What she's got right now is sex appeal, songstress showmanship and the first of four of her very own specials on ABC. Lola appears on ABC Thursday from 10-11 p.m., Eastern time, backed up by Hal Linden and Muhammad Ali. Miss Falana makes a stunning star in a succession of costumes, and she also combines cool poise with a sultry innocence that can be a knockout. She explains her name by saying she was looking for something that would reflect the black experience and her black heritage and Lola Falana summed it all up.

"In Swahili it means Debbie," she threw in. The show gives Hal Linden, alias Barney Miller, a chance to sing again in an.appealing skit in which he is an understanding, fey bum and Lola enacts a ragamuffin girl who wants to'run away from home. They do a duet of "Corner of the Sky" from the Broadway show If Lola knows how to put over a song, she still may draw some flack from the older folks when she belts out a mod version of "Stormy Weather" that misses the low-down pulsing beat of old fashioned blues. The departing epic is "Joe and Sons," whose widower is an Italian-American. Its replacement is "Popi," whose widower is a Puerto Rican trying to support his two boys by holding three parttime jobs here. ETHNIC CHANGES aside, the switch confirms that widowers really are in on TV this season. CBS is particularly strong on widowers. Its since-canceled "Three for the Road" series had a widowed photographer with two young sons.

Its lead character in "Bronk" still is a widower, a cop who supports a crippled There's another widowed gendarme on TV. He's played by Karl Maiden in ABC's "Streets of San Francisco." Maiden has a daughter in his series. Television's best-known widower is NBC's Fred Sanford, who has a grown son. In the new "Grady" series, NBC has another widower. He has a daughter, grown and married.

On Jan. 30, NBC will give us yet another widower in "The Practice." He's a veteran doctor whose son also is a doctor. What about widows on TV? They are rare. Come mid- season, the only practising on the tube will be CBS' "Phyllis," who has a 17-year-old daughter. THE DIVORCE court section of TV's Parents Without Partners also is thin this season.

It has no divorced fathers at all, but it did start the season 1 about the divorced mother of a new bride. Alas, divorced the show from its scheduled But take heart, fans.
