Pensacola News Journal Thursday, June 22, 1989 av ONLY PHS students mourn for Lowery Robinson Ex-lawmaker's daughter dies in car wreck I Mailbox I fffijp i) tiVt; ik niilm sX lj By Cindy West News Journal Friends of Lowrey Elizabeth Robinson remembered good times on Wednesday while at the same time mourning her death. Miss Robinson, 15, was killed Tuesday in a one-car accident on Interstate 65 near Greenville, Ala. The driver of the car, her grand- mother, Betty P. Lowrey, 67, of Centreville, was treated for minor injuries. Mary Agner and Kelly Bennett enjoyed having fun with Miss Robinson.

"No one really said anything, we just cried for a while at first," said Tabbatha McGhee, 14. "But then we got our spirits up by thinking about old times and going to class with her." McGhee, 14, said she had known Miss Robinson since seventh grade when they attended Workman Middle School.

She recalled once when they had to dissect a frog. "Both of us didn't know what to do," she said. "I ended up cutting its gall bladder in half, and Lowrey just looked at it and said, Lowrey and Kelly Bennett, 15, became friends last year when a teacher told them they needed a partner for English class and the partner had to be someone they didn't know. "She sat diagonally in front of me, turned around and said, i don't know you and I want you to be my partner for Bennett said. Her father remembered the day his daughter was born April 1, 1974.

Her birth was headlined in the St. Petersburg Times and Atlanta Constitution after Robinson was given permission from the speaker of the house to miss the opening day of the legislative session that year. "I felt kind of bad because Sandra did all the work and I got my picture in the story," Robinson said. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 tonight at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.

"We finished that one i line and the dogs in the neighbor- hood started howling. It was so funny we fell over in the grass." Lowrey Robinson was the daughter of former Florida Rep. Grover Robinson III, D-Pensacola, and his wife, Sandra. Grover Robinson III served in the legislature from 1972-86. Seven of Miss Robinson's friends gathered at Pensacola High School on Wednesday to talk about their friend.

All of the students, including Miss Robinson, are in the International Baccalaureate Program at PHS. The program allows students to earn college credit while in high school. Sheriffs Lt. Floyd Rose says the decision was made not to save money, but to make better use of scarce manpower. Only two of the department's seven motorcycle units, which provide the escorts, regularly work Sundays. The decision two weeks ago to eliminate Sunday escorts frees them for traffic duty on Pensacola Beach.

The city of Pensacola does not escort funerals on Sunday either, Rose says. The Sheriffs Department escorts an average of four to eight funerals a day, Rose says. Wednesday there were none, he says, but some days there might be 10. "It's an old southern tradition that I believe in," he says. "We do it out of respect to the family of the deceased." Also, he says, without it traffic lights, stop signs and other traffic would break up the procession.

Most cemeteries are closed on Sundays, meaning Sunday funerals are scarce, funeral home spokesmen say. "We've only had three or four in the last year," says Sam Shiver of Rogers Northview Funeral Home. "Most of those are in the north end of the county at churches there." He says Sunday funerals usually are dismissed at the church or funeral home, and mourners are given 30 minutes to get to the cemetery. Unescorted processions can't pass through red lights like escorted processions can. "We don't break any laws," Shiver says.

"They'll write you up." Gladys Morris of Joe Morris Son Funeral Home says "we'll just have to do without (escorts) if they won't give you one." She says Sunday funerals used to be a tradition in the black community. But that ended in the late 1950s or early 1960s, she says: "The trend probably changed when the cemeteries started closing on Sundays." 12 HP 38" Cut Lawn Tractor mower sSKSTl III Powerful3V4 I I rtT'STJEfrl 1 12 HP, 38" Cut SQQQ 111 I HP engine for I I 1 tV 1 Lawn Tractor 000 12 HP, 38" Cut Lawn Tractor 19 MP annina tarklo arm tultirto. )Ob 6 speod Transmaiic1 transaxle High vacuum dock 96185 Twin Bag SI Oft Grass Catcher 7 1 DO 65 bushel capacity bar syslem will accept garbage bags 9i.340 1 6 HP, 45" Cut Lawn Tractor Bnggs Stratlon twin-cylindof Twin Baa engine "Exlra-laroe 45" dock 5 speod .2 gallon gas lank "'r with in-line gna liltor S5M2 $188 'JC' 95104 (gfflj) ij HOTPOINT JBU Sheriff wants increase in fine for illegal handicapped parking 4,200 BTU, 113 Volt HOTPOINT 11,000 BTU, 115 Volt Air Conditioner High Efficiency operation for lower energy bills Adjustable thermostat 2 speed fan for added comfort Handy Quick Mount installation 50171 18,000 BTU Multi-Room Air Conditioner High efficiency operation to save you money Adjustable thermostat allows you to cool room to desired temperature 3 speed fan for added comfort 230 volt 50028 Air Conditioner Adjustable thermostat allows you to cool room to desired temperature Handy Quick Mount installation 2 speed fan Great for dorm, bedroom, etc. 50149 5,000 BTU 50150 1 97 He said his plan for using volunteers to issue parking tickets is on hold until he gets the money to pay for the program. Money is needed to buy volunteer uniforms, fund the 40-hour class for training and print the tickets.

Deputies are currently issuing parking tickets on an "as see basis" because they don't have time to patrol parking lots, he said. Johnson said he would not use untrained and out-of-uniform volunteers to issue tickets. The Escambia County sheriffs department wants fines increased from $25 to $100 for those who park in spaces designated for the handicapped. If the fines are increased, the money would be used to fund enforcement to protect the parking spots for those who need them, Sheriff Charlie Johnson said. Johnson said he is asking the County Commission to change the ordinance to increase the parking penalty.
