August 5 1SG. The Great Victory in Alabama. The victory won by the democrats in Alabama is one wider than party significance anti brings Joy to the hearts not of democrats alone but to all lovers of their kind and their country. The pleasant feature or the election is that the tens of thousands of stal- wart men who had strayed into the ranks or populism have returned to their places and enabled the freemen of Alabama to roll up a majority of about 40000. Against this wholesale return or populists to the house or their fathers which was something only to be expected from brave and honorable men there stands the conduct of the mere machine which sought to uphold for the mere offices it could control.

This political machine representing a party advocating the free coinage of silver wedded to extreme democratic doctrines on almost every line. went into open barter with the republi- can party and sought to deliver the white men of Alabama over to the black domination from which they escaped in 1874. These allies to whom the populist leaders of the state sought to deliver the votes or their followers are the advocates the gold standard and of every other policy which the platform or populism as well as the platform of democracy denounces as unpatriotic and dishonest. It is to the credit of the of Alabama that they refused to be delivered in this unholy trade and it is an evidence of a state of affairs which we shall see frequently illustrated during the campaign ahead of us. In one or two other states men prominent in populist counsels with a view solely to the spoils or oilier fur the sake of a few dollars in official salaries have aligned themselves with the republican patty.

wish represents the very antipodes of all that is called fur by populism. Such a condition of affairs is so dishonest that it cannot car ry with it even those followers who have. verged on fanaticism. The rank and file of the populists will smash every such deal. The people of Alabama regardless or party lines are to be congratulated upon the way in which they have indorsed correct principles and rolled up such a magnificent vote fur toveruor Joseph F.

Johnston. Underneath the Pacific. Though a submarine cable underneath the Atlantic ocean has lung been in practical operation science has not as yet performed that difficult feat with reference to the wider and deeper waters or the Pacific. But little over a quarter of a century ago the North American continent lie- gan to flirt with Europe over the At lantle cable. The messages whit tints I crossed and reerosed between the two hemispheres buzzM a distance of 715 miles.

Since the achievement of that toaster stroke of genius was consummated in 1869 repeated enterprises' have been formed for the purpose of spannins the Pacific ocean. Nothing however has yet been accomplished. Nevertheless within the lust two years the hope of realizing this long cherished dream has commenced to revive. wt year the Pacific Cable Company was organized la New York city white the British Colonial Telegraph Company has sprung into existence within the lat few months. The former proposes to lay a table direct to Yokota- ma Japan by wayof the Sandwich islands the estimated cost or which Is somewhere in the neighborhood of $10000,000 The British company is lijrur- lug on a cable from Vancouver's island to Melbourne by he way of the FIJI One reason why it is more difficult to lay a cable across they Pacific ocean than across the Atlantic is due to the much greater depth or I the former.

The Atlantic ocean ranges In depth from 12000 to ir 00 feet. whilethat of the. Pacific is- from 18000 to 24000 feet. Some tiny. however the difficult feat will tie achieved.

Mighty indeed are the miracles which science performs. Misplaced Boosters. With a flourish of trumpets and a long profession of roosters adorning its front page. The Montgomery Advertiser announces the result of the state election in Alabama and declares that John stun has swept the Held by 40000 majority. From the manner In which The Advertiser exults over Johnston's election it would seem ns that paper hid not only managed hi political campaign lint had shaped the result in that state by its own wise editorial policy.

Though loud in its praise of Johnston The Ad. vertisers doxology is somewhat misleading. Its no sense whatever Is The Advertiser responsible for the result which it celebrates. Ulfuiug to accept the platform adopted by the Chicago convention it has waged a persistent warfare against the democratic ticket and sought to bring reproach upon the views entertained by the great majority of democrats In the United States. Though nominally supporting the state ticket it never lot an opportunity to go as far as it dared in throwing ob Mat in the way of its success.

Opposing the national democratic tkket it could hardly bring much support to the state ticket which involved the same fundamental principles. In stead or aiding in the fight therefore which has just closed in such a glorious triumph for democracy. The Advertiser has done nothing more during the campaign than to sound the note of discord and division. Taking this view or the matter It looks very much as if The Advertiser was eating at some one else's feast. At any rate the democratic roosters which present such a game appearance on The Advertisers trout page do not look exactly as if they were crowing on the right fence.

