SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 10 196! EDITORIAL PAGE Letters From 'Is There Somebody Laudable Start ts Made To Preserve Wilderness Considering the tou Questions Marlon Brando Please print Marlon biography including his age Where may I write for his picture? FAN Modesto Brando 37 was bom in Omaha Neb April 3 1924 He has brown hair brown Po litic In Review Challenge In Education Editor of The Bee Sir: At a time when Russia's massive education program has thrust that country far ahead in space exploration and related fields it is shameful that a coalition of southern Democrats should so successfully kill federal aid to education It is all the more incongruous when one considers that in all probability the south has one of the highest illiteracy rates In this country thousands of talented students are going down the drain because they cannot afford an education which would benefit both themselves and their country Students who have received government loans know their value especially in areas where work is scarce or even nonexistent It is hardly conceivable that we can hope to match Russia unless we utilize some of its own weapons It is extremely doubtful the Soviet Union would make the mistake of denying free access to knowledge to promising students when only knowledge can assure it of a continuing position as a world power This country seems to make a habit of such mistakes and at a time when even the smallest mistake can be mortal Federal aid to education hardly can be placed in the same category as foreign aid At least we are assured of a return on our investment from the men and women who are to become the molders of this destiny Without federal aid to education it may not have a destiny WILLIAM CHILDRESS Clovis The Neglected At Home Editor of Die Bee Sir: A television news commentator gave an interesting talk on welfare recently but one thing I have noticed is that the ones who squawk the loudest about giving the aged blind and totally disabled a small raise so the)' can exist or making it possible for a fatherless child to grow up and get an education never utter a word when $20 billion is going to be dumped into the laps of the Latin American countries to improve their standard of living or $7 billion for a shot at the moon or $10 billion pumped into Korea to feed the people there I often wonder if someone goes around in Korea and asks if each child who gets a bowl of rice is legitimate I wonder who the taxpayers think pays these bills Well it looks as if the noble experiment in Newburgh NY is on the way out us the court has issued an injunction against the program 1 guess they figured they should not feed half the world and force the needy here at home to have their pictures taken and put on display to receive their little pittance I suppose this court order will nip in the bud the Richmond Calif plan along the same line It is too bad for it was going to pay $2 an hour and that is more than a man can make doing farm work Several people said they were considering going to Richmond and work for the city THE OLD LEFTHANDER Caruthers 45001' Wtc 3 THE MODESTO BEE Admission Day Is Time For Look Into Future Admission Day generally is a time to look back upon alifornia lusty and glam orous past and to view with justified satisfaction the tremendous and exciting progress which has been made during 111 years of statehood Yet with California des tined before the next federal decennial census to become the most populous state in the Union the time also is appropriate for a look into the future For what is done during the next few years to a large degree will determine what kind of a state California is going to be for decades to come Nature provided favorable geography a mellow climate the mountains and the sea shore the fertile valleys the lakes and abundant rivers What will man do with them? The makings are present to create a civilization a culture a good way of life and an economy unequalled in the annals of the nation and perhaps the world Man also can botch the job shamefully through a lack of foresight and an un awareness of the opportunity to develop the resources of the state for the maximum good of the people Slipshod planning selfishness and greed for immediate profits can easl a lasting blight upon the state And instead of California becoming a show place for the world to see it could be a monument to what might have been and what should not have been done Vision and boldness are essential It will require courage on the part of those dedicated to the public good to oppose the vested interests and I hose who would exploit rather than develop On the facade of one of the state office buildings in Sacramento is the inscription: Bring Me Men To Match My Mountains Never was there a time when this was more to the point California has passed successively and successfully from a land of the pastoral dons to a mining state an agricultural state and now a blooming industrial empire What it may be in 2000 AD defies the imagination This much is cetrain: The planning for tomorrow must he done by men who think big and will act with vigor On its 111th birthday yesterday life was just beginning for California Einstein A Communist? The attack of the United States Senate internal security subcommittee on the Pugwash Canada nuclear conference has drawn a deserved rebuke from the Canadian National Weekly which was more in a position to observe the proceedings than was Senator Thomas Dodd of Connecticut the subcommittee chairman The conference brought into existence largely by the leadership of Cyrus Eaton was attended by physicists and other scholars who are aware of the terrible dangers of a nuclear war In fact the organization of the conference was suggested by Albert Einstein And Dr Wallace Brode scientific adviser to former