8 THE' TIMES, THtJBSDAY, DECEMBER 18SU. 8MTBTIZLD CLUB CATTLE BROW. Tne 1M cattle tne kail at Minrton wlfr clone ce ISO tons, and than probably, theiWore, as tn as 90 too of saleable beef on rkw. The 1ST a of ilmn shown hare we Ira more than 35 toot ire and than i oKUialy nor than 20 to ot nttoa In tbe hall. Vt ue live weignt oi the pip exhibited we are not informed.

Tha attempt to aaccrtaln It cn tha vaJjh bridca a they entered would probably Lara produced inch an intolerable protest on their part that it Mnr made, lint it is certain that pif meet jitaaint bat io a tnoch larger jroporticm of tha whole than that in which it ia offered In tha meat market of tha counlrj. Glutton, on tha othar band, juod aa ia tha ehow of ahaep, ia here aadoahtedlr a much smeller proportion, oi tha whole than it ia of oar reoeral meat aupplr. There ara eofae 6,000,000 cattle cf all ages in tha island, nearly 27,000,000 sheep, and onlr 2,000,000 pigs. There ara nrobebl) at leait 1.200,000 of tha firat and 7,000,000 of tha acond(of ail ces) slaughtered annually. If their respective weights, whether aa lambs and calve or full crown sheep and beasts, be conaidered, it will be fonnd that nearly aa tnoch mutton aa beef ia eaten every rear among us.

And if, aa in the case of Mr. Morrison's lamba, a fall weight and ripcnaia for consumption can be attained by eLeep within a year, while it takes two or three years to reach tha corresponding pitch of, maturity In tha cattla classes, there cannot be a doubt of tha greater economy of tha mutton manufacture aa compared with that of beef. Looking at tha pigs shown in the hall, and especially at tha extraordinary ripeness oi maturity attained at seven and eight months old in many of tha pens, we suppose that the pork and bacon snanuTaclure beata for rapidity, and. therefore. waste avoidance, all other kinds of meat The pir department ought, therefore, to possess especial interest for consumers and there is an admirable show hers in all tha divisions under which it ia arranged.

Tha pig classes are. however, remarkable chiefly for the admirable quality of the licrk ahtre breed aa here exhibited. Besides Berkshire there ara other black breeds Dorset. Essex, Suffolk and there ara large and small white breeds and all are shown in three classes, according to age, which is limited to 9, 12, and 18 months respectively. Besides these, there is a class for single pigs of any breed id any ago, in which, however, the chief honours fall to the Berkshire.

Tha Berkshire breed is, in fact, the main feature this year of the pig department of the Show. In "the younger class of the small white breed of pin the first price is taken by a pen exhibited by Mr. H. C. Worthy, of St.

Faith's, Xor folk. They are very thickly neshed at eight months cJd, and true to the type of the breed. JJer Majesty the Queen takes the second prize with' a good pen, though inferior in siie to Lord Radnor's highly commended pen. In tha next class, three months older, the Queen is again second; Lord Radnor taking tha first prixe with a wonderfully well fattened pen of well brgd pigs, with almost woolly coats. In the older class, the psn from Windsor takes the first prize, the pigs bains; of even quality and character, and Lord Radnora pigs, with the characteristic coat and perfection of fatness, are second.

The large white breed ia represented in scanty classes. Although there are no such niceties of distinction between a small and a large breed aa arise at Birmingham, what ia called a middle breed cornea in between them, yet there are characteristics independent of mere siie which rule an intelligent judgment and in the younger class of the laree broed white piga a caae in point arises. Sir. J. Banders, of Sutton, shows a pen which to an outaioer.

aeems to be distinctly the ripest and best in the whole class, bat the prize goes in preference to Messrs. Howard 'a excellent pen, of less apparent maturity. The" explanation cf the herdsman is that the pen in question is more properly a smaii wmta creed, not tnat it naa not size, enough, but, as he said, Twas the nosea aa done it. There waa no want of aize or weight for a '6 there was. indeed, distinguished merit in "all these essential points but in profile they are hardly true to an artifical ideal, and are, therefore, properly disqualified.

The older pens of the breed are remarkably fine, Mr. Sanders taking the treed ctrn for his 10 months old tsen. The black breeds, other than.Berkahires, are shown in small classes. Messrs. Coate, Wheeler, and J.

A. Smith being the principal prize takers. Mr. Coate's pigs in the class between 9 and 12 months are re markably equal and fine bnt the cup for the best of the breed goes to Mr. Wheeler's older pigs, of extraordinary thickness, evenness, quality, and weight.

As already said, the Berkshire breed furnishes the moat remarkable classes here. The whole of tha youwrer class is commended br the judges and Messrs. Harris and Biggs, of Leigh um. air. lucnara fowler, or and Mr.

J. P. King, of Wallinsford, are first in the classes of the three different ages. The cop goes to the last named exhibitor. Mr.

Fowler's pigs in the younger class are longer and of admirable quality ana ripeness, ana many will preter them, in the class for single pigs of any breed or ace, the Berkshire are unquestionably foremost. Mr. Brassey's 11 months old Berkshire is first rate ao are the Berkshiree shown by Mr. Tombs, Captain Green, and others but Mr. Wheeler's 21 months old Berkshire is actually first, and a 10 months old small white breed vie shown by Lord Radnor is placed second.

