The Laffey, a 2200 ton destroyer of the Sumner Class, is 376 feci inches long, or less than half the length of the Yorktown next to which she will be berthed at Patriots Point. The newest addition to the Naval and Maritime Museum at Patriots Point is scheduled to arrive in Charleston Sunday, Dec. 3. The destroyer Laffey (DD-724), survivor of one of the most severe kamikaze attacks of World War II, is scheduled to arrive in Charleston Harbor around midday Sunday. Her arrival will depend upon weather conditions during her tow from Solomons, Md. to Charleston.

Upon arrival, the Laffey will be berthed 'at Pier Tango at the Naval Station until pier facilities have been constructed at Patriots Point. The Laffey, commissioned -Feb. 8, 1944, has a distinguished record of service extending from participation in the shore bombardment of "Utah" beach in France on D-Day to her survival of a fearsome attack at Okinawa during her Pacific duties and on through service in Korea. The Laffey was decommissioned March 29, .1975 in Alexandria, Va. Her usefulness did not end there, however, as the ship has continued to serve the Navy as an electronics test vehicle at the Naval Surface Weapons Center facility at Solomons, a role she carried until her transfer to Patriots Point by the Navy.

The tale of the Laffey's survival of an intense Japanese attack is legend. On April 15, 1945, the Laffey was on station 30 miles north of Okinawa when the enemy launched a ife air attack with some 50 planes at the Laffey.