President Dwight Iisen hower stated: Such meetings can result in more understanding between men than all the official talks at Geneva Yet for reasons best known to itself the Dodd committee attacked the con ference as showing strong and unconcealed sympathy for Soviet policies The Canadian National Weekly states that giving the Pugwash meeting the status of a Communist sounding board is sheer nonsense and the conference communiques generally ran counter to Soviet policy especially on the matter of nuclear tests The newspaper delivers a lament in which all thoughtful people can join: "It's very sad indeed It's enough to make the angels weep ft makes one doubt if the human race has sufficient brains to save itself" The People Commends Editorial Editor of The Bee Sir: I am writing in appreciation i of the philosophy expressed in the well written editorial Jobs Are Remedy For High Cost Of Welfare of August 21st It is important that the public realize the relationship between a growing wet fare case load and unemployment We have studied unemployment figures and noted the close correlation with welfare case load increase time and time again in different areas in the state The emphasis of Governor new legislative pro gram has been toward re habilitation and assistance to train people and thus get them off of aid Obviously it is the untrained minority group workers who suffer most from the disasters of unemployment These people then turn to public welfare when there is no other place to go for help We appreciate the support and understanding of an influential responsible newspaper like The Bee in pres enting the basic facts in the welfare story WEDEMEYER Director State Depart ment of Social Welfare Sacramento Teach The Truth Editor of The Bee Sir In his remarks about Roy idea of teaching our youth what Communism is does Carme mean to imply we should not teach our youth what marijuana is because such education would aid dope smugglers? There are dope that is why we must teach the facts about drugs in our schools There are Communist propagandists and that is why we should teach students exactly what Communism is Is the truth about Communism so bright a picture that when it is laid beside (he truth aboir Democracy Russia will gain converts? Which ideology would be hurt by such Why must the Russians use censoiship iron and bamboo curtains etc? When Democracy must depend on anything less than the whole truth this country will in sad shape JOHN COSNER Waterford Comment On Cartoon Editor of The Bee Sir: You have a very talented man doing your cartoons on the editorial page of The Bee The exceptional job he did on Labor Day must not go unnoticed He portrayed humanity much better than I do in my sermons 1 hardly could look at this symbol of strength his arm with that caption without seeing the Eighth Psalm: "When 1 consider the heavens the work of thy fingers the moon and the stars which thou hast ordained What is man that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man that thou visitest Yes your man has por trayed truth the truth that man is a poor egotist i cal egocentric sinner who thinks he is great when he is nothing without God REV GARY CHRISTOPHERSON First Baptist Church Newman By Carl Somdal 10 170 pounds and is 5 feet 10 inches Recent starring roles include One Eyed Jacks and Mutiny On The Bounty Write to Metro Goldwyn Mayer Culver City First Pass When was the forward pass first used in football? materials obtained from the United States under the Lend-Lease Act were being used in direct competition with American industry in export markets promised to prevent such misuse and to restrict British exports Preliminary plans to reroute Waterford Road traffic in Modesto to eliminate the Grand Street bottleneck were discussed by members of the Stanislaus County Board of- Supervisors arid City Engineer Frank Rossi Numerous violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act commonly known as the federal wage and hour law were reported found in drying yards in the Modesto area by an inspector for the United States Department of Labor Directors of the Oakdale Irrigation District ordered a 25 per cent cut in water usage to conserve what remained in the Melones Reservoir for late irrigation Gopher fU R- mi its 1962 State Campaign out first demolishing in 1962 the similar governmental regime of California where many of those purposes despite persistent GOP opposition already have been realized In presenting this point of view Governor Brown or his speech writer proved to be a better phrase maker than perhaps many of his critics anticipated What the Republicans realize they obviously must do in order lo make a case against the New Frontier he said is regain control of the government of California and return it from a path of "responsible to political dead center In their quest for a suitable governorship candidate he continued the GOP kingmakers are trying to find important'1 ZV hv: slVuBt 1 ouR wottqsy 0 "an engineer for their 19th Century who can be counted upon to put California "back on the track to Ignoring othei GOP candidacy possibilities' for the moment Brown pictured former Vice President Richard Nixon as the Republican high command's candidate" if he can make up his mind later this month Nixon is having trouble in that respect Brown speech suggested because he still persists in seeking 1962 and 1964 portents in poll taking and in the advice of GOP leaders in Washington New York and Gettysburg rather than in Los Angeles Sacramento and San Francisco there a prominent Republican in America who is By Galbraith z' married to golf like daddv prei the public welfare should weigh heavily with congress As passed the bill is significant more in principle than in what it immediately would accomplish The 7 million acres included in the legislation