She was chosen from among 120 applicants to be a LSU Golden Girl dance line member.

"I'm not sure the merchants really realize how important they were," Miss Durrett said.

"They really got us ready for the (national) pageant. "I may have gotten a lot of dresses and shoes, sure, but I teli you, I used every single thing when I got out there." "People would come up to me and say 'Hey, where'd you get all this Miss Penn said. "I liked the fact I could brag on my state pageant and was really proud to say that the city that hosted my pageant had donated those things." (Continued from Page IB) Among the many appearances the two titleholders made during tin year was a June visit to the welcome center on 1 55 "in Osyka for Hospitality Month activities. Miss Penn said she particularly enjoyed having "local connections." "It was nice having people come up and say they knew my father or my grandfather." The pair also appeared at the Jitney Jungle food fair in Jackson, where they met celebrities like Kenny Rogers and "The Young and the Restless" star Terry Lester. Their other official appearances included trips to Dallas.

Houston, and Memphis, Natchez, Holly Springs, Tupelo, Canton, Clinton, Oxford, Jackson. Greenville and. of course, McComb. Among other things Miss Durrett has done public relations work for Bryant Air Conditioning; Miss Penn has appeared in a television commercial promoting sober driving for the Department of Public Safety. The two also cut ribbons, judged pageants and rode in parades.

After becoming a "beauty queen" Miss Durrett said she felt some pressure from others to maintain a certain image. Miss Penn said she stayed busy, at first, convincing her friends she was the same person she had been before she earned the crown. She told them it was like there were two Vallies the person on the stage and the teen ager. "Sometimes it can interfere with friendships." she professional model and hopes to own her own modeling agency. She has appeared in a Jackson magazine, "Unmistakably Jackson." She enjoys dancing, water skiing, 4-wheeling and aerobics.

Jennifer Rae Walpole Ashley Nicole McCleskey Miss McCleskey, of DeKalb, is the 16-year-old daughter of Terry and Peggy McCleskey. She is a student at Kemper Academy and plans to attend college on a basketball scholarship and to study fashion merchandising. Her interests include modeling, basketball, swimming, softball and mud- Miss Walpole, 17, is a senior at Olive Branch High School where she is also a member of the National Honor Society. Currently a part-time hostess at Applebee's Restaurant, she has tentative plans to pursue a career in marketing. Her hobbies include water ckiincr nlavinO (hp niflnn McClesky bogging.

Sheila Rena White Denice Michelle McCrillis Miss Saylor, 21, is a Louisiana State University student who resides in Biloxi.

Her parents are Ed and Donna Saylor. Her pageant titles include Miss Jackson County Air Show 1986, 1986 Camellia Queen and Miss Mississippi Teen-ager 1985. She is active in LSU's Campus Crusade for Christ, is Miss McGlowan, of Oxford, is the 19-year-old daughter of Alberta McGlowan Bryant and the late Rev. James T. McGlowan.

A graduate of Lafayette High School, she is a student at the University of Mississippi. Among her pageant titles include Miss Lafayette Miss McCrillis, of Magee, is the 17-year old daughter of Robert and Martha McCrillis of Magee. She is a senior at Magee High and is employed by the Village Fish House in Magee where she is a cashier. She has won the titles of Miss Mardi Gras and Miss Southern Sunshine USA. 1 i'A Miss White, a 1987 graduate of the Barbizon modeling school, won the Spring Gateway to the Delta contest in Yazoo City and also took first place in the Miss Hemisphere Yazoo County and finished among the top 15 in the Mississippi Miss Hemisphere.

The 17-year-old is a student at Yazoo City High School and Saylor McGlowan County, Miss Debutante of Holly Springs, Miss Teen Review of Oxford and Miss Tennessee Shrine of Jackson, Tenn. Deborah Lynn Noel White McCrillis Miss McCrillis plans to attend the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg and major in business administration. She enjoys water skiing and photography. on the Chi Omega sorority community service commission and is a member of the LSU Fashion Board. A graduate of Jefferson Davis Junior College, she plans to be a television news reporter and wife and mother of a happy family with strong religious beliefs.

Mitzi Jo Swanson a part-time employee at Essco Drugs. She is undecided about her future career and lists modeling as her hobby. Her parents are Ray and Deborah White of Yazoo City. Marianna Jackson Wilcox Melody Mariah Owen Miss Noel, of Pascagoula, is the 22-year-old daughter of Bennie and Martha Noel. A graduate of R.H.

Watkins High School and Meridian Community College, she is a registered dental hygienist with Wayne T. Adkinson, DMD, Moss Point. In previous pageant contests she was a semifinalist in the Seventeen Cover Model Miss Swanson, 23, is the daughter of Royce and Kathleen Swanson. She is a graduate student at the University of Southern Mississippi and resides in Hattiesburg. She attended Northwest Mississippi Junior College and this year received her bachelor of science degree in Miss Owen, of Jackson, enjoys several hobbies which include biking, Chinese cooking, singing and gymnastics.