Mercenary Republican Tactics. Though boodle has always played a conspicuous part in republican campaigns there has never been a time in the history of American politics when the party organization has had a greater supply of mercenary logic on hand than in the present campaign. With that spurious sort or patriotism which men display when their selfish interests are at stake and which in the present case is heartily indorsed by the organs of the money power as a personal sacrifice for the good of the party a syndicate of New York millionaires has recently been organized for the purpose of buying up enough votes to place that state in the republican cot- units next November. As It by intuition the masses of the people recognize the fact that but little in common exists between theta and the money power. The very insistence therefore with which the organs of the money power urge the perpetuation of tie single gold standard is sufficient in Itself to arouse the most serious apprehensions or the people and can be accepted by them as nothing less thnn' virtual challenge from the money power.

If there existed any doubt as to the ultimate relations existing between the single gold standard and the money power that doubt should he immediately dispelled by a glance at some or the names on the- so-called roll of honor made up or these patriotic New York millionaires. The New York Journal publishes a list or these suffering citizens together with the immense fortunes which they control. A partial enumeration of the tattle is as follows John Rockefeller 12T 000000 Cornelius Vanderbilt. 100000000 C. P.

Hunting- ton 00000000 Pierpont Morgan. 2o. 000000 Joseph Milbank. 204Xt000 Andrew Carnegie 20000000 William I tIotne 1. 100000 David Sloane.

Bliss J4rtl0000 Besides these' there ate. six others whose fortunes range from' 000000 to 4500000. Most of these millionaires are engaged in banking awl manufacture. Some are interested in railroads and others in general merchandise but all of them represent large individual and corporate interests. Such alleged patriotism though it appears to fine advantage through the purifying adjectives of a partisan press can hardly stand the scrutiny or a more rigid though perhaps a less partial in vestlgation These few general figures however.

do by any means complete the story. Not only has the republican party in Now York state a fabulous sum of money at its command but already it has commenced to dispose' of it in plentiful measure. Speakers for the campaign have been secured at prices which have never been equaled heretofore. Humor has it that Colonel John R. Pel- olws a disaffected sound money" democrat has been offered the sum of $23.000 to take the stump in New York state for MtKinley while a much larger consideration has been offered Bourke Cochran.

But what does all this extravagance. mean Nothing more or-less than a determination on the part of the New York republicans to carry the state this fall It there is any virtue in boodle. Realizing that nothing can be. gained by a. fair and open campaign conducted.

on strictly educational principles they vTv 7 proposEtotesthe purchastngpow0rof money Though money' they have. jhadsome influence La. former campaigns Its see charm will be missed when the presidential vote la counted this tall. Honest men are never in tI market and even those who have been so mercenary heretofore as to part with their convictions for a valuable consideration will be extremely cautious about doing so now when they are asked. to sell their liberty.

To a man whose pockets have been robbed' by the single. gold standard the sum of iO or 100. offered to him in exchange for his vote Is hut a paltry consideration. What the American people need and what they intend to have in spite of republican boodle is. a change in the.

financial policy of the government Such a change will insure better times for the. masses and while the latter may he in possession or the nations wealth the former constitute by far a majority of the people. Such disgraceful tactics cannot possibly succeed. When money Is so freely expended it implies that logic is deficient. Unable to realize anything from argument they fall back upon the supposed omnipotence of boodle.

In doing this however they Insult the great hotly or the American people and against such an outrage they will enter their protest in November. Li Hung Chang Abroad. Despite the fact that great arid unwieldy China was so utterly routed by her progressive Island neighbor a short time no her most potential representative commands the respect of Europe. Li Hung Ohang the Chinese ambassador extraordinary has been made much or in Russia Germany and France and stow the preparations. for his reception ins England are occupying the attention of Queen Victoria.

She has secured for hits domicile the splendid mansion or Lord Lonsdale on Charlton house terrace in London. An elaborate series or entertainments and royal events has been arranged in his honor. This course hiss been criticised by the' English press and many unfavorable stories are told or the Chinese statesman and his party. Vanity Fair warns its read. en against the members of the suite saying that the bulk of them area low class or men who would not dare to enter an English or American merchants private reception room sit Shanghai.

Perhaps this is because the English nation once before entertained an eastern potentate the shah of Persia. and his table manners disgusted the public while his household arrangements attracted the attention or the sanitary authorities. This man was given a magnificent palace such a one as has been assigned to the Chinese ambassador. On the parlor floor he had all the meat that was used by the family killed in his presence which did not improve the appearance of the furnishings nor was it conducive to good health in the vicinity. It is not likely that cur scenes will be repeated with Li Hung Cluing.

