Agar, County Tax Collector said Tuesday he would open an office in Colonial Acres Immediately to serve residents there and in Le- Moyne Gardens in paying poll taxes. The area now Is included in Precinct 32. He had previously announced that the Colonial Acres area would be made a separate voting precinct, but due to the fact residents may vote only in the precinct in which they have paid poll taxes, the action would have been of no direct benefit to the voters until next year.

Tax Issue Paramount To Citizens By JAMES MARLOW WASHINGTON, Jan.

12 ---Will my tax be raised this year and, if so, why? This question probably hits closer home with most people than anything else in President Truman's budget message. This much is certain: There will be no boost hi the tax you have to pay on your 194ft 4 Mr. Truman is talking about board courts on a portion of con- A A A. 1 i er i fit Lk A 4 i Tourist Club Is Formed At Mission MISSION, Jan. tion of a tourist club is underway by the Mission Chamber of Commerce with two charter members.

And he wants Con- club is to give the tourists of the gress to do that by July 1.

Mission area something to do and Lot of Figuring Congress will do a lot of figure-Juggling and arguing before any decision is reached. Mr. Truman is talking about two kinds of taxes: 1. He wants a straight-out tax increase of $4 billion. This he wants mostly from the profits of corporations and maybe -from the income of individuals in the upper and middle income brackets.

2, He wants the Social Security tax raised and he wants Congress to create a health insurance plan, which would call for a brand new 4TA 1 some type of entertainment. The Social Security tax now is paid by employers and employes; and the health insurance tax would come out of your pay check, too. Figures Listed How much would all this come to as a tax increase on business and the public? About billion altogether the first billion under number one above and about billion under number two.

Roughly, and in round figures, this is how Mr. Truman explains his call for new and higher taxes: Take the billion tax raise First Lt. Alfred P. Last Times Today Dorothy Lamour George Montgomery "LULU BELLE" Chapture 7 of SUPERMAN Cartoon News To stay out of the red, the government must collect in taxes as much money as it pays out in expenses. But in ning July I--so Mr. Truman says the fiscal year begin the overnment should spend more $42 billion, or $1 billion than it expects to collect. Besides the government debt- built up tremendously when the government had to borrow money to run the war--is running around $252 billion. Agree Mr.

Truman says--and most economists agree--a government should try to pay off its debts, or some of them, in a time of prosperity like the present one. That's why Mr. Truman is auk- ing for that $4 billion: To keep the country from going further into debt and to help pay off some of the present debt. But what about the Social Security and health insurance tax? The government can't use that money for paying its expenses or paying off debt. That money goes into a trust, or set-away, fund.

Right now employers and em- ployes are each paying one per oent of the payroll money: one per cent by the employer on his payroll, and one per cent by the employe on his pay, Mr. Truman wants this raised to per oent each. As for a tax for a health insurance program, top officials say this would bring in about $300,000,000 in new taxes the first year and would add another one- half of one per cent tax on payrolls.
