Reynaud resigned and Marshal Henri Philippe Petain was named premier to work out an armistice with Germany. Reynaud was rushed to the hospital last night for an immediate operation after what was believed to be an appendicitis attack. Two physicians issued a bulletin hours after his death, however, saying that be was suffering from a blockage of the small intestine.

He died from respiratory complications and heart failure.
