Downey Modesto Share No 1 Spot In Ratings I place in the poll but the Warriors are only one point ahead of Patterson which knocked off Palma of Salinas 6-0 to get back into the ratings Le Grand retained Its seventh spot playing a good game with Mariposa Top Teams LARGE SCHOOLS for seventh place with six votes each Gustine won easily over Linden 31-0 to successfully defend its No 1 position among the small schools but the Redskins are being pushed hard by Mariposa Blank Le Grand The Grizzlies the Stanislaus only unbeaten and untied eleven blanked stubborn Le Grand 14-0 and trail Gustine by only two points Ripon and Sonora exchanged third and fourth places as Sonora had a tough time with Livingston before winning 6-0 and fell one spot while Ripon put down a good Orestimba team 14-12 to advance Orestlmba kept its fifth ney was third but stunning 16-7 upset of powerful Stagg knocked the Delta Kings from first to fourth and sent Turlock up a notch from fourth to third Modesto and Stagg will meet tomorrow night in Stockton with the outcome of that game having a lot to do with next ratings Undefeated but once tied Oakdale kept its fifth place spot despite a close call at Lincoln of Stockton The Mustangs pushed across the winning touchdown in the closing seconds for a 12-7 victory Edison of Stockton showing a strong running game last week in drubbing Davis 27-7 holds down the No 6 position Tracy and Atwater are tied Downey and Modesto High Schools coming off impressive wins are tied for the No 1 position in the large school football ratings while Gustine continues to hang on to the top spot among the small schools Downey blasted Franklin of Stockton 40-20 to preserve an undefeated record as the Knights are 5-0-1 The only mar on their record Is a 0-0 tie with defensive minded Turlock Modesto snuffed out the Lodi Flames 25-7 behind hot-running feet of halfback Bob Green to give the Panthers a 5-1 season mark The Panthers and Knights each received 26 out of a possible Top Offensive Teams Will Collide In CCC St High School of Stockton will be at Tracy High and Lincoln of Stockton will be at Manteca but the Valley Oak feature football contest will be a non-loop encounter between Oakdale and Yuba City in Oakdale The Yuba City Honkers undefeated in five games and rated among the top five schools in Superior California should give mighty defense a sturdy test Halfback Bernard Oliver with 894 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns is the type of runner that can give a defense fits He is the second leading ball carrier in Northern California behind wonder boy Stan (Touchdown) Brown If the Mustangs can stop Oliver they should prevail ground attack has produced 1007 yards in four contests as the Mustangs stand 4-0-1 Close Games Oakdale however has had a pair of "cliff the last two weeks edging Manteca 21-20 and going into the final minute to nip Lincoln 12-7 The St -Tracy clash will pit two of the most explosive offenses as Tracy has the top passer and St features the leading rushers Tracy will rely on the passing arm of Scooter Longmire to produce points Longmire has completed 105 of 160 passes for 1-143 yards and 10 touchdowns St moves on the ground with Ben Valverdi and Bob Podesto packing the ball Between them they have gained 715 yards The Bulldogs are fresh off two non-league victories over Los Banos 27-14 and Lynbrook 45-6 St comes off a smashing 34-14 win over St This will be the first VOL game for both clubs as Oakdale Lincoln and Manteca have been the only clubs to see league action so far Oakdale is 2-0 and Lincoln and Manteca each show a loss Manteca Winless The Lincoln Trojans and Manteca Buffaloes will be out to get into the league win column for the first time Lincoln has shown a potent offense with Ed Massey and Dave Rea among the leading ball carriers and Steve McFarland beginning to click on his passes Manteca winless in five games could be primed for an upset as the Buffaloes were humiliated last week by Atwater 46-19 and may be ready to stampede back ton Downey holds down second place wilh a 2-0-1 record while Edison is 1-1-1 in league outings Running Quarterbacks The Knights have had trouble with running quarterbacks this season and will face the league's best in McKinley Parker 99 sprinter Turlock still in the race with a 1-0-2 mark will try to add to its winning record with a win over cellar-dwelling Davis of Modesto The Bulldogs have allowed just one touchdown in six games this season and figure to give the Spartans a rough evening in the Modesto i College Stadium The final CCC tilt looks like a tossup as the Lodi Flames (1-2) host