He has conducted himself with propriety during the entire tour but he lias lilt the same. When In vited to dinner lie eats from his own cuisine before going to the table or his host. anti there only makes a pretense of dining lie explains this by saying that lie is too old to enjoy a change of habits and he does not wish to make a face at everything that does not suit hint. The great Bismarck entertained Li Hung Chang and the saute course was followed at his table by the oriental and when the prince asked him how he could judge that the German cuisine was not good before trying it. he replied by the question Would you.

The Constitution is in receipt of a letter from a valued correspondent in Spring Place to which the question is asked As the Cotton States and International exposition was got up for the purpose of. building up trade with the countries south of us what has been done to get the full benefit of that exposition Our correspondent asks a very perplexing and reaching question. The Cotton States andItnternational exposition was perfect in its character and it gave an excellent display of American manufactures and possibilities. In turn representatives were present from. sanity of the Central American and South American governments to take note or what was on exhibition.

These gentle- men upon return to their. respective countries gave reports highly favorable. It will thus be seen that. the people of our country have done their foil duty in making a comprehensive exhibition of all that we have and in inviting our southern neighbors to be present The Spanish-American peoples south of us evinced their interest in our work In their readiness to take part in it by sending their representatives as stated and by making the favorable reports which they kive. But in spite of the good Intentions north and south the exposition remains a practical failureso far as results in the development" or South.

American trade are concerned and the cause it ti The people tie South American conn tries avjs the silver standard TIIC1r dollar is ibehornial dollar otcommerce our dollar is the appreciated dollar of the goldbugs a. dollar to extort from debtors and not a dollar to- pay credit ors. The result Is that the condition of exchange is against us and must act as a tariff as fatal as a prohibitory tariff enforced against Inter-American commerce. The same England which has controlled all American finances through. Wall street has complete.

con. trol of the South American carrying trade and that control Is exercised to divert commerce from the United States to England. England buys in gold and sells in sliver timid thus accommodates herself to the conditions in' South America whilst the United States is controlled and hemmed in by our English allies. The success or the movement for the free and unlimited coinage of sliver means much more titan a financial declaration of Independence from Great Britain. Great as that.

single accomplishment would be a still greater one stands behind it and that is that it would break the domination of England over the commerce of the South Amen- can states which naturally and rightfully belong to us. In fact there is hardly a line which the intelligent mind can pursue in which the reaching consequences or the gold standard are not to he seen. It is the dry rot of commerce it is the sign by which we may know that the productive energy or a country has been destroyed and that its citizens have become the mere interest payers of a foreign landlord who demands his pennyweight of gold. Remove the gold standard and set loose the wheels of commerce and our country will bloom again as it. has never before.

Energy and development will be worth more in a mans pocket than time chink of a gold dollar. But preserve the gold standard and there wm be but one successful business in the country that of the money lender with the rest or the people borrowers in order to pay the exorbitant charges of the usurer. Two Notable Men. Amid the smoke and conflict of the political battle in Alabama two notable figures deserve attention. The first is the standard bearer or democracy Captain Joseph F.

Johnston who has won for his party and his people such a great triumph. In the dark days when the party was controlled by men who had forgotten its principles Captain Johnston held his place and organized for victory holding aloft the standard of true democracy under whose folds lie invited all honest men of Alabama to align themselves. lie inaugurated that. fight within the ranks of the party which won the convention at Montgomery and set the pace for the democracy or the union the culmination of which was witnessed In the great triumphs at Chicago. Paying attention to the details of the local canvass he not only brought the masses back into the home of their fathers during the Jnltla- tory campaign hut after the convention was held he ralliedthem to make their presence felt on the 3d or August and that presence is best seen in the magnificent victory which was rolled up for democracy and for Johnston.

The second figure to which we would' call attention is that of Chairman John B. Knox. Mr. Knox was a gold standard man but never for an instant did hl' permit himself to beled in opposition to the will of the people. So fair was his canvass during the campaign before the state convention that although the sliver men held control of it by a vote or three to one.

they re tamed Chairman Knox at the head of the party councils. In his conduct of the campaign which has so gloriously ended he has shown Isis party loyalty in it manner which it would be well for others to imitate. All hail to these two high' and notable citizens of Alabama. They nave won time first victory in the series of battles or 1800. which is bound to culuil- nate in the triumph of democracy on the or November.
