EVENING TIMES, CUMBERLAND, MR, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1948 FUTEEH Decorations Will Receive Awards Best Home Decorations To Receive Prizes From Jaycees The practice of giving prizes lor the most attractive home decoration schemes during the Christmas season will be revived this year by the kjunior Association of Commerce, it 'was announced today. The annual awards were discontinued in recent years due the war. In order to make an equitable distribution, Marcus Whltmore, chairman of the contest committee, explained today that the city has been divided Into four zones lor the' purpose of judging Ten dollars first cash prize will be presented to the occupant of the best lighted resl- in South Cumberland, West Side, East Side and North End. A second prize of merchandise will also be awarded in each zone. There are no set rules governing the contest, Whitmore said.

Any residence which displays any outdoor decorative lighting will be eli- XJble for a prize and will be inspected by the judges. The Judges, route, however, will not talce them outside the city limits. Cakhler N-T-Oec. 7-13 Tree Over 250 Years Old Cut Down Here A large white oak believed to be more than 250 years of age, was cut yesterday in the back yard of Owen E. Hitchins, Buckingham Road, The Dingle. The tree measured about four and a half feet in diameter at its base, and stood nearly 100 feet high. Hitchins had it removed because it had decayed inside and was considered by tree experts to be dangerous.

When it was cut down, it was discovered that over three-fourths of the inside had rotted away, Urner Wigfleld, of this city, and A. D. Thompson, Hagerstown, were In charge of the crew that removed the tree. Seven men worked on the project all day, and Thompson estimated that the tree weighed nearly 30 tons.
