The work" of tearing down the old court hcu commenced on the second Tuesday ix February list. The corner stone of the new building was laid May 16th with appropriate ceremonies and a speech by Colonel Joel Abbot Bumps On th ret of February 1887 the new building will be completed and superior court will be held there on the third Mondaj in April. It is a handsome building put up with a great deal of style at a cost or 22500. The old courthouse was built. In 1819 by Pleasant RobiDson and cost 14000.

There was but little limo used in its construction as this material had to be carted from Philadelphia It served its purpose well and stood a faithful servant and sentinel sixty-seven years. It was found when the walls were torn down however that the chimney had worn and tin timbers were charred. In lact the old courthouse had been on fire unknown outside several times. The old courthouse was classic ground. It was the central point where tin titans from middle and north Georgia met and measured swords.

The north Georgia bat never went lower down than Lexington. The middle Georgia lawyers did not come any higher up. Hence the Cobbs Lnrnpkins Stephens Gilmer Hill Toombs Hillyer Cone Dawson and Johnson disputed tliu ground at every term of the court or in very political campaign. There were seven sons of old John Lumpkin who was foreman of the first grand jury in the county. He was the trreat-trrandfathfir of the present judge of the superior court Hon.

Samuel Luntpkln. or three sons. Wilson Lumpkin was governor and senator J. H. Lumpkin was chief justice George Lumpkln was a.

Baptist preacher. Jack Lumpkin was also a Baptist preacher. hop Lumpkin was a physician of wide reputation. Samuel Lumpkin was a. farmer and grandfather of the.

pre ent judge. Torn was a lawyer end One such roan would have distinguished a state but seven in one county had an effect hardly imagined. Joseph E. Lompkin of Some was from Oglethorpe. He went to congress from the mountains and ran for governor when the deadlock resulted between himself and James T.

Gardner and' Joseph E. Brown was brought in. There was Joseph H. Lumpkin who defended Platt in Augusta for tilling a United States officer. He fainted in the courthouse after speaking and wax threatened with bilious fever.

His physician mended a trip to Europe and while he was away he was elected chief justice of Georgia. One of the most famous revivals in the county was in 1835 which was started by the famous preacher Jack Lumpkin. It was here that Judge Andrews on the bench admitted that no white man could be hung on the northern circuit. Mr. Stephens seldom appeared for the prosecution in any case.

The last time ho prosecuted a criminal in Oglethorpe WaJ against a negro who had committed murder. Thomas Cobb was for the defense hut Stephens pronounced a conviction. The negro was sentenced to be hung. He dug under the jail however sad afterward escaped. There was a murder ease in Oglethorpe in which the accused' got off from failure of the court to procure a Every.

man in the county had formed and expressed some opinion. There was nolawjfor the change of venue to another county and the prisoner went free. A very heinous offense also went unprosecuted because there was no law 'applicable on the books. Then there was the Riser. hartcase and the DuPree will cue engaging the best talent in the circuit and thestat Oglethorpe furnished two United States sen ators for Georgia.

at the same time Win. Crawford and Thomas IV Cobb were colleagues' in the senate both from Oglethorpe. But- for. aslrokeof raralvsis in 1824. Crawford would have been president or the United States.

The younger Adams was nominated by the demo- crate and it was charged that Clay sold out to Adams for the state portfolio Crawford would have been the' democratic nominee as Mr. Stephens always said but for his illness. Governor GUmer was succeeded in the executive chair by Qotanor LumpHa both from Oglethorpe. tSIYU8 FOISTS Oglethorpe county produces 17003 bales of cotton annually or about one balatoeyery person within its limits. In 188 there were 1570 farms in Oglethorpe" valued at 1315257 the products of which were worth 791837.
