pack-5 cents. DItAGS II0F.X3. The War the Tliln, Srnmlcsa Tabes Are llenl Without Injury. Saxhorns, so called after a famous family named Sax, who invented nnd introduced these Inslrii-incuts about the middle of the last century, nre tho mainstay of all modern brass bands. They nre manufactured In many different, sizes, from high soprano to the huge conlrnbass or bombardon, nnd the most important of the lot Is the euphonium, which supplanted the now obsolete 'serpents'' and ophi-i lehles.

The tallest saxhorn ever made stnmls eight, feet high and contains more than forty feet of tubing. The advantage of seamless or "solid drawn" tulies tor such instruments us trombones and horns is considerable, since, no mutter how good the joint inajr be, sooner or later the action of tho breath will wear away the solder. 'Jo bend these thin brass tubes without splitting or denting tho metal was at one time very tlllllcult, but, thank!) to a most Ingenious artiliee, the operation Is now both safe and simple. The, tube Is first washed out with a chemical substance, such as Is used by plumbers to prevent solder from adhering where It Is not wanted, and it is then completely filled with molten lead poured in from a ladle. Thus supported, from within, the brass Is easily urd safety ent to the required shape, the lead being afterward removed by heat.

Pearson's. DIDN'T" KNOW- Coffee Whs llie Ciin.se. Many daily habits, particularly of pnllng and drinking, are formed by following our elders. In this way 111 health Is often fastened upon children. A fin.

"The taste of coffee was In my mouth all the time and was, as I found out Inter, the cause of the stomach rebelling ngainst food. "I now see that it was only from following the example of my elders that I formed and continued the miserable habit of drinking coffee. My digestion remained poor, nerves unstrung, frequent headache, and yet I did not suspect the true cause. "Another trouble was a bnd, muddy complexion, for which I spent time nnd money for creams, massaging, without nny results.

"After I wns ninrrled I was asked to try Postutn, and would you believe It, an old coffee toper, took to Tostum from the very first? CTJHE FOR TROUBLES. By Rev. Junius B. Remensnyder. Heboid tho fowls of the nlr; for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gnther Into bnrns, yet your Heavenly Father feedetb Aro ye not much better thnu they? Matthew 20.

That the great teacher know men well, their weaknesses nnd their needs, Is remarkably shown by this counsel. He had noted tho anxiety written In their faces. Their duties, their business, tho responsibilities weighed dov. the uplift of their hearts. And ho much more Ho would have observi the same nspc to-day.

Life then was simple nnd free compared with the present. Social conditions have grown so complex that It Is hard to keep from being under stress. If one looks nt the multitudes of persons he meets on our streets, every one seeing In a lurry, as If bearing strain. Life Is not being lived easily and naturally, but under pressure almost painfully. Kven the faces of the young reveal this severe conception of life.

Now, Christ considered tills a distorted, needless nnd unhappy thing. And fo lie calls men to look nt the fnedom nnd blithesome Joy of the enroling birds so much wiser In their simplicity than they lu nil their mix-Inns forethought nnd strain How, then, can we avoid this error nnd take life easily and naturally? I.ovo your work. Ho not think that every one else has an easier calling than you have. Most of us have found the labor filled to our hand, nnd, remembering that work is life's chief business, we should take delight in It. Throw nway nil ambition beyond that of doing your day's work well.

Exercise, neighborlluess, find kindly to your brother man, show tin Interest In his success, live and let live. Find pleasure in life ami Interest in others. It Is our seUlshness that accounts fur much of our stress. Were we satisfied with our portion Instend of cherishing grasping slrlt we would find life a far 1cm thorny road, lie who takes time to tlo kindly notion lightens his own task and Illumes his), own. Again, have some innocent recreation.

It Is the greatest error to confound religion nnd abstinence nnd austerity. 'The church has never made the mistake of opposing harmless pleasures. Those Christina people who linva done so have sadly misrepresented It. Never worry over evils to come. "Suilielcnt unto the day Is the evil thereof." Far more troubles nre suffered In Imaginations than In reality.

Let us hope- for the best Instead of dreading the worst. Never more than one trouble at a time. Some peo-plo bear three kinds all they Inve had, all they have now, and all they expect to have. I-t us not, then, suffer from imaginary sorrows And when troubles do come them patiently. Patience Is ns a case of armor around the heart which deadens the blows Intlleted on II.

