The old manual type mill has been largely supplanted by the continuous strip mill developed by the American Rolling Mill company about 1922. For generations, however, steel was made by the manual process, characterized by many hand operations now performed better and more cheaply by machinery. A number of mills in the United States still are of the manual type.

In both the manual and continuous sheet mill, the ingot is first taken to the blooming mill, the initial rolling operation. The blooming mill rolls the ingot down into a short, thick slab called a bloom by passing the piece of steel back and forth through a series of heavy rollers. After the bloom has been made the ends, which contain impurities, are cropped off and the bloom goes to tha bar mill where it is rolled into a Jong thin bar approximately one inch thick, eight inches wide and 30 feet long. The next step is known as "pickling," or soaking tho bars in a bath of diluted sulphuric acid to. remove dirt and adhering scale.

The bars are then reheated in a "pair" furnace and are ready for rolling in the sheet mill. In the manual type sheet mill there are two stands of two rolls each which often are classified as the "roughing" stand and tha "finishing" stand. The hot bars are dragged by men using heavy tongs from the heating furnace and placed in the roughing rollers where they pass back and forth, guided and turned over by hand, until they have become the right size. Now, instead of being bars, they are sheets, usually about 30 inches wide and 48 inches long and very thin. The next step is the "pack" process where the sheets are placed under steam hammers and doubled together into what is known as a "pack." The "packs" then go into the finishing rolls after being heated again.
