University Schools of Engineering were honored during the 2002 Dis tinguished Engineering Alumni Convocation on campus The awards are given each year to Purdue engineering graduates tor their profes sional achieve ments and related accomplishments The 2002 recipi ents are: JohnMAtal la Atherton Calif chairman and chief executive of ficer of TriStrata Corp in Redwood Shores Calif TriStrata Corp is nuclear en gineering from Purdue in 1967 PURDUE UNIVERSITY Purdue Extension land use team honored Staff Reports The 2002 recipient of the Agri cultural Team Award is the Purdue University Cooperative Ex tension Service Land Use Team The 22 member land use team was the first ever collaboration of county educators and campus spe cialists devoted to working on a public issue such as land use The Purdue Extension Land Use Team collaborates with other state and local organizations in cluding Ball State University In diana Land Resources Council In diana Land Use Consortium In diana arm Bu reau and Indiana Planning Associa tion to develop and deliver time ly educational pro rrramc fn land 11C0 til CUUO VIA vz and related public PURDUE issues UNIVERSITY Rick Chase land use team interim program leader says the biggest ef fort has been providing training for plan commissions in Indiana In the last three years the team has helped train more than 1300 lo cal plan commission members and staff The group also has delivered several programs and re sources to local cit izens elected offi cials organizations and youth fWe have an ex tremely diverse col lection of knowl edge experience and Chase says viduallv we are lim ited but together we have great The team recently put together a Web site purdueedulanduse that offers resources for anyone who has an interest in how decisions are be ing made that affect land use in Indiana online publications and ar ticles offer information that can help the public make better land use decisions and this delivery method allows us to get informa tion out more Chase says The land use team will be hon ored May 14 from 2 4 pm in Whistler Hall of Agricultural Re search Room 116 The team also will give a presentation about their programs and receive $10000 to continue outreach efforts The Team Award annu ally recognizes the faculty and staff achievements of those collaborat ing on interdisciplinary teams The land use team comprises special ists and educators from 11 counties and five educational areas Victor Lechtenberg dean of agriculture says the land use team has impacted the future of many Indiana communities planning is one of Indi top challenges and the out reach efforts of this team have helped rural and local communi ties work through planning and zoning Lechtenberg says diverse group exempli fies teamwork and their