the winless Franklin Yellowjackets of Stockton at the hands of the defensive minded Turlock squad Stagg is rated a three-point choice in most quarters The individual leaders will be in action in this one with Bob Green and Jim Rayl carrying the load for the Panthers with Steve Scott Pat Jacquez and Dan Bohannon the big guns for Stagg Jacquez tops the rushers with 592 yards in 62 carries for a 95 average while Green is second with 551 yards Scott has gained 464 to hold down third Rayl has completed 48 of 81 attempts for 708 yards while Bohannon Is 27 for 55 for 542 Both quarterbacks have thrown seven TD passes The Downey High Knights of Modesto could face a toughie when they host Edison of Stock- The Central California top two offensive powers will meet head-on tomorrow night in Pacific Memorial Stadium when the league-leading Modesto High Panthers take on the Stagg Delta Kings in the CCC feature match The potent Panthers have romped to three straight CCC wins and have racked up 106 points in these outings for a 35-point average The Delta Kings upset by Turlock last week have tallied 93 counters in three outings for a 31-point average The game shapes up as a "must encounter for the Kings since a loss would drop them to a 2 2 mark And despite last upset Modesto High long striding halfback Bob Green is this week's Modesto Bee-KBFE-KOVR prep of the week after leading the Panthers to a 25-7 win over Lodi High The 168-pound junior gained 206 yards in 20 carries for a 103 average scored three touchdowns caught four passes for 57 yards and intercept ed a pass In three Central California Conference games he has rushed for 395 yards and owns 551 for the season He is tied for the No 1 spot in the prep scoring derby points Eleven players have scored at least 40 points LEADING SCORERS MVC Clubs Seek No 1 Spot In Race Mariposa Will Host Denair In Top Tilt Oalcdale Must Stop Yuba City's Oliver The Oakdale High School Mustangs will face a monumental task tomorrow night if they hope to keep their winning record intact when they host powerful Yuba City High The Mustangs undefeated but once tied have a fine defense but they have not faced the likes of Yuba Bernard Oliver a fleet 175-pound halfback Oliver is the second leading ball carrier in Northern California with 894 yards in 85 carries for a 104 acerage He has scored 15 touchdowns His top game this season came as Yuba City crushed Placer 51-12 He carried the ball 21 times for 368 yards and scored six of his eight TDs Oliver missed last game with a sore leg as the Honkers soared past Roseville 34-12 but his mates hadly missed him running away to a 28-0 halftime lead Reports out of Yuba City say Oliver is anxious to get back Into action and a healthy Oliver could mean an unhealthy Oakdale The Honkers boast a 5-0 record while the Mustangs are 4-0-1 including a couple of narrow wins over Manteca and Lincoln three varsity frosh-soph and are unbeaten this season and have a combined record of 13-0-2 The varsity is 4-0-1 the sophs 5-0 and the frosh 4-0-1 The Mustang varsity has not tasted defeat since the last game of the 1964 season when it bowed to Sonora Since that time it is 11-0-3 Dave Lee Is Versatile On Grid Field Dave Lee has proved a pretty valuable man to have around as far as Coach Chuck Hughes of the Downey Knights is concerned Lee the second string quarterback behind Dave Win-kelman filled quite a gap a few weeks back when Hughes pressed him into service as a center on punts and extra points a problem shared by many prep teams Then last week against Franklin Lee started as a defensive end and turned in a good effort as the Knights posted a 40-20 victory The young junior has also done a good job as a passer during his brief action this year Modesto Gains Revenge From Lodi Flames Last 25-7 win by Modetso High School over Lodi High was especially sweet to Panther football Coach Jay Pattee It njoved Modesto into first place in the Central California Conference with a 3-0 record and marks the second straight year the Panthers have won Lodi won every game in the series from 1951-64 until Modesto turned the tables last season 16-6 Tracy's No 2 Man Looks Like No I Tracy High School junior quarterback Allen Wilson finally got a chance to prove what he could do last week against Lyn-brook High of Santa Clara The 5-11 153-pound signal caller has been operating as the No 2 quarterback behind Scooter Longmire one of the top passers in Northern California When Longmire had his knee banged up late in the first quarter Wilson got his chance and completed five of eight passes for 77 yards as the Bulldogs rolled to a 45-6 victory