Section 3 CHICAGO TRIBUNE, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 1966 REYNAUD PREMIER FRANCE IN First Friend, Then of de Gaulle PARIS, Sept. 21 Reynaud, 87, who was Reynaud when a crushed France died early day at American pital after operation. Reyna political spanned most Reynaud century, most of the drama was into the three months he as premier from March to 1940. During that time his predictions of disaster true as French forces grated in the face of the man armored attack. Succeeded by Petain Reynaud wanted the government to move to North Africa to carry on the fight, but a majority of his ministers opposed the idea.

Reynaud resigned and Marshal Henri Philippe Petain was named premier to work out an armistice with Germany. Reynaud was rushed to the hospital last night for an immediate operation after what was believed to be an appendicitis attack. Two physicians issued a bulletin hours after his death, however, saying that he was suffering from a blockage of the small intestine. He died from respiratory complications and heart failure. A peppery man who stood 5 feet 2 inches, Reynaud kept in prime physical condition thruout his with calisthenics each morning and a close watch on his diet.

Marries Secretary He was divorced from his first wife in 1948, and married his long time secretary in 1949 at the age of 71. He was the father of a daughter by his first marriage, and two sons and a daughter by his second st marriage. In the days before World War II, when France was obsessed with a false sense of security from the Maginot line, Reynaud was pleading to no avail for adoption of the tank warfare ideas of Col. Charles de Gaulle. Reynaud promoted de Gaulle to brigadier general and made him an undersecretary of state for defense.

When Reynaud refused the call of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill to come to London as head of a government in exile, the way was opened for de Gaulle to accept the invitation. De Gaulle "Touched" Of Reynaud's death, de Gaulle told his cabinet: "Personally, I am deeply touched." After World War II, resumed his political life, but his name automatically called up bitter memories. He was popular, respected, and influential in parliament, but he knew and others knew that his days of greatest glory were past. Reynaud supported de Gaulle's presidency but broke with him in 1962. He charged that the president was usurping too much power for himself, was twisting the constitution, was blockading progress toward European unification, was upsetting France's traditional friendship with the United States Great Britain, and was wasting France's money on building an atomic bomb.
