WEDNESDAY, MAY 26. 1937 THE EVENING INDEPENDENT. MASSILLON. OHIO THIRTEEN IN TIDBITS "Grease-Balls" Are Important People, Too Story of Johnny Pawl's Sportsmanship ifrankie Delroy Will Hold Cummings Hands By BILL BRAUCHER Central Press Sports Editor NEW YORK, May at Indianapolis are an unhonored legion they're just the guys who go along for the ride 500 miles around the red hot speedway at an average- at better than 100 miles an- hour How would you like to sit there beside a fellow hitting that kind of with cars whizzing along on both sides of you? the gent who has. the wheel, of course, knows where he is going, and what he is doing or trying to do but the grease-ball beside him just sits tight, wondering, hoping it's all going to be all right, holding his breath perhaps at times, squeezing his shoulders together when the racing room narrows'down to a tight squeak.

It isn't all just sitting, to be sure if it were, mechanics would be goofier than they are, I guess but there are a lot of things to do some of them impossible things and the tasks sometimes pile -up all at once, and a guy has to get going in a nervous sweat. Last year hiked from Crashed into the race as mechanic Johnny Pawl hitch- Morrisville, and Fred Frame. Frame lasted three laps when his crankshaft broke Johnny stayed around the pits, hoping some other driver "would come along and call for a mechanic' finally he got back in the seat with Cliff Bergere and they tore around the oval for 106 miles than the gas ran out, while Bergere tinkered with the engine, Johnny dashed to the pits for a can of gas with the precious fuel, he was on his way back to the stranded car when he saw Al Miller's car spin on the bricks, throwing the driver out onto the track. Some lads might not have known what' to but Johnny did Instinctively he rushed over to the driver, picked him up and dragged him out of the pathway of following machines then he dashed back to his gas can and sprinted to Bergere's car late, but a hero Johnny received the 1936 award for sportsmanship. Then there's Frankie Delroy mechanic for Wild Bill Cummings.

Frankie comes up to the races this -year with. a brand new Idea it's hands" a driver's hands get very tired after a couple of hundred. miles of that grind so Frankie takes Bill's hands (one at a time!) and rubs the circulation back' he figures it's not too TODAY Robert Taylor in "Personal Property" Thurs. Frankie who weighs ho-more than a jockey (112 pounds) said he conceived the idea while Cummings was setting that record in the recent qualifying trials he noticed Bill holding up a hand in the stretch in an effort to relieve a cramped muscle. Prankie had some other things to think about, too, while was setting that record on the third lap, going through a turn, the gear shift of Wild Bill's mount jumped out for a minute and he slid down near the safety apron Frankie slid doyn into the "cellar" and held the gear shift in place while Bill hit the last lap for 125.129 miles ah hour for a world record a bit of vibration? yeah, but these Indianapolis grease-balls do not mind that.

1937. KING FEATURE SYNDICATE, die. PERRV srgppeo oor 4TH STRAIGHT REVERSE FOR A. A. LEADERS Slump of Milwaukee Brewers Assuming Serious Proportions.

CHICAGO, May 26, vere no signs of panic yet, but ililwaukee's American association eading Brewers had the makings of real slump today. The 1936 dropped a 7 6 decision to Toledo last night or their fourth straight defeat. The Brewers did plenty of hitting, ont- 1'ugging the Mud Hens, 12 to 7, but light walks and a hit batsman by Bill Zuber and three more passes py Ralph Winegamer, gave Toledo I the ammunition necessary. Winegarner, who worked less than innings, was charged with the as he was on the scene when Manager Fred Haney serving as pinch-runner for Ed Coleman, scored he winning run before a man was nit in the ninth. John Rizzo, Columbus' sensational young- slugger, collected only one hit against Kansas City in another of the full program of night games, but it was enough to win the ball game, 6 to 5, and run his consecutive-game hitting streak to 35.

With two out in the last of the ninth, Rizzo slammed one of Wiley Moore's pitches over the right field fence for a homer. The victory was credited to Morton Cooper who relieved Ed Heusser in the seventh, while Moore, third Kansas City hurler, was stuck with the defeat. Minneapolis retained its slender dge over Toledo in the battle for econd place by out-slugging lu- ianapolis for a 12 to 10 victory. Z5 VLAV ABOUND INSTE4P OF TGiyiMG TO SHOOT OVER W6H BANKS! Alex Morrison says: Much of the game's wide appeal is due to the fact that you can send the ball in any kind of flight as long as it reaches it goal. Many players get into trouble abusing this privilege. Others give themselves the worst of It by figuring that all shots must be played directly toward the hole. Very often it is to your advantage to do otherwise.

When your ball comes to rest under a high bank and there is -considerable danger of hitting the bank when you try to play out, the best thing to is choose a line that will permit you to play over the obstruction at an angle. This greatly cuts down your chances of striking the bank, makes it easier to raise the ball and gives you confidence for following shots. In playing such shots you will find that it also helps to open and lay back the clubface. This position of the clubface gets the ball up quicker. If you will follow this simple procedure I'm sure that such lines will not seem unplayable By overcoming this type of hazard, you will worry less about getting into other hazards on the course.
