Tussey Mountain made AYP during the 2008-09 school year, which Shoemake said he believes is because of the "many initiatives we put into place last year, such as in- school tutoring, afterschool tutoring and 4Sight tests," which mimic state assessments. "They tell us how students are doing and SHOEMAKE show us where we need to focus our instruction," Shoemake said. "We looked at a lot of data from last year and saw significant gains, particularly in math." Shoemake said the school district plans to enhance in-school tutoring to include more 11th graders and continue to offer afterschool tutoring, as well as include the use of Study Island, an online learning platform, mto the seventh- and eighth-grade reading classes. "We tried Study Island for the first time last year and the kids were very receptive to it," Shoemake said.
