Cut back tops of taller trees if they cannot be reached with spray.

Read Label Handle pesticides carefully. Methoxychlor, malathion, and captan are among the safer pesticides, but none should be handled carelessly. Do not use any pesticide without, reading directions and precautions. For further information on the timing of sprays for specilic pests, ask your county agricultural asent for Spray Calendar 90-A, "Pest Control Recommendations for Home Orchards." The agent's address is Room 211. P.

0. Building, New Brunswick. Yellowish blisters on your boxwood leaves are caused by a small maggot called the boxwood leaf miner. You may sec small orange flics about a tenth of an inch long flying around your boxwood plants. These tiny flics are the adults which lay eggs that later hatch into leaf miners.

Most varieties of boxwood are subject to attack. However, dwarf English boxwood is gch-erally immune to attack by this insect pest. Spray infested boxwood plants in early May when adult flies start emerging. To make one gallon of spray material use 2 tablespoons of 50 per cent DDT wettable powder or 4 teaspoons of 25 per cent DDT liquid concentrate plus 4 tablespoons of 25 per cent malathion wettable powder or 2 tcaspoous of 57 per cent liquid concentrate in one gallon of water. Apply this spray in early May and repeat the application in two weeks.

Dimethoate (Cygon) may also be used as directed on the label. Most fruits me altackrd hy a variety of fx'sts unci require exact timing of sprays lor protection. When you spray fruit trees, you must use the risht materials in tiie correct amounts, and apply them with adequate equipment at the proper time. A good general purpose spray for pest control on all fruit is a mixture of methoxychlor. mala-thion, and captan.

You can buy these mgrcdienls ready-mixed or mix them yourself. Carefully measure the material that you intend to use. The label on the general purpose mixture will tell how much to use. If you buy materials separately, use 3 tablespoons of methoxychlor 50 per tent wettable powder and 2 tablespoons of captan 30 per cent wettable powder for each gallon of water. Don't use more than is recommended, since that extra spoonful will not increase the efficiency of control.

Timing Important Timing of sprays is important. You'll get poor control if you spray at the wrong time or omit certain sprays. In addition, use the riKlit equipment. Dwarf apple trees can be sprayed with a small 3-gallon compressed air sprayer, but larger trees require other equipment. Trombone-type sprayers, hose-end sprayers, and wheelbarrow sprayers have proven satisfactory for backyard plantings.

It takes a lot of spray to cover a large apple tree properly. A large, mature apple tree requires approximately 15 gallons for each spray after the foliage is out. Certain cultural practices aid greatly in insect and disease control. Remove all dropped fruit from under the trees at regular intervals during the summer, weedtiez WONDER BAR if I raUviku liliili tacit aae OMTmcai.cA M(aieK iNrtnaoMiiMiNTAi, aaiHaeai, niLia iaat taaaa oui iiaet laxaa aaaaa ooOQO Ull CAMF tllllMl in0IH MM WHM CruO ihiuI tu'iai ui'mj P'l BUSTER CRABBE has a pool to fit it! only 25C per 1,000 SQUARE FEET A solid wax bar.
