Page 10 Freeport (III.) Journal-Standard, Friday, October 6, 1972 USC, Stanford Meet Saturday By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Is this the week that the top-ranked Southern California Trojans are due for a fall in college football? The unbeaten, umtied Trojans take their No. 1 national ranking and Rose Bowl hopes on the road to battle Stanford, a team that has upset them two straight years. The Trojans are a big favorite to make it five in a row, but in the wake of last week's upsets of Colorado and Tennessee anything could happen in this game that headlines another hectic Saturday on college gridirons. One thing is sure. The Cardinals, as 15th-ranked Stanford now is known, are primed to make it three straight Brewers Replace Lane MILWAUKEE (AP) The Milwaukee Brewers have replaced controversial Frank Lane as director of baseball operations, while insisting he still figures prominently in their plans.

Jim Wilson, who pitched a no-hitter for the old Milwaukee in 1954, was promoted from head of scouting and player development to Lane's slot in effect the general manag- ership. Lane, 73, will stay on as a vice president and special assignment scout. They were the two major changes in a sweeping front office reorganization announced by president Allan H. "Bud" Selig at a news conference Thursday. The Brewers finished the season last in their division of the American League a second straight year as home attendance plunged 131,000 to just over 600,000.

However, Selig emphasized the shift "is in no way a criticism of Frank Lane or a minimizing of the outstanding work he has done." "The first thought on my mind is how do you go about trying to replace a legend?" Wilson said. "Certainly Caray To Broadcast White Sox Games On Television CHICAGO (AP) Veterar radio sportscaster Harry Caray is ling to be on television broadcasting the Chicago White Sox games next season. The baseball club announced Thursday that Caray, who handled the radio play-by-play for the White Sox during the 1972 baseball season, will handle 135 Sox games to be telecast by Chicago WSNS-TV, channel 44, and 162 games on WMAQ radio, a Chicago station. WMAQ signed a two-year agreement with the Sox Thursday, while WSNS recently signed a three-year pact. With the new radio outlet, the White Sox are bypassing the chain of smaller AM and FM stations which broadcast the games last year.

Under the agreement with WSNS- TV, the cameras' technicians and equipment of WGN-TV will be used for the video portion. WGN-TV now televises Chicago Cubs games. Caray, who formerly did radio-TV announcing for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Oakland A's, will work six innings on TV and three on the radio at games being aired by both sources. Frank Lane is a legend, and I don't think anyone around the game has the background he does." Lane staked much of his reputation as a master trader on last year's 10- player deal with Boston that many thought would accelerate the Brewers' progress.

It didn't turn out that way, but final statistics suggest the Brewers would have been even worse off had the deal not been made. Players Protest Action MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) Six black football players ousted fvom the Troy State University team took their protest to the steps of the state Capitol Wednesday and outlined their grievances with the school's sports program. Joined by other black athletes and students from Troy, a spokesman for the protesting gridders said their decision to walk out at halftime of last Saturday's game did not mean they were quitting the squad. Cliff Dunaham, speaking at a news conference arranged in front of the Capital, said the walkout was a symbolic protest and that the coaches "took it that they quit." Dunaham and the other five players lost their scholarships as a result of their action.

over the Trojans. "Our teams always seem to get up more for USC," commented Coach Jack Christiansen. Michigan State, routed 51-6 last week by USC, will try and rebound at home against seventh-ranked Notre Dame in the nationally televised game of the week. Colorado, which dropped from third to 12th in this week's Associated Press rankings after losing to Oklahoma State, goes against Kansas State while lOth-ranked Tennessee, beaten last week by Auburn, takes on Memphis State. Third-ranked Ohio State plays at California, No.

4 Alabama is at Georgia, No. 5 Michigan, entertains Navy, No. 8 Louisiana State is at Rice and No. 9 Texas hosts Utah State. In games involving the AP Second Ten, Oregon is at No.

11 Washington, Florida is at No. 13 Florida State, Arizona is at No. 14 UCLA, No. 16 Penn State is at Illinois, No. 18 Mississippi meets No.

17 Auburn at Jackson, Miss, and the Air Force, No. 19 is at Colorado State. Second-ranked Oklahoma, No. 6 Nebraska and No. 20 Iowa State have an open date.

Missouri is at Oklahoma State, Northwestern at Wisconsin, New Mexico at Wyoming, Columbia at Princeton, Pitt at Tulane, Arkansas at Texas Christian and Oregon State at Arizona State in other games. Sinden Returns To NHL As Managing Director Of Bruins THE BOSTON BRUINS of the National Hockey League Thursday signed their former coach Harry Sinden to the newly created position of managing director of the organization. BOSTON (AP) Harry Sinden, who shocked the sports world by quitting the Boston Bruins after coaching the team to the Stanley Cup championship in 1970, is returning to the National Hockey League club as an executive. Sinden, 40, was named Thursday to the newly created position of managing director of the Bruins, who made a major front office change by moving Milt Schmidt from general manager to executive director. Sinden left the Bruins in a salary dispute after the Bruins won the Stanley Cup two years ago, taking a position in private business.

He returned to hockey this year, coaching Team Canada in its successful series with Russia. Signed to a five-year contract by the Bruins, who regained the Stanley Cup championship last spring, Sinden said his new job will be to "keep the Bruins the No. 1 attraction in the game." Schmidt, a player, coach and front office executive with the Bruins since 193.6, is a member of Hockey Hall of Fame. Oilers Sign QB HOUSTON (AP) The Houston Oil- ers of the National Football League have picked up one quarterback and dropped another from their taxi squad. The Oilers Tuesday signed Ed Baker, a former quarterback with the New York Giants for their taxi squad.
