TAGE NEWS MONDAY, SEPT. 25. 1961 NHS Ground Out 24-16 Win Over Torrington In Opener Minkucci, Foley LeDuc TD Makers; Andrighetti Goes 76 With Kickoff By TONV riSCITELU Sports Editor A crowd of about 2,000 attended the dedication of Ihc new Nauga- luck High School Field afternoon and what better way to climax the day than have the home prides come out victors in the first game played on the field. Coach Ray Legenza's Naugatuck Greyhounds did just that downing Torrington 24-16. A third period touchdown scored by Oliver LeDuc with 3:36 left was the difference.

233 GrounB Yards Naugamck with Tri-Captain Ray Foley at the helm "stayed on the ground most of the afternoon and rolled up 233 yards, Garnet tried the airways six times, completed three but had two intercepted. In contrast, the Red Raiders unable to penetrate the Naugy defensive unit overland had Quarterback Bob Peters, throw 22 passes with five making connections. Tom Andrighetti had one attempt which missed. Nuugy TD Milkers Foley, John Minnicucci and LeDuc were tlie touchdown makers fo'r the Greyhounds. Minicucci tallied in the lirsi period from a vard out to finish a 60-yard inarch.

Foley hit paydiit from the four in the second period after moving his team 49 yards. LeDuc got the "big one" in third, smashing over from a half yard out. Foley accounted for two of the PAT with rushes, good for four more points and Sophomore Jack Fruin registered the other two pointers also via a rush. Andrighetti Goes 76 Andrighetti supplied the long distance gallop for, the. day when he took the kickoff 'following the NHS TD in the first period on his own 24 and scampered 76 yards past the Garnet bench and cheering section.

Once past midfield. Andrighetti outraced the Naugy secondary. John Fodor accounted for the points which tied the game at S-S going straight up the middle. Raiders JIarcli 87 'After Naugamck had gone ahead in the second period on Foley's score, Peters got the Red Raiders in in high gear and pushed his club 87 yards. A poor Torrington punt gave Ihe Garnet the ball on the visitors 29 but this opportunity was muffed by the home forces as they were forced to give up the ball on the 13 and from here Peters took command.

Connect With Fodor In this drive, Uie senior quarterback flipped consecutive passes to Fodor, the first for 23 yards and the secrind for 44.. On the second hit, Fodor was on his way to the endzone and a score when Foley came up fast from his defensive position and bumped the Torrington halfback out of bounds on the NHS 9 which for the time being averted a Big Red TD. But four plays later, Peters carried it over from the eight after two more passes were off the mark and Andrighetti picked up a yard. Peters hit the endzone with the clock showing 36 seconds in the half. Andrighetti 's rush for the PAT was successful and it was a 16-16 contest as the teams went to the dressing room time intermission.
