His grandfather, Charles Henry Manship was mayor of Jackson during the daysof theVicksburg campaign; his grandfather Charles Albert Brougher was Secretary of State for Mississippi during and after the Civil War. William Edward received the B.

Sc. degree from Mississippi State University in 1910 with highest honors in oratorv. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1911 and con-, tinued his career as an army officer until his retirement as a Brigadier General. He won distinction under Generals Mo-Arthur and Wainwright during the Philippine campaign of 1941-42. It was his troops who first battled the invading Japanese and were the last to surrender on Bataan, He was a prisoner of war three and one-half years in camps In Luzon, Taiwan, Kyushy, and Manchuria.

Mr. Brougher wrote poetry in prison camp under all kinds of conditions. He told the reactions of other prisoners to experiences endured, their philosophy and feelings. The poems published in the volume "Long Dark One is called "Oh Lord How Long?" which was inspired by an officer in prison who particularly despised the dirt; "Building Fences" reminded him of the joy the prisoners had to conceal when they learned that Americans had captured Manila. Later he wrote a book of short stories one of which recounts an experience concerning his poems written in prison.

(This story was printed in Reader's Digest and fourteen international editions of that magazine.) On this particular occasion the Japanese confiscated all books, papers, diaries, notebooks, belonging to the prisoners and terror and dread took over the camp. Baggy Pants, one of the Japanese lieutenant hatchet men, the personification of ruthless tyranny of the camp command, approached General tfrougher with his notebooks" and questioned the general about his poetry, saying that he had read it and liked it and had even memorized some, and that he particularly liked one that General Brougher had written describing the sunrise over the prison compound. Mrs. Brougher has given a rare collection of more than 800 items to the Mitchell Memorial Library at Mississippi State. This is a valuable collection giving the development of the I).
