cultyiibout obtaining credit. When the coin is rbereyouaro considered to own something. In the last analysis you must come to coin as a some- uoney basis. The fabric must rest upon hing solid not mere promises to pay. Another grand injustice connected with this hcuie of issuing money on perishable products lea in the taxatiou that it necessarily requires to naugnrate the loaning of government money on bet oats cum wttonIUid tobacco.

The paper currency must be all endorsed by the vexing wer of the United states to make it worth more ban the bare paper on which it printed. The taxpayers of the whole country must endorse it or It wouldn't pass at all. When you become the so- unty on a note you have gamed your consent to ay that note if the maker rrom any reawn falls lo It. When congress orders money to be issued at 1 per cent on the I articles named it means that taxation to the amount of the issue it also ordered. A pretty piece of business it would be to tax me merely to loan the money at 1 per cent year to my next-door neighbor Maybe his farm is worth aIsnndred times more than soy little home and Chest of carpenter tools but ha can borrow money at the minimum while I cant borrow any at all and yet I mutt be made to pay that he nay spend To inflate him I must lie further depleted.

It is urged that gold burs and silver kings are already favored. To the same extent the man wIJo bought a piece of land at I per sere and discovered ass oil welt a gold sliver or manganese mine on it. is favored. They are to possession and the world comes to buy. tape line un be placed on luck.

I Stove no patience with extortion. no word of cheer for legislation that demonetized the silver dollar too set up a gold idol but the fort remains that coin is toe beets of genuine money. and no doubt it will remain in that i poilition until Gabriel lows his trumpet. When General Washineton was president the revolutionary warended the republic established and the government in a position to borrow money why did he send to Holland to bog a loan of millions of forms Why didn't he put the presses to work to print rather than. as he did es tabllJib a mint to stamp tile gold and silver that the debt ought be paid Because he could borrow all the florins he needed when he could show gold and silver in the treasury and tb authorities in Holland were willing to take the risk or com.

when they nwUhlng to risk a all. paper currency. trance paid a billion of specie to Germany as ax indemnity fund. The people of Trance paid it. The government bought their gold and silver and made them sale in promises to pay.

They paid 83 per cent for French bonds and receive per rent interest. Nothing on earth but gold and silver could have stood the strain. The people of France are the very factors who advanced the cash. Therefore. there can be no repudiation or wildcat issues.

Let history teach us to protect our own redlt. All retlers of Macaulay are familiar with the notorious Land Bunk that lie has immortalized as the' mammoth swindle of the age. Twelve hundred thousand pounds sterling borrowed Iron the government the land used II security. John Laws noted venture was based on land II security is found in the year 1714 when he began to agitate in his famous book Mouey and Trade Considered' lie went on inflaming the public mind until in 1714 his bank hail issued twenty billion of notes. Then the crash came A fey made gigantic fortunes tbe thousands suffered.

Inflation is the shadow without the substance. An inflated currency is the robber scheme to get something for nothing. It fosters unhealthy speculation. It betrays confidence. The last nun in possession never falls to get hurt.

When the bill stops the loss certain. A we dollar is the dollar that is worth as muc1 at any other dollar. That is the dollar we all desire to fin ilia our own pocket no matter how convenient It may be to have a cheap dollar to put in somebody else pocket. Inflation stands for risk danger. and a strain to credit.

R. A. F. North Georgia December 25 JO Salvini. The appearance of Mr.

Alexander Snlrini at DeGives opera house on Friday evening marks for our theater goers a new departure in stage work in that the actors engagement will be con. fined entirely to romantic plays two of which at least have fallen into desuetude not so much from lack of good merit as from the lack of interpreters. In his younger days Edwin Booth was a very tine romantic actor but now lie devotes his time to tragedy entirely. Charles Feebler Edwin Adans anti E. L.

Davenport were One romantic actors. but these three have wed and for nearly a generation our stage whit numbering many drxmatic artists in other lines has been almost barren of actors capable of infusing life arid vitality into tlioae grand old drama which have done SO much to wake the stags at tractree. At the present time no actor hat a bet. ter foothold in this line than Alexander Salylni who by reason of his youth. his force his natural endowments can do the work required of a romantic actor.

Other and lesser lights have struggled to attain a recognized position II exponents of these charming creations on the dramatists brains such as IVArugnan Don Cesar and similar parts but roost or all failed to achieve permanent success. Alexander Sav1n1 born in an atmosphere of art bred in the country of acting and the home of one of the greatest artists living his own father should be worthy to wear the mantle of the great On of romantic drama who have lived and flourished in the past. Atlanta's population is foil 90001 Mr. if. O. Sannder secretary the Chamber of Commerce is authority for tie statement fie makes it in the new directory which is Just completed and in his introduction to that volume he gives to the pubLc some interesting information. The directory will be ready for distribution on Thursday the first day of new year.

