tftyi-asjif- part in 3 Chagall's Etchings, Lithographs Shown A group of etchings and lithographs by Marc Chagall, mostly early works, are on view at Zeitlin Brugge to Jan. 15. These treat of Russian village legends in this artist's whimsical style. Chagall, who worked most of his life in Paris, now lives in New York. The prints were brought to this country from Germany.

Friars scooped the travel film field when he obtained the first pictures of Parlcutin, the new Mexican volcano now active again. He also visited the macabre "grotto of mummies" at Guanajuato and filmed the first color movies ever made there. Tourist spots such as Taxco, Acapulco, Fortin, Oaxaca, Guadalajara and Mexico City also are shown. 1 Price Cancels Plan for British Picture Because of his heavy film schedule for the current year, Vincent Price has cancelled his plans to appear in the Lasky-McEwen Production of John Galsworthy's "The Apple Tree." Price was slated to assume one of the starring roles in the film when it goes before the cameras in England. In addition to his costarring portrayal in Universal-International's "Up in Central Park," he will appear in another film for that company in early summer.

David Selznick has a gold mine in her and another newcomer, French Louis Jourdan. Ann Blyth Makes Good Ann Blyth, whom I mentioned as a comer 'some time ago, has more than lived up to expectations. She got two good breaks and made the most of them. One was with Mickey Rooney in "Killer McCoy." The other was in "A Woman's Vengeance." Universal International is also touting its new Swedish import. Marta Toren, as a win-ner.

She attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in Stockholm, the same institution that produced Ingrid Bergman. She was signed by U.I. after testing for "Miracle of the Bells" and was given the lead in "Casbah," a musical remake of "Algiers," which brought Hedy Lamarr to fame. I have watched Marta work and she is definitely above average in talent. Child Actor Praised Hazel Brooks received lots of publicity for her part in "Body and Soul" but the role gave her little opportunity.

She mostly stood by and looked svelte. However, if brains and beauty mean anything in the acting profession Hazel should move up fast. She is a complete individual, often shocking people with her sage, witty conversation. As the best child actor of the year, I pick Dean Stock- LAD Pacifico Astrtologo is one of the youngsters spotlighted in "Shoe-Shine," running on Studio screen. well.

His performance in "Gentleman's Agreement" had great naturalness, rare in kids of his age. Dean, under contract to Metro, comes from an old theatrical family. This new crop of star prospects is encouraging. Most of the men are rugged and virile and the girls are chiefly not notable "lookers." The age of profiles and pretty faces, we hope, is rapidly passing in Hollywood. It is being supplanted by genuine ability in accordance with this realistic P.

It might not be a smash hit! "Lets apply the same situation to your own line. I give you this interview, you go back to your office, write it and turn It in. But suppose you were told that it would be eligible for the Nobel Prize for Literature! You would pore over it for hours, days, weeks, trying to make it the last word, the ultimate gem in journalism.

In the end it would probably never get printed at all. "Yet that is the equivalent of what our backers in the tjheater expect of us last word In 'sure-fire box Despite an occasional "Medea" or "Antony and Cleopatra," the classics are also doomed on Broadway, Adler believes. Most of those in public domain have already been done, and even if they haven't the "syndicates" remain cold to them because no possible 6ale of movie rights is involved. Pictures are in much the same boat and it, too, is shipping water. "There are audiences and audiences," Adler declared, "but there is no such thing as the aud'--nee unless it's for westerns! If the studios want to reach this audience only, they should make only westerns.

"But there are other, small- er audiences which would appreciate adult pictures: they have been lured away by the theaters and concerts; they have lost the movie habit. It would be good if they could be served too, wouldn't it?" Solution Suggested divorced husband of Sylvia Sidney, has been acting and directing for about as long as he can remember. When he was 17 he tried without success to raise S500 toward the staging of a play "by a oimg squirt of a newcomer Eugene O'Neill." The play was "The Hairy Ape." A veteran of the Provincetown Playhouse and the Group Theater, Adler suspects he ha3 appeared in works "by every important author in America except Robert Sherwood." He is here for his third film role, that of Dan-caire in Columbia's "The Loves of Carmen" with Rita Hay-worth, which he is playing, he says, with "a very detached air." Previously he was the Fascist mastermind in "Cornered" and "almost a hero" in "Saigon," still to be released. Deal in Making Adler has a production deal with Director Jules Dassin for the joint creation of a movie from a novel which Adler owns: "Prophet of Experience" by Jack lams. He would stick strictly to producing it, he adds; when a man doubles in two capacities he is bound to suffer.

Eventually he may go to England to act for the Old Vic. "Once we of the theater were endowed," he grins. "Now we have to endow ourselves. But it hasn't worked out badly in Laurence Oli-vier's case. Whenever he needs some money for Old Vic he slips over to Denham and makes a moving picture like Henry or 'La Boh em e' Ready Marta Eggerth and Jan Kie-pura cable they have finished their "La Boheme" film in Rome.
