But Success Not Good Pressure Old Hat For Dallas i MIDI I It 1 Sunday, January 2, Crucei Sun-Ntws-Page 17 IRVING, Tex. (UPI)-It will be the Dallas Cowboys' maturity vs. the San Francisco Forty Minors' youthful vigor Sunday when those two clubs clash for Ihe second year in a row for the National Football Conference championship and a ticket to Super Bowl VI. The Cowboys, currently riding the crest of an eight-game win slrtak--the longest in club hislory, won Ihe 1970 showdown 17-10 in San Francisco and are five-point favorites to do so again when they lineup at 12:30 p.m. CST in Texas Stadium.

Playoff pressure is old-hat to the Cowboys, who are in the post-season grind for the sixth straight year, bul it wasn't until Ihey beal Ihe Forty Niners a year ago lhat Ihey were able to minimize Ihe ofl-hcard charges lhat "Ihey always blow the big one." The Forty Niners, on Ihe other hand, until getting to the NFC finals last season hadn't been inany kind of playoff since Portland's Petrie Says Coach Lax CHARLIE BRAKES, U.T. He'll be in the Pan American Center Monday when New Mexico State Rosls-thc Miners PORTLAND, Ore. (UPI) Star guard Geoff Petrie said Saturday Portland Trail Blazer basketball coach Holland Todd was lax on team discipline, and a winning record can'l be built on such a basis. In the gloom of the Longhorn dressing room after Penn State's 30-6 victory in the 36th Cotton Bowl, Royal quickly pointed out the thing that cost his team dearly. "Mike Bayer was out of his head, out on his feet on the two passes lhat were completed over him in the third quarter," said Royal. "One went to Ihe one yard line and the other for a touchdown. He didn't know who he was." The nationally lelevised sellout game in the Orange Bowl, starting at 4:30 p.m.

EST, promises lo be a "ball control" 'contest between Iwo of the most equally matched teams in pro football. Oddsmakers rate the game a toss-up. The world champion Colts, wno had the AFC's second-best rushing game, may be forced to tangle with the Dolphins' second-rated'defense withpul the powerhouse running Of Norm Bulaich and Tom Matte, who together scored 16 touchdowns during the regular season. Bulaich is listed as a doubtful starter, although he claims the hamstring pull he suffered against the Dolphins three weeks ago "is better." Matle, whose knee swelled to double its normal site after last week's win over Cleveland, is expected to start. "We hope they'll both be ready," Baltimore coach Don McCafferty said, "but if they aren't, we'll go with rookies Don Nottingham and Don McCauley, and thai would be pretty tough in a big game like Ihis." McCafferty indicated he planned to slart Nottingham, even if Matte and Bulaich are ready.

This will be Miami's first championship game. The Colts are old hands at it and according to McCafferty, "if they're not up for Ihis game, Ihey don't belong in the business." In that longest of all pro foolball games, the Dolphins came from behind three limes lo tie the score, and went on lo win in the second sudden-death overtime period on Garo Yepremipn's field goal. Dallas coach Tom Landry says it is "a very mature team we have has taken years lo build up Ihe playoff experience we really need." Dick Nolan, Landry's one- i playing parlner and coaching aide, says his Forty Niners "were a little loo young and inexperienced a year ago although we gave Ihem a run for it's going to be different. We've got that first-year jitlers out of our system." Worth A Muench-ion By JOE MUENCH Ten New Marks Set In 'Sugar' NEW ORLEANS (UPD-Ten Sugar Bowl records were set or tied in Oklahoma's 40-22 conquest of Auburn Saturday, including new marks for rushing, field goal yardage and attendance. Oklahoma's Wishbone offense ground out 439 yards on the turf to break a Sugar Bowl mark of 373 set in 1944 by Georgia Tech.

The Sooner attack was led by quarterback Jack Mildren, who accounted for 149 yards and three touchdowns. Mildren's 18 points, all scored in Ihe first half, also broke the record for 12 points in a single scoring half by an individual, a mark held by 17 players. The Sooners' Jon Carroll set a Sugar record by booting a 53- yard field goal in Ihe third quarter. The kick broke a record of 52 yards set last year by Fred Hinton of Ole Miss. Oklahoma piled up 28 firsl downs, three more lhan the old mark Georgia Tech set up in 19-14.

Other records set were: --An attendance of 84,031, breaking Ihe old mark of 82,910 set in 19G2 when Alabama defeated Arkansas 10-3. --The most points scored in a -Sugar Howl game-62--one point more than Georgia Tech and West Virginia scored in 1PM, --The least yardage penalized --Auburn with 0, tying old records held by Louisiana Stfte in 1937 and Air Force in 1971. Olher records were Oklahoma's 31 points in the first half, Auburn's 22 points in the second half and Oklahoma's one pass completion in four attempts. If there's one person in the world U.T. El Paso Head Coach Don Ilaskins does not like, it's Aggie Coach Lou Henson.

The reason is one of two: jealousy or frustration. Haskins. the "hurley bear," got a taste of Henson as a coaching opponent in Ihe 1966-67 season when his defending national championship team lost twice to the famed "Miracle Midgets." And. in Ihe four years following, he won only one game, lhat coming last year in El Paso. Poor Don, what makes him this way? Vhat causes dis? Even off the court, Haskins is plagued by Ihe presence of Hcn- snn.

year, Haskins had his own weekly television show on KROD. Then. Henson got his show on the same channel. This year, Haskins moved to KELP. So did Henson.

And Haskins doesn't like it one bit. In fad, Ilaskins claims Lou gets the better camera crew for his 30 minute show. Haskins has only a 15 minute show in what is supposed to be hie hometown and Hen- fon's neighboring city. Whal makes "the Bear" even more hostile and enraged about Henson is the (act lhat his Miners always come close to the Ag- gies. When Ihe two learns meet, everyone knows there'll be a lit- lle blood, two or three technical fouls and only a few points separating Ihe winner and loser.

last year. Haskins got his first tasteof victory over Ihe Aggies when his learn took a G6-52 win in El Paso Coliseum. Earlier in the season, the Aggies won in the Pan American Center. 03-61. Don had come close again, but then so does Wiley Coyote.

Haskins. rated by Henson as one of the finest coaches around, likes great defensive teams. So he recruits them. This year his defense is fifth best in the country, allowing other teams only poinls a game. And he takes pride in developing it.

One New Mexico sportswriter was watching a Miner practice prior to the start of Ihe season and reported Haskins was yelling so hard the ball was taking funny bounces on the vibrating floor. He was screaming at his defense that looked fine to the sports- wriler. After practice, the writer edged up to Haskins and, trying to get on the burley coach's good side, said "didn't look to good today, eh coach?" Haskins answered: "We played great--had a real fine practice." Monday, when the two teams meet at 7:30 p.m. in Ihe Pan American Center, Haskins will be howling, growling and in a very bad mood no matter how well his team is playing. He might smile if he wins, though.

He's been waiting a long time for a win on the Aggie home floor and he's got a lot of catching up to do. People behind the Miner bench may have lo stuff cotton or maybe popcorn in their ears because there definitely will be a OPEN EVERY NIGHT 'TIL 9 SUNDAYS 12 TO 6 Specials Good Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The little BOY'S STRIPED DRESS SHIRTS IN FASHION RIGHT COLORS No Iron, Sizes 8-18.
