The IA'CROSSE TRIBUNE, la Crossev Wisconsin Sfflxfey, Ftbruaty 4, 1951 Put Ad In. Classifications. Propose $50 PayHfcefor UW Teachers MADISON, Im mediate $50 per month salary increases for full-tune Univer sity of Wisconsin faculty mem ben) was proposed by the uni union, local 233, AFL, Saturday. Proportionate increases for fiie part-time teaching staff also should be given, the union "While 1be per capita pur chasing power of the Wiscon sin residents has risen by more than 60 per cent since 1940 the union's report said, "average purchasing power of Vf. faculty member.

Jos dropped 10 per cent" The union's report offerw three proposals to relieve wha it called "economic losses suffered by the faculty through and to offer par tial protection from the anticipated further inflationary trend." The, first suggested a $50 boost and proportionate in creases. If that is not adopted, the report said, the five per cen salary budget increase requested by the regents for the coming fiscal year should be raised to 10 per cent, leavinj at five per cent the additiona fund for salary adjustments for the second year of the biennium. If the first plan is adopted, the report said, salaries should be raised five per cent each year. The third proposal called for immediate introduction of an emergency cost-of-living adjustment system to apply to all portions of salaries under $5,000. The report said that funds for the $50 per month increase proposed could be financed from a higher educational fund controlled by the state emergency board.

Gov. Rower's budget recommendation included five per cent merit increases for the next fiscal year and an -additional five per cent the following year, along with an added cost-of-living adjustment which would range up to $35 per month for faculty members. The union's study will be discussed at the next faculty meeting. CIO Labor News Schedule of meetings: Feb. 5, local 396, membership meeting, 7:30 p.

Now it comes to light, a campaign designed to bit the earner -where it will hurt him the pay check. Using patriotism as a disguise, these individuals are trying to do away with the 40-hour week.

Even when the country faces national crisis, some big businesses know no bounds. True, a person doesn't go into business just for fun. There must be a profit for the owners and the stockholders, "or an economy couldn't continue to exist But taking all this into consideration, doesn't the right to operate a business carry with it certain responsibilities, such as fair treatment to employes and customers as well? Should this responsibility fail, so the system of economy and way of living also will be destined to ruin. It seems funny that many business and industrial leaders don't realize this. Past actions of many such business leaders tend to indicate that if they do know this they don't seem to care.

With the start of the present conflict prices began to rise, although there was no particular shortage of such goods. In fact, some items at the present time are way out of reach. It became evident that congress had to do something or the country was serious inflation. What congress did hasn't really solved anything, at least not for the wage earner. This was due largely to the Influence of big that even though the wage earner helps produce materials, he isn't in the position to buy them or anything produced by other workers, which all leads to false economy.

On top of they now are trying to (institute a carqpaign against the 40-hour week. Past experience- of the last -war shows this is ridiculous, for almost all national leaders that time agreed it shouldn't be tampered with. It is entirely possible that at some future date such a campaign is entirely justified, but not until is ready to make some sacrifices.
