Every year Granny attends the International Brotherhood of Magicians convention.

GRANNY'S MODERN, two-bedroom home on Footprint Island, had to have a room added for space to work on her numerous hobbies which, along with entertaining family, grandchildren and friends from various parts of the world, keep her occupied every hour of the day. Much of her time is now spent egg shell decorating, spoon' collecting, stamp col- ting alone in a service club, I'd walk up to his table, lift his chin and start pulling tricks on him." She added, "I could get away with more than a younger person could have." At 49, Granny was the oldest enlistee ever to be in the WACs. She was a grandmother and slipped under the -maximum age limit by a mere three months. EVEN NOW, when Granny sees a young man in uniform, she. forgets she's retired.

She starts i a conversation with him as if he were one of her boys and if he looks the least bit glum, she pulls her sponge rabbits out of her pocket and soon has not only the soldier smiling but any other persons who happen to be near. m' Times Photo by Janic Whipple Island 1 bsaassaiii?) 1M) ABBOTT-JAMISON SALES 123 9th Street North ill Enjoys The Scenery At MEMBER, THE ORDER OF THE GOLDEN RULt oinnouncement Matouk, Mr. Charles J. "but the only evidence of her slowing down, at 76, is defective hearing. During her stint in the Women's Army Corps from 1943-59, Granny entertained servicemen in 42 countries and 37 states.

"I'd give anything to be with my boys in Vietnam but they tell me I'm too old," she said with a dis gusted look on her usually, smiling face. She said she rode troop trains between Tokyo and Sa-sebo giving magic shows for Korea-bound troops, and performed in every service club in Japan for Army, Navy and Air Force men. Between Japan, Formosa and Okinawa, she traveled 43,000 miles, giving 1,410 shows in 28 months. When Granny entered the entertainment field of the WACs, she was not a magician. She was interested in helping servicemen have a good time wherever they were.

Teaching hospitalized men finger-painting or assisting them in making postage stamp mosaics, was part of her task. The art of "deception" started with, pocket magic, using small cards and tiny sponge rabbits that could be carried in her pockets to entertain the boys. More elaborate tricks were added, calling for professional magic props which led to her becoming an active member girls did their' own cooking aboard on a wood-fueled grill. At night, they would stop and bed down in sleeping bags and puptents on shore. The girls said they were well-received at all of their stops along the way and they sfelt they learned a lot about the people of the different states they visited during the Huckleberry Finn cruise.

ONE OF Granny's pet peeves in retiring to civilian life was having to put aside her WAC uniform. It still fits and when she models it for guests, her face lightens, her eyes twinkle and her comment is, "Now I feel properly dressed." Age, according to Granny, was a contributing factor to her success in working with the GIs whom she said she treated as if they were her own boys.
