EVERYDAY CHEAPSKATE DEAR MARY: I recently renewed my auto insurance in New Jersey and shocked to out that my rates increased by $200 due to my credit rating. Have 1 missed something? What does my credit rating have to do with auto insurance? I've never missed a premium payment, nor have I ever been late with my payments.

I am truly befuddled. Doesn't. past payment history with my insurance carrier count for anything? Amosandra New Jersey DEAR AMOSANDRA: Insurers have been using credit information since at least 1970 to price insurance premiums with the theory that poor credit indicates a person is at increased risk for accidents. Using credit for insurance decisions is not only legal in most states, in recent years it has become the norm. Curiously, the way insurers use credit information can differ from the way lenders use the same data.

You could have a good credit score and quality for the best interest rates but get slapped with higher premiums. The way to reduce your insurance premiums is to understand that it is meant to protect you against the kind of disasters that could wipe you out financially not to pay for the little stuff you could easily cover out of your own pocket. Raise your deductibles and you'll lower j-our premiums. Then get diligent about improving your credit score by 'paying your bills on time, keeping your balances low on credit cards and lines of credit, not-applying for credit you dqn't need. feu can e-mail questions or tins at or Everyday Cheap- store, P.O.

Some songs are joyful and some are not, but all are unique and give the listener a glimpse of Shakira herself. The album combines rock, reggae, salsa and styles that reflect the last four decades of music.