As a whole, the pork and bacon department here of our Christmas meat supply is satisfactory; and so is the promise of both our mutton and our beet, as they are respectively represented in the Smithfield Club Fat Cattle Show of 1S80. The meeting baa hitherto had the advantage of dry weather, and the hall has been daily well filled. Its character as a great meat market, as well as a great display, is declaring itself as its dose approaches and although business is not brisk, and the pices offered, and at length accepted, are not high, there are already man announcements over entries of cattle, sheep, and pigs of their sale to the butcher. But, considered as a great commercial centre, Agricultural hall ia this week much more than a mere meat market. Here are 100 different firms of xaanufacturars agricnltural machine food purveyors, seedsmen all seizing the opportunity of displaying their wares and meeting with their customers and the Smithfield Club wisely make them welcome, offering a place in their hall to almost every one who can in any way, however indirectly, contribute to the main purpose which the society have in view.

In order to obtain these admirable specimens of fattened cattle, sheep, and pigs, you must fence them in fields or feed them in houses you can procure all you want for either of these purposes here. You must thresh and cleanse, chop or grind, or crush, or cut, or pulp their food or you must bruise it, break it boil it, steam it, cook it tools and implements for all these purposes are offered here. You must reap, mow, dig the crope on which you feed your live stock here are reapers, mowers, potato diggers, in abundance. And, tracing the agricultural pro eess further still, you have' to grow Your crops before you harvest them here are tools lor hoeing them as they grow, for moulding them up, for singling them out, for harrowing or rolling them in their earlier stages, for carrying them to the rickyard, feeding house, or market, after all is done. Here, too, are machines for sowing them, drilling, dibbling, broadcasting But, before yea can profitably provide these growing crops for your cattle, sheep, and pigs, you must cultivate and fertilize the land.

The Club admit the connexion hare, and allow aeedsmen and manure dealers to exhibit all they have to offer and thus they give a place in their annual exhibition of fat stock to all kinds of cultivating tools ploughs, harrows, cultivators, rollars, clod crushers, acari Cars. Lastly, you have to put forth power in many different ways for 20 different purposes in the coarse of twelve months upon the farm all contributing more or leas directly to the end the aodety have in view and therefore the Smith field Club welcome to their fat cattle show steam engines of all ranks great ploughing engines, smaller threshing engines, locomotive engines, tiwctioe engines, for the heavier work of the farm smaller upright engines for the work of food pre para tico chaff cutting, cake breaking, turnip pulping, and so forth. What ia there, except, in te the land Itaalf.the Terr field of bia opera tkau, which the farmer anyhow requires, at any stage of the process culminating in we ia. caiue, beep, crpigs be means to exhibit here, which lie cannot get, by permission of. the Smithfield Club, within the AgricTdtural naJl thi eek We tklntr thl trnt society, which SO COod ttaturedly stretches its wslceme to aa many who sm but remotely influence the main object of the exhibition, might have gone one step further than it does.

It no longer allows any stand for the exhibition or the offer of agricultural journals or agricultural publications In the ball. Why should tha line of exclusion be drawn just here QUEEN'S COLLEGE, CORE. Aa extraerdiaerj visitation, extendi nj over two days, has jest been bald at Qaeea's College, Cork. The Visitors were the Uaster of the Bolls, Jt. Justice FittreraU, and Dr. 2I01intock, Freakiest of theCoUepof Eorraons.

ilr. aloxley, the student who made the arpeal, was heard at considerable length. It ap prarei froa his statement that on the arrival of air. 1 "smail froca America ia starch last a somber of stodeat Ued withia the precincts of the collero sad afread to preaeat Mr. rarnell with aa address, lit.

Hosier asserted that ao steps were taken by tbe president or council to prevent that meetinf, though tbey must have known it was held. He and soma ether students who were antagonistic to the proceeding attempted to get vp aa opposition meeting tbe following day, but it waa not LehL Sahseqaently the council were considering the charges again! some of me (luaenu reiertnce to the presentation oi the marts, and Mr. alexley aod some others came to the room of the council chamber for the purpoM of boarinc the decisiou. i While tbcte Mr. Moxley allrged he was asaaoltrd by the students wno admired air.

z'araeU politic, and tbe president, rushiag excitedly from tbe room, ordered tbe (toward to remove bun from the building. This he charged against the president as aa assault, lie was tben rusticated by tbe council and deprived of his scholarship, which was worth ISO. Jar. alexley charred the president with sympathy with the Peroelliie aid he challenged the president to ssy whether hi had not borne a prominent part in the rebellion of 1848, and whether, shortly before being offered the presidency, he had not virulently attacked the Queen's Collect. The president, in replying, declined to enter into the peculiar charges brought against himself by Ur.

iloxlry, but on tbe general question, be stated that the conduct of Mr. Uoxley was tha cause of the dissension that then took place among the students. Mr. Uoxley had originated a' serious quarrel infrontof the council room while tbe president and his colleagues were considering tbe ebsrge against the stodeaU ha, bad prepared the address. 'Wishing to prevent th matter becoming serioahe ordered tbe steward to remove Mr.

Moxley, bnt not in tbe manner that was represented. The Master of tbe Kolls, in giving judgment, said that Mr. Moxley had not in his original statement of appeal made any reiertnce to any prejudices against him or to any political views entertained by the 1 president. He regretted very much and could not sufficiently condemn too personal attack made upon tbe president ou matter of serious moment to which hi attention bad not been before called, and which were wholly irrelevant to the issue. The president, consulting his own position, had not noticed those charges, and they quite approved of the course be bad taken ia that respect.

There was no doubt that political meeting were held. No matter with what view or for what purposes promoted, they were a gross breach of discipline and ootdd not be tolerated, particularly In an institution hke the college. Tbe present case sboacd bow foolish such meetings were and how disastrous they might prove to aa institution like that. If political gathering were to take place they should be held outside the college, for all within the college should be peace and harmony. The president was perfectly justified, therefore, in the mmv, in whieh ha had treated Sir.
