George Crane Pets Offer Children Some Tangible Evidence of Affection Donna 9, te an only child. "Dr. Crane," her worried mother began, "Donna keeps begging to have a puppy. But my husband is away a great deal, since he is a traveling salesman. "So I would probably be forced to cJean up after the dog and try to housebreak it.

Sooner or later I'd probably be the one to take it for a walk. So is it wise to try to have a puppy in a city home or apartment?" Parents, it is wise to give your children a pet. But you can accomplish maybe 50 per cent of that goal by offering the youngster a cloth monkey or dog or wooly lamb. The children will then impute human qualities to such a toy pet and also be far less fearful at bedtime if they can sleep with this stuffed creature. Our 5 Crane children, although close together in age, still had their own stuffed animals.

They took them to bed at night, too, and Mrs. Crane or I would often find 2 or 3 of these pets on the pillow beside Judy or the boys. But a live pet is also very helpful to the proper emotional growth of a youngster. The child who feels overlooked by busy parents, or who is shy and fearful that it isn't lav- Pear Abby 'Sheer' Evidence Is Produced ed, will blossom out when it has a puppy. For puppies show their affection.

They rush up and bark when the child gets home from school. They also wag their tails and thus inflate the ego of the youngster by visibly indicating their delight. And they don't scold a child for low marks or muddy clothes, fact, many of you wives might take a lesson from your child's puppy. When you were a new bride, you also rushed to the door when your husband returned from work and likewise showed your affection and happiness. Now you wives complacently stay in the kitchen when your husband reaches home.

"Dr. Crane," you defend yourselves, 'I am just in the middle of cooking dinner so I can't run away from the stove." Malarky. That's a 1 a alibi. But fathers, as well as mothers, also seem to think your child will automatically realize that you love it, even if you don't state that fact aloud. Beware! For children crave tangible evidences of affection.

Alvarez Book Reveals 'The Facts' to Youngsters 1 just read an excellent little paperback book which explains beautlfuly, and with great tact, to children 5-8 years old, where babies come from. It's called "A Doctor Talks to 5-8 Year- Olds," and was written by Dona A. Meilach, with the help of Dr. Elias Mandel. Mothers often write, a king me for such a booklet, and this one is the best I have seen.

In Writing it, the authors drew on their own vast professional experience one as a teacher and the other as a pediatrician. Also, they consulted parents of young children, teachers of mary school children, psychologists and physicians, to see what types of questions young children most often ask. The authors have tested the answers they have written, on hundreds of boys and girls and their parents and have found them acceptable and helpful. The book is beautifully illustrated with photographs and diagrams. For example, it shows the fetus growing in the mother's womb at 3, 6 and 9 months.

It starts out by saying, "Once you were smaller than a speck of dust that gets in your eye. You were even smaller than this dot." (there is a picture of a white dot on a black background). "When you were born you were so small your head could fit into your father's hand." With beautiful photographs and copies of famous paintings, the writers tell "the story of you," from the time when the egg and sperm meet and the egg begins to grow, to the birth of the baby. Although details are given, they are given in a fine and tactful way. My feeling is that it is permissible and advisable to answer truthfully the questions of children when they want to know the facts about the origin of life.

I do riot like the idea of answering them with evasions and lies. It is well for children to learn that their parents are honest and to learn the real facts. Many elderly women write asking what to do for bunions. They are strickly a disease of civilization. No barefoot person ever gets bunions.

Usually, these are formed when the woman is young and wears shoes that are so sharply point ed that they push the big toe far over toward the little toe. This makes a sharp angulation of the 3 bones that make up the big toe joint. When this sharp angle is pressed on by a shoe, there comes pain and inflammation in the joint. If I had bunions, I would go to a good orthopedic surgeon and have him straighten out my big toes. In view of the fact that a bunion can be cured by a little operation, there would seem to be no sense in a woman's hobbling about for years.

An occasional person writes asking me about myasthenia gravis, what it is, and how does one get it? "My" refers to muscle; means without, and "sthenos" Hence the which some muscles in a person's body lack strength. It is a disease in which there National Headquarters, 2 East makes certain muscles weak often in the face, around the eyes, in the voice box, the throat and the chest. The weakness tends to come and go. In some cases the symptoms are mild. The cause is not clearly known.

Sometimes a relative will "have trouble with the. thyroid gland, which suggests a possible connection. Some patients have a tumor of the thymus gland in the chest and in some cases it pays to have it removed surgically. Occasionally, the child of a woman with myasthenia gravis will, for a short time, have the disease; and then he recovers. There have been a few cases in which the disease might have been inherited, but usually a family history cannot be obtained.

It is good to get in touch with the myasthenia gravis foundation, where they give patients information about disease and they keep doing research on it. The address is: Myasthenia Gravis Foundation, 103rd New York 10, N. Y. 10029. A drug named Mestinon often helps the patients greatly.

The fact that it makes a patient stronger will confirm the doctor's hunch that the patient's disease is myasthenia. I hope that none of my readers will write to me asking for the medicine, because I cannot send it to them. It should only be prescribed by the person's specialist, under his direction. Dr. Alvarez explains how an attack of migraine headache is produced in his informal I booklet "Migraine or Sick Headaches."
