Right now, that is all you can do, but it is important not to abdicate your role out of frustration. It is true the blind dependence on ratings and the system of sponsor control are cold-blooded but the day will come when pay-TV and allied inventions are in effect, and it is good to remind the present czars that there is a vocal and informed audience ready to walk out on them the minute a solid alternative is available, unless it is given some respect Money talks. i 5 jTNi lass BW As A- -5 -i Tony Curtis Matures Rapidly Under Pressure UPI Facsimile WOUNDED KEARSARGE AT DOCK Gashed By Passenger Ship Oriana Navy Board Probing Carrier, Ship Mishap By RICK DU BROW HOLLYWOOD (UPI) I hope you will find time tn writp tn tho National Broadcasting New lore, N.Y., and tell the gentle-men there that life has been iiist one black day after another since iney cancelled "It's a Man's World." This will serve several purposes.

First, it will increase the efficiency of mail-opening secretaries as the Christmas rush nears; you can be sure NBC will appreciate this. Second, it may nelp give deserved Scrooge complexes to the handful of executives who summarily axed the very good new Monday night series on the basis of old and early ratings. Third, though resurrection of the show on NBC-TV is not likely, a continuing protest as big as the one thus far could help land it in syndication or perhaps even on another network. And fourth, maybe nothing will come of it ail-but "maybe" is always a good enough reason in itself to raise some cain. It's good for the soul.

NBC Gets Surprise The usual expectation at the networks is that there is always a furor when a respected pro gram is cancelled, but that it's soon forgotten and business is as usual. This time, however, NBC had a surprise. The protest has been such that the weekly show business newspaper, "Variety," published in New York, reported "nervousness" among "NBC brass." It added: "Various execs acted as if the heat was on from out-of-town crix (critics) to keep 'World' going and this made the web reluctant to concretize cancellation proceedings" though it finally did. As an indication of audience response, "Man's World" producer Peter Tewksbury wrote to this viewer that a single column in this space brought to NBC tn one day more than 200 letters, "plus 85 telegrams." This was just a start, of course. I suggest you keep writing.

Let those responsible know that you are there, and that you demand to be heard and reckoned with. For if you don't, these gentlemen, who make their decisions automatically on the basis of questionable figures worked out by someone else, will have even less con HOLLYWOOD (UPI) Tony Curtis bounced back to Hollywood after three months abroad with an astonishing number of changes in his life. During his absence, Tony: Was divorced by his wife, Janet Leigh. -Appeared briefly in two mo vies. Received news that Janet had remarried.

Broke gossip records for his dates with Christine Kaufmann. Soothed his jumpy nerves. Plugged his latest picture, "Taras Bulba." Matured, and with many more gray hairs at his temples, Curtis propped his feet on a table in flossy Revue Studios office and reckoned as how his junket to Gerrcuvy, France, Switzerland, England, Spain and Italy was well worth all the excitement. "I was pretty shook up when I left here for Europe," he said, referring to his separation from Janet. "But everything worked out for the best.

Takes Bit Parts "It's a good thing I came back when I did. I was becoming King of the Cameo role over there. Just for the heck of it I played bit parts in 'The List of Adrian Messenger' and 'Paris When It "I'm probably the only star who 'is trying to crash in as an extra. I have no idea what I'll be paid for those parts, but it was fun doing them." Curtis and his friend Miss Kaufmann will costar soon in his KP1X-TV 5 LOS ANGELES (UPI) Fed eral mediators hoped to resume talks this week between Lockheed Aircraft and the International Association of Machinists (IAM) following President Ken nedy's move Monday to prevent renewal of a strike. A 10-day restraining order was issued Monday pending outcome of a federal government request for an 80-day injunction.

Acting after Kennedy invoked the Taft-Hartley law in the dispute, Atty. Gen. Robert F. Kennedy filed a complaint In U.S. District Court here seeking an immediate federal injunction against continuation of the strike.

Federal Judge Jesse W. Curtis set Dec. 10 for the hearing on the complaint. Work Toward Talks Mediation officials worked to ward resumption of talks Wednesday in the dispute which has centered around the IAM's demand for a union shop. In making the ruling, Curtis said, "This court finds that a strike exists which, if allowed to continue, will substantially affect the aerospace and ballistic mis sile industry and permit jeop ardy to the national health and safety." A union attorney argued against the order saying the IAM already had complied with the purpose of the Taft-Hartley law postponing the strike twice before.

Alfred Klein said the cooling off period, the object of the law, already totaled 129 days. Seek Employe-Vole Company attorney Robert Can- an supported the order, noting that if no agreement on a new contract is reached within 60 days employes must vote on the firm's last offer. Lockheed has urged such a vote many times. The IAM went out on strike at midnight last Tuesday and picketed Lockheed's missiles and space division and Lockheed-Cal ifornia Co. installations for two days.

They returned to work late Thursday at the request of the Federal Mediation and Concilia tion Service after President Ken nedy appointed a three-man board of inquiry. The board called the temporary voluntary truce precarious and said the union security issue had not been settled. Day and Contract you might ask NBC why it did so little to publicize "It's a Man's World" a situation so infuriating to those involved that a girl in the cast, Jan Norris, volunteered money of her own for the pur pose.

I think I know the answer: I am convinced some of the powers with fancy titles really don't understand it and so wrote it off. Why don't you explain to the poor fellows it's all about real people, like those in the audience they've lost contact with? next picture, "Monsieur Cognac, which will be produced for his company, as was "40 Pounds of Trouble" due for release soon Unlike many stars who form their own companies, Curtis does not interfere with the men he hires to produce and direct, "My only contribution to our pictures is my performance," he said. "There is no reason why I should get involved in matters that people like Stan Margulies my producer, knows more about than I do. No Illusions "I have no illusions about becoming a billionaire producer myself. There is just as much money to bf made by sticking to acting." Why, then, has the handsome character gone to all the trouble to build his young empire.

"Because it's the only way to find parts that are tailored for me," he answered. "The great directors like Wilder, Stevens, Zin-neman and Blake Edwards only make one picture a year and they may not necessarily have a part for me. "As the head of a company I can read my own material and go by my own instincts as an actor. Then when something comes along that I like I am in a position to go ahead and make it." Curtis is rolling up his sleeves for a long session of hard work without the emotional problems he had six months ago. "My personal troubles are all cleared up now," he grinned.

The two famous ships the U.S. aircraft carrier Kearsarge and the British luxury liner Oriana rammed into each other in fog off the Long Beach break water, but there were no injuries to the estimated 4,000 persons aboard the two vessels. Clifford Edgecombe, said late Monday the 0 Orient Line cruise ship would be de layed until Wednesday. It origin ally was scheduled to depart for Honolulu Monday. The Kearsarge, which picked up astronaut Wally Schirra in the Pacific after his six-orbit flight Oct. 3, was involved in a minor collision with a Navy tanker later in October while refueling at sea off San Diego, Calif. The carrier, which normally carries a complement of 2,500 of ficers and men, was on its way to San Diego to pickup carrier aircraft and personnel before de parting on a training mission.

The Oriana, carrying 1,128 passengers and a crew of 900, had planned to dock only a few hours. A hole 10 by 25 feet was gouged in the starboard bow of the ton carrier. The forecastle also suffered structural damage and there was a possibility the starboard catapult was knocked askew. The ton liner, second largest in the Pacific and holder of several passenger and speed records, had a 16-foot gash in her bow. Above Water Damage All the damage to both ships was above the water line and both continued into port under own power.
