Page 16 Freeport (III.) Journal-Standard, Tuesday. October 2, 1973 Former HCC Teacher To Be Church Guest The Rev. Bill Tomlin, pastor of the First Assembly for the Deaf in Rockford, will be a guest at the 7:30 p.m. concert of the "Signs For The Harvest" singers Thursday at the Bethel Tabernacle Assemblies of God Church. The Rev.

Mr. Tomlin was an instructor at Highland Community College and Rock Valley College, Rockford. The "Signs For The Harvest" singers make signs for deaf persons as they sing. Miss Karen Crews of Bowlegs, is director. Miss Crews has three deaf sisters and a deaf brother.

She has organized churches for the deaf and has trained persons in sign language. Combined Guild The Combined Guild of Bethany United Church of Christ will meet Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. for a share-a- dish dinner. Dessert and beverages will be furnished. Miss Marion Sikes will present a program on the history of Freeport churches.

Concordia Society The Concordia Society of knmanuel Lutheran Church will meet Wednesday REV. JOHN W. BRUCE Rev. John Bruce To Be Honored At Open House The Rev. John W.

Bruce of Freeport will be honored for his 50 years in the ministry at an open house Sunday at the Red Oak United Methodist Church from 2 to 5 p.m. His wife, Ethel, will also be a guest of honor. The Rev. Mr. Bruce has been pastor of the Red Oak church since 1962.

He also was pastor there from 1940 to 1951. He was granted a local preacher's license from the First Methodist Church in Freeport in 1923 and began serving as pastor of the Van Brocklin United Methodist Church that same year. Other area churches he has served are in Pearl City, Thomson, Richland, Freeport, Winslow-Basswood- McConnell and Riley (south of Marengo). Mr. Bruce organized an Epworth League Institute on the Lena Campgrounds in 1923.

He says he has particularly enjoyed working with youth. at 1 p.m. in the Martin Luther Room. Dessert will be served. Hostesses are Mrs.

Herbert Staben and Mrs. Clarence Popp. Roll call will be "My Favorite Song." Plan Work Session The Women's Fellowship of St. John United Church of Christ will meet Thursday at 10 a.m. at the church for.a work session.

Members will make favors for hospital trays and sew baby blanket kits for Church World Service. There will be a sack lunch at 12:30 p.m. All interested church women are invited. Persons needing transportation may call Mrs. Donald Jepsen at 232-6737.

Mrs. Fred Albrecht will lead devotions. Mrs. I. J.

Kubly, Mrs. Albrecht and Mrs. August Bach will be hostesses. New Mission The clothing depot for persons donating items for the Church World Service Clothing Drive is at the New Mission United Methodist Church, 530 W. Main St.

Donors are asked to use the Locust Street entrance at the west side of the church between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. during week days. The drive is being sponsored by the Church Women United. Lena UM Women Hold Fall Meeting More than 60 women and girls attended an organizational meeting and dessert luncheon of the United Methodist Women at the Lena United Methodist Church last week.

Mrs. H. A. Fenn was master of ceremonies and Mrs. W.

E. Tucker gave the invocation. Community singing was led by Mrs. A. M.

Kinsey of Addison. A program of organ-piano duets was given by Mrs. David Schulz and Miss Helene Dunn. Officers of the UM Women are Mrs. Fluegel, president; Mrs.

R. H. McNair, vice president; Mrs. Clair Karnatz, secretary; Mrs. Harold Kuhlemeyer, treasurer; Mrs.

Richard Spinhirne, Mrs. John Rampenthal, Mrs. Gary Hawkinson and Mrs. Maurice Howe, coordinators; and Mrs. Myron Seuring, chairman of nominations.

The officers are planning programs for 1974. The Women's Society of Christian Service and the Wesleyan Service Guild will be unified under the name of United Methodist Women at the beginning -of next year. The announcement was made public this week by Father Albert J. Nevins, editor-in-chief and director of publishing of Our Sunday Visitor. The imprimatur was given to Catholic edition by the Most Rev.

Leo A. Pursley, D.D., ordinary of the diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend. The Living Bible was proclaimed as America's No. 1 nonfiction best seller in 1972 and is selling substantially faster this year than last. Eight million copies are now in print after two years.

Willow UM The Youth Fellowship of the Willow United Methodist Church will meet with the youth of the Kent United Methodist Church Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Kent Church. The United Methodist Women of the Willow UM Church will meet Thursday at 8 p.m. at the home of Mrs.

Ore Heath. Kent Church Women Mrs. Orville Finkenbinder will be the hostess when the Lutheran Church Women of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Kent meet in her home Thursday at 8p.m. Mrs.

Dora Kempel will give the lesson. Officers Elected Officers were elected at the reunion meeting of the Dorcas Class of the Rock'Grove United Methodist Church. They are: Mrs. Albert Hemphill; president; Mrs. Claude Weidman, vice president; Miss Mildred Rockey, secretary; and Mrs.

Harold Bennehoff, treasurer. In charge of the program were Mrs. Ray Fehr, Mrs. Hennchoff and Miss Rockey. McConnell Women The McConnell United Methodist Women will meet Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.

in the Community Hall in Mrs. Ralph Kahly is in charge of the program. Dakota UM At 1:30 p.m. Thursday the United Methodist Women of the Dakota UM Church will meet at the home of Mrs. Loyal Andrews.

Mrs. Ivan Germain is in charge of the program. Oregon Circles Circles of the Oregon United Methodist Church will meet Thursday at the church. At 9 a.m.' the Martha Circle will meet, with the Rev. R.

James Reid giving the program. The Hannah Circle will meet at 9 a.m. and Mrs. Claire Allen will speak on "Legal Rights of Women." Also meeting at 9 a.m. will be the Anna Circle.

The Rev. R. James Reid will give the program when the Sarah Circle meets at 1 p.m. "Tomorrow's Art Today" will be the subject of program leader Mrs. Ina Cross when she speaks to the Rebekah Circle at 7:30 p.m.
