegis of Phil L. Ryan, who has been associated with Pat O'Brien in the production of independent features. Grofe will be presented as an adventurous hero, ranging through various occupations and activities in this coastal region, including the oil and gold, and various other industrial fields.

Grofe is expected to have bobby-soxer, as well as more serious appeal. The inspiration for his bigger compositions like "Grand Canyon" suite, "Mississippi," "Pittsburgh," "Black Gold," will be revealed. The idea has jelled so well that Ryan has Russell Wade of R.K.O. in mind for the top role, if he can arrange to borrow him. DUSTY CAST LIKELY TO GLITTER If it's all true what I hear, the picture "Dusty" at 20th will have a rather stunning cast.

Of course, this involves some rather difficult borrowing but then the studio can arrange those things, as it has proved in the past. Anyway, I've heard Maureen O'Hara, Butch Jenkins of M.G.M. and even that kingpin, Ray Milland of Paramount, mentioned for this feature, which will be directed by Henry King. It's from the magazine story by Carl Foreman, adapted successively by Martin Berkeley and Eugene Ling, who were identified with "Shock." ROGERS TIES IX WITH WESTERN FESTIVAL It's all in the bag for Roy Rogers to appear In "Helldorado" as his next starring subject, and the Republic feature will revolve around the annual festival held at Las Vegas. Edward J.

White, the producer, is making arrangements for shooting special sequences. Tying up the Rogers film with the celebration gives it much more importance than the customary western, that being the aim nowadays at the studio with this box-office champion. From Daniel T. O'Shea, president of Vanguard, comes the announcement that Charles L. Glett, heretofore general manager of the Selznick studio, has been elected a vice-president of Vanguard and will function as general manager of all Selznick enterprises.

ACADEMY TUNESMITHS SIGNED BY PRC "Missouri Hayride," which Josef Berne is to produce at PRC, is to be extra-glorified with hit tunes per present prospects. Signed to write them are Kim Gannon and Walter Kent, known for their "White Cliffs of Dover" and "Always in My Heart," and who also were nominees for Academy honors for two successive years. They will write seven songs for the new feature. While he is concentrating on his picture, "Meet Me at now, with Betty Jane Rhodes lately added to the cast, as well as Ella Logan, Parkyakarkus may travel to Japan to entertain troops, and secure movie footage. He also expects to conduct a popularity contest among men of the camps, using 16-mm.

Hal Fin-berg is assisting him in his film project, MARGO MAY BE COTTEN'S CINEMA ROMANCE Return of Margo to the screen may be imminent. I hear that Director William Keighley is interested in having her appear in "Holiday" as Joseph Cotten's girl friend. Margo expects to spend more time in Hollywood since her marriage. Leo McCarey, the director, will be given a film award via radio by foreign film correspondents in New York tonight. It seems they liked "Bells of St.

Mary's" the best. Kenny O'Morrison, formerly with the Mercury Theater, and also "Winged Victory," ha3 signed with Paramount. Don Cossack Group Sings BY ISABEL MORSE JONES Singing gayly and dancing lightly, the Gen. Platoff Don Cossacks filled the Philharmonic Auditorium with a happy audience at the matinee yesterday afternoon. The hall was filled with youngsters having their first taste of choral music.

It was a good program to begin on. The director, Nicholas Ko-strukoff, is a big, handsome Russian who knows his business and his men. They sing with very few indications from him and they sing well. Natural Exuberance The voices are big ones and the energy expended is tremendous. In Russia, he-men sing and dance and are proud of it.
