10 KOKOMO (Inrf.) MORNING TIMES Sund 25, MM 10 KOKOMO (M.) MORNING TIMES junpoy, Broncos: don't jest about Jets iittiA and 'ByFREDMCMANE UPI Sports Writer The Denver Broncos are quick to say that they are a better football team than they have shown this season, but talk is cheap as far as the New York Jets are conerned. The Broncos, losers in their first two starts this season, will have a hew coach in Ray Malavasi this Sunday when they host the Jets at Bears Stadium; and the new mentor is anxious to prove his team's worth in the American Football League. "We found several encouraging things about our play against Boston," Malavasi said in his first interview as head coach, "and we feel we are capable of winning several games this year. At any given time, we are capable of beating any team in the league and we intend to prove this starting Sunday." These are words that might be expected from a new coach, but they're extremely optimistic since the Broncos will be facing the hottest team in the league. The Jets, paced by Joe Namath's five touchdown passes, crushed Houston 52-13 last weekend and Bronco fans can still remember vividly the 45-7 defeat the Oilers hung on Denver in the season opener.

Comparative scores mean 'Non-passing' back throws bombs as MSU downs Penn EASTL A I i (UPI)--Jimmy Raye, a quarterback they said couldn't pass, fir.ed touchdown strikes of 36 and 50 yards Saturday to fire mighty Michigan State to a 42-8 rout of hapless Penn State. Raye's long passes, both to star end Gene Washington, paced the season's second straight win for MSU, defending Big Ten national" champion. The Nittany. Midway in the third period Raye dropped back from the 50 and flung the ball 45 yards to Washington who snared it and tumbled the final five yards into the end zone. Penn State stayed near the powerful Spartans through only the first 10 minutes of the game. Then halfback Clint Jones, running to his left on a broken play, rambled 29 yards.

He plunged the last eight yards in two tries for the first score. Halfback Dwight Lee set up the second Spartan touchdown with a 36-yard run halfway through the second quarter. One play later, Lee skirted left end 12 yards and fullback Bob Apisa took a short pitch from Raye and bulled over the goal line. Apisa, scored again before Coach Duffy Daugherty emp- N. (UPI) --Quarterback Alan Pastrana ran for one score and passed for three others, two of then to halfback Ernie Torain, who also ran for a third touchdown, to lead Maryland to a 34-7 rout of Wake Forest Saturday. The victory was the first for new head Coach Lou Saban, who dropped four seniors from his squad after Maryland lost its opener to Penn State last week. The only other player besides Pastrana and Torain to figure in the scoring was fullback Ralph Donofrio, who caught one touchdown pass from Pastrana. After taking a 7-0 first period lead on a 49-yard pass from Pastrana to Torain, Maryland ripped the game wide open in the second period with a three- touchdown splurge, two of which were set up by sophomore John Hetrich, who recovered a pair of key fumbles.

Razorbacks top Tulsa FAYETTEVILLE, A (UPI) --Senior safety Marline Bercher opened the scoring with a 64-yard punt return and tailback Bruce Maxwell blasted over for two short touchdowns Saturday to give Arkansas a27- 8 victory over Tulsa. The win extended the Razorbacks' regular season winning streak to 23 games. The Arkansas defense, sparked by tackle Loyd Phillips and middleguard David Cooper, bottled up Tulsa's passing attack, forcing fumbles and interceptions that led to two Razorback scores.

Maxwell's scoring plunges of two and one yards were both set up by Cooper, who recovered a fumbled Tulsa punt attempt and intercepted a pass on the Hurricane 37. Maxwell was (lie game's leading rusher with 122 yards on 27 carries. singles to lead the Chicago attack. The loss left the Dodgers' magic number at seven. Both they and second-place Pittsburgh have eight games left to play.

Any combination of Los Angeles victories or Pittsburgh defeats totaling seven will give the Dodgers their second straight National League pennant. The Cubs jumped off to a 1-0 lead on back-to-back singles by Don Kessinger and Glenn Becfcert and Billy Williams' ground out in the first inning. The second Chicago run came in the fourth inning on singles by Williams and Santo, a sacrifice fly by Ernie Banks, and Stewart's grounder. That run chased Dodger starter Joe Moeller, who took his fourth loss in six decisions. It was Jenkins' sixth triumph against seven losses, He struck out seven Dodger batsmen. Jenkins moved in to the regular starting rotation Aug. 25, andin eight starts since has four straight wins. The victory at least temporarily delayed for the Cubs their 100th defeat of the season and a clinching of last place in the National League race. little, however, and if the Broncos have anything going for them it's the fact that they've beaten the Jets in Denver each of the last two years.

The Jets, paced by Namath's passing and the running of Matt Snell, seem to have it over the Broncos in this match, though, and are rated a strong 14-point choice. In other Sunday action, Kansas City is at Boston, Houston at Buffalo and San Diego at Oakland. The Patriots will be making their first home appearance of the season after splitting their first two games and faced with the task of stopping the high-scoring Chiefs, who have won their first two games. Kansas City features apotent running attack centered around Bert Coan and rookie Mike Garrett, and this figures to help the Chiefs since Boston's biggest defensive asset is its blitzing attack. The Pats have a capable runner in Jim Nance, who currently leads the league in rushing, but the Chiefs' offense looks to be too much to handle for Boston.

Kansas City is tabbed a 10-point pick. Buffalo lost its first two games but rebounded with 'a strong 58-24 victory over Miami last weekend. The Bills have two fine runners in Wray Carlton and rookie Bobby Burnett While Houston bases its. attack on the passing arm of 39-year-old George Blanda. The Oilers looked bad in losing to the Jets last weekend and the Bills seem to finally be on the move thanks to the return to form of quarterback Jack Kemp.

Buffalo rates an eight-point choice in this one. San Diego may be a bit rusty after a two week layoff, but the Raiders don't seem to have enough to handle the Chargers just the same. Oakland (1-2) has the league's second best defense but the Chargers (2-0) boast the league's top quarterback in John Hadl and have a wide-open offense that has registered 51 points to their opponents' seven in two games. The Raiders will put the ball in the air a majority of the time with Art Powell, Clem Daniels and Tom Mitchell ranked among the league's best in receiving. Earlham nips Franklin, 7-6 RICHMOND, Ind.
