Last year the 28th ATS airlifted 4.8 million tons of cargo, ranging from nuts and bolts in the Air Force. Mere than (JCoo hours of this or about eight months has boon spent in the cockpit of the C-124 since Major Mey joined the 2Sth seven years ago. This is an average of 76 hours a month for 84 consecutive mouths. "Quite a bit of flying," said Major Mey. The reliable C-124 flown by the 28th has a non-stop range fully loaded of 5500 miles at speeds of 200 miles an hour.

A normal crew of nine is necessary to i'ly the bird which can carry 200 fully equipped troops if necessary or 25 tons of cargo. MANY NICKNAMES have been placed on the C-124 like "The Alcoa Overcast" or "The Aluminum Cloud," "Old Shaky," "The Flying Gymnasium," or as one pilot put it, "Several million rivets flying in loose formation." Many of these names come from the immense size of the C-124. With its 174 foot wingspan, 130 foot length, and a tail that stands 43 feet or about the height of a three-story building, it is classed as the world's largest operational piston-driven transport aircraft. The C-124 and the 28th crews have maintained a good flying record. During the past 12 months, the C-124s were flown 16,000 accident free hours over 3.9 million air miles by crews from the 28th.

This is impressive as much of the flying was done in unfamiliar countries and on unfamiliar airfields. Complicate this with different languages, varying air traffic procedures and these 10)00 accident free hours form a nice record. At the present time the 28th ATS is undergoing a buildup due to the recent reassignment of the squadron from the Air Force Logistics Command over to heavy construction equipment. It ''can never be said that aircrews lack for flying time if assigned to the 28th ATS. Just recently for example. Major William J. Mey, an aircraft commander, reached the 10,000 hour mark for total hours flown. This is ing bee will also be retained as a result of CoL Styron's efforts.

The first new personnel are due to arrive around July 1st of this year. CoL Styron stated that this Sunset ft buildup is necessary to meet the increased flying requirements of MATS.
