Aniwer: Very few pension plans guarantee a worker's full pension to his or her surviving spouse. The most the law requires is that he or she will receive a surviving spouse's benefit equal to one-half of your reduced pension and then only if you die after age 55 and under certain circumstances. If you die after retirement, your spouse will receive the benefits only if at the time you retired, your pension benefit was reduced to provide a surviving spouse's benefit. The law provides that your pension be automatically reduced unless you sign a paper before retirement saying you do not want it reduced. If your plan has early retirement provisions and you keep working after age 55.