She is the 17-year old daughter of Terry and Mariah Owen of Jackson and is a graduate of Jackson Academy. Miss Owen has won the Noel Miss Wilcox is a 16-year old student at Carthage High School and is a native of the town. She is the daughter of Linda Kaye Wilcox and Thomas E. "Sonny" Wilcox. In 1982 she competed in the Mississippi Little Miss Hemisphere pageant in Jackson, and went on to model in the National Little Miss Contest in Laurel, was chosen the MS Broiler Festival Queen in Forest and selected Most Beautiful in the 1986 Jones Junior College Beauty Pageant.

Anita Doll Oaks Owen titles of Imperial Miss America and Mississippi Teen Imperial Miss. She plans to attend Mississippi State University and major in broadcasting and communications with plans to be an investigative reporter with a major television network. Swanson Family Life Studies, with an emphasis in child development, from the University of Southern Mississippi. She was first alternate to Miss Mississippi in both 1987 and 1988. She also has appeared on The Nashville Network program "You Can Be A Star." She plans to teach college after obtaining her master's degree while lobbying lawmakers for pro-family legislation.

She also plans to continue her hobby of entertaining. Wilcox Hemisphere and National Little Miss Hemisphere Model pageants in Philadelphia, Pa. Asked in a personal history form to reveal the person she considers the greatest person in the world, she named her mother. In the future, she plans to pursue a career in medicine. Miss Oaks, 21, is a student at Memphis State University and works at the Racquet Club of Memphis as assistant catering manager.

She is the daughter of Roy and Dorothy Oaks and lives in Corinth. Her hobbies include dancing, water skiing, barefooting, golfing and traveling. Dana Brooke Pierce 'il Jennifer Renee Winters Kelli Sue Tarter Oaks Rl I Miss Pierce, a senior at Kirk Academy in Grenada, was born in Seoul, South Korea. The 16-year old is the daughter of Larry and Sissy Pierce of Grenada. The family operates a restaurant in Grenada and Miss Pierce helps out as needed.

She has won the title of Miss if? She has participated in the Miss Mid-South Fair pageant in Memphis, Tenn. Mary Christina Pearson Miss Winters is a 17-year-old who was born in Memphis, but now hails from Southhaven. In 1988 she won the Junior Miss DeSoto County pageant and in April of this year placed first in the Miss Springfest pageant. The daughter of Rebecca Winters and Edward E. Winters, she plans to own a one day and is currently a Miss Tarter, 20, is an Ecru resident who works as a computer operator at North Mississippi Medical Center.

The daughter of Danny and Linda Richardson, she graduated from North Pontotoc Attendance Center and attended Itawamba Junior College. A dancer for eight years, Pierce yeen Grenada County and plans to have a career in the entertainment field or broadcast journalism. Her talents include drama, public speaking, dance and creative writing. Hobbies vary from skiing to playing golf with her dad. Winters formalwear shop Miss Pearson, 19, is the daughter of Charles H.

Pearson Jr. and Mary Catherine Pearson of Clarksdale. She is a student at Northwest Community College and plans to attend the University of Mississippi. Her hobbies include twirling baton, watching football and baseball games, cheerleading and collecting helium student employed part-time with Electrical voice, jazz, tap and dance and horseback riding and snow Contractors Inc. She has studied enjoys aerobics, skiing.

Tarter she has worked as a model and was selected Most Beautiful at North Pontotoc. She plans to earn a bachelor's degree in either computer science or business. Stephanie Maria TenEyck Leslie Jean Prestwood Pearson balloons. Jackie Jill Samsel Cynthia Lynn Prather Miss Prestwood, of Jackson, is the 17-year old daughter of Dude and Jean Prestwood of Jackson. She is a senior at Hillcrest Christian School where she has won the title of Most Beautiful.

She has been competing in pageants since 1984 and her titlps inrlnrtp I ittlo Mica Tppn Miss Prather is the daughter of Joyce Prather of Bogue Chitto. Further information was not available. 'f Miss TenEyck, 19, a Laurel resident, is the daughter of Steve and Debbie TenEyck. She is a student at the University of Mississippi. She returns to this year's pageant having won the second alternate spot in the 1988 Miss Mississippi USA Pageant.

She also has been selected a Ton Beautv in the Miss Samsel, of Olive Branch, is the 20-year-old daughter of Richard and Jackie Samsel. A graduate of Olive Branch High School, she is a student at the University of Mississippi, majoring in fashion merchandising. Her only previous pageant experience was in 1986 when she was chosen Miss Olive Prestwood Mississippi, Miss Teen Jackson, Miss Teen Metro and Hillcrest. TenEyck 0)e Miss para(je 0f Beauties. She is the daughter of Bob and Sandy Usey. In 1983 she was the second alternate at the Miss Mississippi Teen USA Pageant.
