LAKE AVIOATIOH We lenru from Capt. E. B. Ward, that the Champion, Capt. S.

Clement, will commence her regular trips between this port and St. Joseph as soon as the Lake is clear of ice. It is the intention of Capt. Ward to plnee his new bo.it, the Detroit, upon this lake, to run in connection with ths Champion early in September. The work of rebuilding the portion of her upper works recently destroyed by fire, is progressing rapidly, and it is expected she will be out by the of April.

The southern portion of Lake Huron, writes Capt. Ward on the 24th ult. from Bell River, is full of ice, and St. Clair Lake and River are also blocked up with ice, which is very heavy, The prrnpect therefore of the rnrly opening of navigation round the Lakes is not very flattering. DETROIT CHARTER ELECTION. --The election in Detroit resulted in the SUCCPSS of J. R. Williams (L. by five majority over David Smart (Whig.) Lnst year, the same cnndi- date running, Mr.

Louis, bringing dntrs from N. Orleans to the 17th ult. Mr. Gayare has been appointed Secretary of State by the Governor of Louisiana. The schooner Preston arrived at New-Orleans on the 14th from Matnmoras.

It was reported that Gen. Arista had been ded in his command of the army of the North. There was an outbreak of the negroes on the plantation ef Messrs. Hewitt, Heran Go's plantation, ten below city. -The revolt was quelled by shooting two oi the negroes dead on the spot.