In three games he has made good on 12 of 21 passes for 152 yards which is not too bad for a boy who has some big shoes to fill Touchdown Film Is Favorite Re-Run Everybody is smiling in Turlock after the Bulldogs knocked off the Stagg Delta Kings last week 16-7 The happiest man at the Turlock Quarterback Club meeting of course was Coach Les Ratzlaff He was so elated over first touchdown iri 16 a 30-yard pass play from Steve Kirby to Doug Adams in the third that he showed the film of the TD over eight times tion to the throwing air power Mariposa also boasts a strong toe on Anderson who has kicked 10 extra points and three field goals carries for an average of five per carry Sonora too is rid-iing a three-game win streak after losing the league opener to Atwater Livingston meanwhile hopes to snap out of its on-again off-again win streak and even its overall record at 3-3 It defeated Ceres in the league 7-6 but lost to Sonora last weekend 6-0 While the league wars continue Ceres takes a battling powerful Gustine the top rated small school in the district Frosh-Soph Standings CCC First place in the Mountain Valley Conference football race goes right to the firing line tomorrow night with a pair of contests Atwater and Los Banos boasting the top rshers passer and scorers battle Sonora and Livingston with unbeaten league marks hanging in the balance Los Banos 1-0 in the loop and 3-3 overall hosts Sonora (1-1 and 4-2) while Atwater (1-0 and 3-2) tangles with Livingston (1-1 and 2-3) in Livingston Atwater is the hottest team in the five-school circuit riding a three-game win streak after dropping its first two non-league contests The Ron Pisk is easily the leading air artist with 42 completions in 87 attempts for a 617 yards and seven touchdowns Los Gary Caropresso has the league rushing race well in hand with 642 yards in 108 Football as many starts tomorrow night when they host Denair High The Grizzlies have won two loop tilts and six games overall while Denair lists one loss and a tie in league action and two wins two losses and and the tie in the overall picture While the Grizzlies are battling to extend their league lead Ripon Orestimba of Newman and Le Grand will be out to break up the three-way deadlock for second place Orestimba invades Le Grand in a game rated as a toss-up and Ripon is expected to notch its second league win against one loss against Hilmar That game will be played in Ripon hopes for an upset ride on the shoulders of Kent Harris its versatile quarterback who leads not only the Denair team in rushing but all of the Southern League Harris has lugged the leather 65 times this season for 520 yards and a sparkling average of eight yards per carry He also leads the league in scoring with 48 points and is third in the league in the passing department with 44 completions in 94 attempts and one touchdown The Mariposa-Denair game could be decided on quarterback performance The i 1 i Bruce Anderson leads the league in passing with 54 completions in 113 attempts He has pitched Mariposa 748 Over TV Lead The Escalon High School Cougars (2-0) can move into undisputed possession of first place in the Trans-Valley League tomorrow night if they can defeat host Patterson (0-1) Gustine (2-0) the Stanislaus top rated small school draws a loop bye and will play Ceres of the Mountain Valley Conference The TV other football contest will pit Hughson (0-1) at Linden (0-2) Top Rushers Mike Cremer and Jerry Connelly the two top rushers will clash Cremer has 492 yards and Connelly 512 Cougar quarterback Dave Olivieri had his best game of the season last week completing 11 of 18 for 226 yards Patterson edged Palma of Salinas last week 6-0 turning a blocked punt attempt into the only touchdown Its first string quarterback Dave Sharp saw only limited action in that one but should be ready for the Cougars Hughson has won only one game this season in five games but has an offense that can generate some points Ed Stanley with 367 yards rushing and eight touchdowns is the top threat Linden bowed to Gustine in its opener 31-0 and will be seeking to bounce back mainly on the one-two running punch of Bill Morgan and Bob Costigliolo Between them they have amassed 568 yards Attack loaded Redskins featuring a well-balanced attack could make it a long night for Ceres Ceres got off to a fine start winning three of its first four non-league games but has been knocked off twice in MCV action The Bulldogs were blasted last week by Los Banos 32-0 Their offense is guided by quarterback Jerry McBride who has passed for 527 yards and two scores Larry Collins is their top runner with