Ii will be a New Years present which win be highly appreciated by business men and all thers who have use for a directory fora good. directory i indispensable to everyjoffloe In his introduction to his new volume Mr. Saunders has a word to say on subjects other than that of the city's population. His reference tp the rapid growth of the city is based pon tbe most substantial evidence attainable and is valuable information. Then his refer- ence to street numbering read U.

Here is the introduction to the new volume ThuJti to the rapid and excellent work of Tsiz CoXSTITUTIOJe Job office we are enabled to issue the Atlanta city directory for 1891 promptly on the first bf the year. The book has been paining in bulk. for severaV rears past and in order to keep it from bsesselfig tnwieldy the matter contained has been con densed not abridged as much a possible. It Is printed on a much lighter and doer grads of paper which somtwhit reduces the size of the volume enabling it to be ninth more readily handled. If tile names increase year in the taine ratio as they have in the past and they undoubtedly wl the next edition of the work 1832 rill be printed in double-column brevier type mIlar i 0 the directories of the largerritles of the untry.

The United States census taken June 1st gave Atlanta it population in round figures of 65000. but the directory canvass made by careful and experienced men and taken five months later shows the population at this time to be 84640 within the city limits. Add to this the suburban Inhabitants and we find a total of considerably over 90000. It was noticed that during the canvass the enumerators found a smaller proportion of vacant houses than usual despite the fact that nearly 2000 new building were erected during the year. Yet when even these were visited later the greater number were found occupied and in most ustances by recent corners.

Nearly 900 new famlUes were found to have located hers daring November and December quite a large proportion of whom bore foreign particularly Uerman names. This is significant as heretofore The Atlanta Directory has shown a smaller proportion of foreign names than any other American city of tsslze. There are of course errors and omissions in this volume although it la thought they have beet reduced to a minimum but it must be borne in mind that the information contained Is obtained From nearly as many persons as there are names 11 it and that it is barely possible that some one other than the publisher is responsible lor such rrors or omissions. This will be more easily believed when it la stated that 75864 calls were made and over 500000 questions asked and answered during the enumeration and 13690 calls were de to verify information after the regular canvass was completed. The percentage ofchange in the directory in the year is 801 and to many it will seem almost incredible that in every hundred names in the 1850 directory only twenty remain unchanged yet it is true.

We desire to call attention to the fact that we have us tile in our office in the Chainl er of Commerce building a complete directory library. It is maintained at a considerable expense and is designed for the free use of the public. Either the existence of his library is not known or else At. lantas business community is different from other cities as the books are very seldom referred to and then chiefly by traveling men from other places la other cities these directory files are constantly used and there seems to be no reason why Atlanta should be an exception. and we hope that this reminder will save much correspondence with other cities Lot information which can be obtained from these directories without expense or loss of time.

This bill was passed by the last legislature in pursuance of an amendment to the state constitution which was ratified by a vote of the people last October. 4 Tile provisions of the bill are In brief that each and every widow of a soldier who served in the confederate armies during the late war and who becarnethe wife of the soldier either before or during tOe war shall lie alpwed a yearly pension of lou from the state. The law does not apply to widows of veterans who were married after the close of the war. There was an attempt made to amend the bill by providing that any widow owning property to the amount of 2000. or over should he debarred the benefits or the act.

hut this was defeated. The ordinary's office has been thronged by widows of veterans for sometime alt seeking infor mation regarding the law. Yesterday Governor then who is still to his room was asked about the manner in which the money will be disbursed and he replied that he had not formulated a. plan as yet. It la altogether probable however that the fund will be disbursed in a similar manner to the pensions of disabled veterans.

Blank will be fur. olshed each applicant who will apply to the court of ordinary and after having substantiated her claim will be given the proper certificate which will entitle her to receive the pension on presentation to the proper state offi dais. While Governor then has not taken any ac Ion in the matter this is the probable plan. Always a Fit Mr. H.

Orion France the well-known sculptor. The bust will fittingly adorn their handsome nbrooms sod perpetuate the memory 01 one of their most prominent members. Mr. Fracas hl not yet commenced work on it but expects to begin in the next few weeks. It will be a striking resemblance of Atlanta's distinguished son.

It will be a duplicate of the plaster cast which Mr. Frazee now has in hi studio. made from his last recollections of Mr. Urady sided by the best portraits and photographs obtainable. The clay mould was originally intended to be used in making a bust of the late Jefferson Davis.

whose death mask Mr. Fracas was commissioned to make by THE CONSTITUTION but at the 001101. tation of many who waited his bust finished first Mr. France remodeled it and used it fur the bust of JlrGrady The last time Yr Fraz saw Yr Grady was while they were discussinc the advisability of having a death mask made of Mr. Davis.

Yesterday morning there appeared in Tint COXSTITUTIOS a three-line local noticing the extremeness of the Lilly Clay paper.
