C2 SUNDAY, JUNE 7,1998 OUTDOORS KOKOMO TRIBUNE Indiana offers chance to fish for free Unexpect release of silt caused fish to die in Fawn River. hey say there is no such thing as a free lunch. Yet, on June 13 and 14 there will be if you're willing to fish for it. Indiana will offer a free fishing weekend at this time where adults will not need a license to fish on pub- -lic waters. Children under the age of 17 do not need a license at any time.

However all other rules and regulations still apply. DNR Director Larry Macklin hopes Hoosiers will use the weekend to discover the relaxation and excitement the sport provides while developing an appreciation for our lakes and rivers and the wildlife that live in and around them. Fishing is an enjoyable and important pastime no matter what age a person is. This free weekend is a great occasion for families and friends to try fishing without having to purchase a license. It is also a perfect time for experienced anglers to introduce a newcomer to the sport.

In celebration of the free weekend many Indiana locations are offering exciting special events such fishing clinics, derbies and cooking classes. The minor fish kill happened downstream from the state operated Fawn River Fish Hatchery. The mishap occurred as technicians released water from the historic hatchery's water supply pond into Fawn River to perform maintenance on intake and water control structures.

The draining process released a large amount of silt that had accumulated in the supply pond over the years. Although silt and sediment are a This free weekend is a great occasion for families and friends to try fishing natural part of any river system, the high concentration was damaging to fish populations for a short distance downstream. The silt discolored water killing about 100 fish. No chemicals or other products were discharged in the mishap. Technicians at the facility closed water control gates and halted maintenance as soon as they noticed a problem.

The release of silt was immediately reported to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the DNR's Law Enforcement Division which is standard procedure whenever any fish kill occurs. The DNR will use information from the investigation to determine how to best restore the affected portion of the stream. Built more than 60 years ago, Fawn River Fish Hatchery is one of the oldest in the state.
