Two new mid-range models, plus a number of functional safety improvements, are the principal news in the Mercedes-Benz North American product line for 1974. New are the 240 Diesel and the gasoline-engined 230, two sedans built with fuel economy and safety among the prime design objectives. The 240D replaces the 220D, while the 230 is the successor to the 220. Both new models have four-cylinder power plants. Mercedes-Benz will be offering a total of eight models for 1974 the 230 and 240D, plus the six-cylinder 280 sedan and coupe in the mid-range class, and the 450SL, 450LC, 450SE and 450SEL in the luxury category.

The 450 series, which is composed of V8-powered cars, was introduced to the U. S. last year. It continues basically unchanged with the exception of detail refinements, following Mercedes-Benz policy of making changes only when considered necessary to improve function. The 450SE has been termed best by Road and Track Magazine.

The 450SEL is the long-wheelbase version of the same model. The 450SL is a two-seat sports car with both hard and soft tops as standard equipment, while the 450SLC is a limited edition four-seat coupe that is the flagship of the line. Only 150 per month will be available for the entire country. Principal changes on the 450 series are the incorporation of new, stronger bumpers to meet the 1974 standards, and the addition of a sequential seat belt- ignition interlock system, also to conform to government standards. The share of changes are in the mid-range cars, which along with the mandated equipment have gained a new four-speed automatic transmission with torque converter and numerous external safety features pioneered on the 450 series.

Included here are: deeply ridged taillights which tend to remain visible longer in road- splash driving conditions, special moldings on the windshield pillars to keep the side windows clear of rain water, an inside-adjustable side mirror designed to stay cleaner, and a curved molding over the rear window to keep it clear of rain water. Mercedes-Benz of North America President Karlfried Nordmann reports that the new cars, which will be introduced in all parts of the country ex- cept the West Coast on November 1, are arriving just in time.