Impatience not only strips off the covering, but lays bare the very quick in all Its sensitiveness of nerve. To bear evils with patience, extracts from them their thorns and gathers from them the sweetest graces of temper. P.ut the chief means of taking life easily is that to which the Master here points us. it Is the lesson taught by the birds. They nre by no moans Idle.

They work from morning until night. P.ut their activity is without care. Their life is free, joyous, unburdened by anxiety a gladsome flight, cease- less song, and yet your Heavenly Fath er l'sdoth them. Are ye not much belter than they? Let us then have faith In (iod. Let us do our work and trust the rest to 1 Int.

THE RELIGIOUS MOTIVE. By Henry F. Cope. "Holding forth the word of life." Phil. Why should a man bother himself about religion at all? Is it in ordr to avert the wrath of the Almighty or Mo make certain of felicity in the fu-ture? Once superstition so bold sway that, fear was a siillicient motive to make all men at least formally If not vitally religious.

To-day we feel that 1 Is a damaging fallli that turns any man Into trembling, terror stricken slave. Once men laid their possessions on the altars of religion In order to the deities; In later times they 'are told to lay their minds there. Intellectual stultification Is the price that many are willing to pay to secure nn Imagined peace of mind or future felicity. Willi ninny lellidon is a scheme of getting all to think alike by not allowing any to think nt all. So long as religion means (he hold-' lag or ib-fending of certain opinions.

the belief in cerlaln views, especially regarding the dead past, the unknow future, or the mysterious other world, it will he bard for the practical mind to see what value such views might, have or what necessity, personal or social, Is upon us lo aid In nlilng them. Even where the teachings of religion have taken a more practical liearing. where the emphasis lias liecn upon duties, upon social relations or personal Tightness, hile one may see the importance of right moral and ethical standards. It Is bard to persuade folks that there Is any large value in getting the whole world to chant the formula that says "Thou shnlt not steal." ltellgion must strike deeper than this or have no power over us. In a world where men aro wishing that the days were twice as long they still find time for things that are really worth while, they are quick to recognize tho value of things spiritual, hut It is not hard to understand their Impatience with nny church or system that spends time lighting over opinions when the poor, the oppressed, the Impotent stnnd helpless nnd neglected nt our doors.

Not so did the great Teacher when ho wns with men. flrent smiled being thnt Ho was, with clear vision of truth. He had no time to quibble over the riddles of childish minds be must be nbout Ills Father's business; be came to remind men thnt ho Infinite one was in this world to do good, to servo mankind, that men might all linve life and each his own life in Jts fullness. One hunger, ono passion Is In nil normal lives, the unchanging desire for the larger, more complete life. All our getting of things Is but our ntteuipt to fill i-s our lives to the fullness of I 1 their measure; n'-S our our tolls, our endeavd are but the spirit of mnn seeking more life.

This wo desire for ourselves; this, as we And life, wo deslro for all. Religion meets mnn at this point; It shows him tho way of tho larger life. It bids him reeognlzo himself as moro lmn dust; It awnkens In him the sense of tho divine. At Its best It bids him call himself the child of the highest and urges him to go forward Into tho fullness of tbe best the world has ever dreamed of or longed for. The test of any religion Is this: Does It stir mo to discontent with the life I have, with my attainments, with the whole order of life nbout me? Does It awaken In me augmenting longings for fnlrer, sweeler, fuller llfo for nil men? Does It give mo glimpses of a lifo to which this one seems to be hut tho vestibule? Churches nnd creeds are but the tools nnd milestones nlong the way where life goes from more to more.

Men will be religious not to escnpe some painted bell, but to find the way Into Hint heaven nlrendy pictured In their passions, their dreams, and longing, to walk In this way and to nwnken nil men to know nml follow the path that leads Into the life enlarging and lord of all lesser things. Whoever leads here will be followed. SERM0NETTES. Faith makes a fold; bigotry fence. The double-minded arc but half-wit-ted.

Pence Is the power gained through pnln. No pleasure comes from playing with life. No good Is any good unless It is soon outgrown. You can usually tell a man's size by what be sees. Your Imaginary wrongs cannot cover your real wrongdoing.

