D. "Dear Dr. Molner: Could you tell me something about an automatic water softener which was To the best of my knowledge, and the knowledge of some experts whom I have consulted on this matter, there is no health hazard from drinking "hard wa DEAR ABBY: My husband and I have lived in this epartmcnt for seven years and we have watched a little golden-haired girl grow up. She is now 18 but is childish in many ways although she is as developed physically as I am. I work odd hours at the hospital around the corner.

Many times I will come home and find this neighbor girl sleeping on our day-bed. She says she is afraid to By ABIGAIL VAN BUREN DEAR ABBY: On October 10, 1958 I sent a wedding gift to the daughter of a friend. I know this girl got the gift because her mother said she did. But z.t yet I have-n't received a thank-you note from the girl Her mother said a bride has a year in which to acknowledge her wedding gifts. Is that a fact? This girl had plenty of time before the wedding sit down and send out over 300 wedding invitations to people all over the country (she didn't know half of them) but she can't find time to thank them or the gifts.

What is my next move? MRS. L. DEAR MRS. L.i The next move is hers, not yours. The well-bred bride acknowledges her wedding gifts within thirty days after she returns from her honeymoon trip.

Let Nature Take Course DEAR ABBY: I wanted to send for your pamphlet on "HOW TO GET BOYS TO NOTICE' ME" but my father says too many boys notice me as it is. I am ten years old but sometimes I pass for twelve. Dear Abby, can you help me with my problem? I would like to have boys notice me. NOT NOTICED DEAR NOT: Girls your age have a lot of time in sleep alone. iir 4--.

1 I My husband is young, good-looking and only human. While I trust him and realize this girl is sweet but sim ple-minded, how long should my husband it doesn't look right but he kids me out of it. Please advise me. UPSET DEAR UPSET: Doesn't this "sweet but simple-minded 18-year-old child" have parents? Tell her in words of one syllable that your husband is not a baby-sitter for 18-year-olds and be sure your husband understands that YOU are NOT kidding! Doris Day and Jack Lcmmon co-star in a bright new comctfy "It Happened to Jane," also starring Ernie Kovacs. The film opens next week at the Capitol Theater.

THOROUGHLY enjoyable is "Destry Rides and I loved the choreography by Michael described to me as a water con- ditioner? It very important to me to know whether water is better for my famih I 1 i 4 than the wate from the faucet I am told that hard water with Dr. Mnlner its chemicals is harmful, that it causes hardening of the arteries and other ailments such as gall stones, kidney stones, etc. What is your advice? The one big purpose in water softeners (or "conditioners," which means the same thing) is to remove the "hardness" of the water. Calling a soflner a "con ditioner" has about as much meaning as calling a second-hand car a "used" car. It sounds nicer but that's all it means.

"Hard" water contains calcium or magnesium salts, which react with soap and cause a curd or scum which is commonly known as "bathtub ring." So, chemically, a softener sub stitutes two sodium molecules for each calcium or magnesium molecule, and the water becomes "soft." The sodium salts as opposed to the calcium or mag nesium salts do not react in the same way with the organic materials in soap, and you don't get that "bathtub ring." And, of course, the bathtub isn't the only place the poorly soluble residue will collect. The reason why soft water is better for washing your hair is that the residue rinses out more easily. IMPORTANT ITEM But the important thing is how the water behaves for washing THRU THE LOCKS on the PIPE DREAM Today Friday at 2:00 p.m. Thurtday of 7:30 9:30 p.m. Saturday at 7:30 9:30 p.m.

JUNGLE CRUISE Saturday afternoon at 2:00 Sundoy Morning at 10:00 a.m. rOOT OF MAIN IT. DAV. ter." Anyway, you don't eat uap, so you needn't worry about any "bathtub ring" in your stomach! As to your arteries, or.jrall or kidney stones, there' isn't any way in which "soft" or "hard" water would make the slightest differenca. So discard that from your consideration.

There is, so far as I ever have been able to learn, only ona health consideration involved. Since "softened" water is a mat ter of substituting sodium for either calcium or magnesium, softened water contains a considerable amount of sodium. Soma people say they think it gives a slightly salty taste. Others don't. mi DRIVE-IN THEATRE 2601 W.

He ruffed a small diamond with the ace of spades. He led the deuce of spades to dummy's nine, returned another diamond and ruffed with the queen of spades.

Now he led the four of spades to dummy's jack, returned dum my's last diamond and ruffed it with his last spade, the ten. He went to the board again with a small heart to the king and cashed the king of spades, picking up Mr. Abel's last trump.