An Idenl too heavy becomes a drag Instead of nn Inspiration. The man who does not have nn uphill fight Is going down hill. The surest, swiftest wny of being damned Is to do nothing. It's no use wasting blows on the man who Is nfrald of being hurt. You get mush Instend of men when you offer them only soft places.

It's no. use sighing for elinnce to lead If you dare not go alone. Out of deep sorrows come high powers to comfort and strengthen. Idleness makes the hours wearily long nnd tho days woefully short. The mark of heavenly blessing Is Hint It Ignores our earthly boundaries.

He can never know any deep Joy who can lnugh nt the sorrows of another. The mnn who Is liberal in his faith Is not always the same In his finances. Sometimes we need tides of grief to carry us over the bars of our dull content. The only wny to get nil the happiness In lifo Is to give for the happiness of nil. The man who bnngs his head ngainst hard facts feels his bumps and cnlls them faith.

If you would make sure of your sins being fruitful bury them tinder pretense of piety. There is always greater benefit' In enduring my own pain than lu envying another's pleasure. The devil is worried by the people who work for the good, not by those who worry over blm. DON'TS FOR CHURCHMEN. Don't let your heart dry up lest religion leak out.

Don't try to carry man when It tuny lie better to lend hint. Don't shrink from pnln if you would pay the price of nil deep pleasure. Don't fall to note thnt where might seems to make right It Is but making ruin. Don't make the mistake of thinking of religion as the reaping of wings where wind w-as sowed. Don't talk overmuch about your difficulties lest yon be classed with people of many deficiencies.

Do you know of any woman who ever received any benefit from talcing Lydia H. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound?" If any woman who is suffering with any ailment peculiar to her sex will ask her neighbors this question, she will be surprised at the result. There is hardly a community in this country where women cannot be found who have been restored to health by this famous old remedy, made exclusively from a simple formula of roots and herbs. During the past 30 years we have published thousands of letters from these grateful women who have been cured by Lydia E.

Never have we knowingly published a testimonial that was not truthful and genuine. 1 Icrc is one just received a few days ago. These iieiiplo were Induced to go to Wtstern Canada through the solicitation of a Canadian Government agent, who secured for them low railway rates. Cnrninngny, Canada, Dee. 15, 'OS. Mr. O.

J. P.rougbton, Canadian Government Agency, 135 Adams street, Chicago We had nudaclty enough to tackle the proposition of buying four sections of land in Southern Alberta, thirty miles east of CTulrsholin, nnd heading up on the Little Bow, and our two beys each got homestead adjoining. We fenced three sections and the two homesteads and built a house, barn, corrals and granary and have since enlarged some of these buildings. We have broken 200 acres of land, which has been sowed to oats nnd wheat. During tiie severe winter of two years ago the wheat killed out sonic what and our crop yielded only ten bushels to the acre, but the spring wheat went 21 bushels to the acre.

In this country we must be prepared for storms nnd cold, nt times, 20 to below zero, yet ou tho whole the inters nre mild nnd while there nre exceptional crops, It Is fair to say thnt the average farmer can depend on having a yield in average years of from 20 to 23 bushels to the acre for spring wheat and winter whent in our immedlnte neighborhood yields from 25 to bushels to the nere on the average. We have now quite a bunch of horses, over 50 In nil, nbout sheep, after having sold HO for mutton this fall. We have 20 bead of pure bred registered Shropshire, which are worth each. The average price received for mutton sheep was $5.00 and a little over. Pork brings 5 and 0 cents a pound.

We have about 30 head of cattle on our ranch now, nnd last winter they picked their entire living from our pasture, running to the straw stacks for shelter at night. The increase of land vain? has been extraordinary. Our land four years ngo cost us a little less than nn nere. Wo have sold one section for $15.00, but we would not sell any more for less than $25.00 per acre, as we expect the railroad within four miles of our ranch within the next IS months. Southern Alberta of Western Canada Is a mighty good country for any man or woman who loves outdoor life and who wants to get good returns for their labor and Investment.

We have been pleased with cur treatment from the Canadian government and can heartily commend Southern Alberta ns splendid country In which to loente. Yours very truly, (Signed) JAMFS S.