are in 44 national forest areas already classified as primitive or wild But the importance lies in the fact the bill would establish as na tional policy the setting aside of sections of national forests national parks game refuges and other public lands to be preserved in their natural state The ultimate total is estimated at about 40 million acres These lands would be kept roadless and as far as possible otherwise unmarked by civilization The bill drew the violent opposition of some mining timber and grazing interests although it was pointed out by Senator Wayne Morse of Oregon that the legislation would not extend the present restrictions on lands marked for inclusion in the wilderness areas Plainly the lobbyists for the special interests want nothing less than complete freedom to plunder and exploit the public domain for their own profit Senator Thomas Kuchel of California deserves special acclaim for leading the fight against emasculating amendments But then ail of the 78 senators who voted aye are entitled to praise for putting the public interest first Preserve This Record The opening of Modesto schools tomorrow should prompt a resolve on the part of all motorists to keep unmarred a splendid safety record During the 21 years since the Modesto Junior Traffic Patrol was organized only one child has been injured at a crossing guarded by its alert boy and girl members They again will be stationed al their assigned posts near the schools cautioning youngsters to be careful and courteously sig naling drivers to do likewise It will be exceedingly regrettable if in the 1961-62 school year even the slight injury of a child en route to or from school is recorded It will be tragic if one is maimed or fatally injured at the patrolled crossings The fall term opening also is reminder to all motorists to observe the 15 miles per hour speed limit in zones ad-joining schools and to he alert to school buses stop- ping along the streets and highways The flashing red lights of a bus are a signal to approaching drivers that children are being taken aboard or let off The junior traffic patrol will he on the job good weather or bad If you are a driver the rest is up to you What Public Wants American automobile manufacturers soon will be unveiling their 1962 models and from early indications it appears they will make a further bid to wrest the compact and semi compact market from the foreign motor makers One manufacturer is coming out with a new line which will be in between the compacts and standard size models How the people will take to these remains to be seen The manufacturers should not have to experiment with models to lind out what the American people want What the public wants is an automobile with the conveniences and luxuries of a full I sized car the economy of the compacts and the price i Of model Governor Links Making like an intrepid knight of olden times Democratic Governor Edmund Ci (Pali Brown started honing his sword this lost week and promised to go out and kill a dragon For the greater glory he said of California and the New Frontier Sir Pat's dragon of course is the Republican Party pictured as breathing reactionary fire and practicing backward ways of life entirely alien to the 20th Century It was the first full scale public onslaught against the political forces which have been attacking his domain for months past And it was highly significant in that it clearly indicated his blueprint for Democratic survival in the campaign wars of 1962 Governor Brown counterattack delivered in Los Angeles County where Democratic votes and Republican dragons are plentiful formalized a pattern which political observers state and national have been anticipating namely a Democratic contention that if the Republicans are allowed to wound the state administration of California the federal administration of President John Kennedy will bleed Brown wasted no words in linking his own cause with Kennedy's and declared the GOP already has done so The year ahead he predicted will produce the toughest roughest campaign in California history Its importance he said will he felt far beyond the borders The Republicans Brown charged have been hacking away at his state administration for a I three years In that time he maintained many liberal and desirable goals which President Kennedy has set for the nation as a whole already have been attained under Democratic leadership in California The Republicans cannot assail the Kennedy purposes effectively in 1964 the governor argued with- Side Glances By Herbert Phillips ith New Frontier not urging Mr Nixon to run for governor of California?" Brown asked sarcastically "He has told his party his prime concern is with national and international af fairs His party has told him he belongs in The Republicans will close ranks behind a gubernatorial candidate the governor concluded as soon as they can pick one first having settled whether the proper way to do this is a public opinion poll or in a preferential Governor Brown had two recommendations for i fellow Democrats: "We must close our ranks too And we must carry our state record of Democratic achievement to every voter in California and convince the people that It will be to merge the interests of Brown's "responsible liberalism" with Kennedy's New Frontier and to portray a Republican attack on one as an attack upon the basic princioles of both It also apparently will be to depict the national GOP hierarchy as in state politics of California as an essential preliminary to its efforts to unseat President Kennedy in 1964 when California so emo Brown emphasizes be the largest of the 50 states" and presumably will play a role of vital importance in the presidential election There also will be so the Biown camp devoutly hopes some California campaign by the national Democratic organ ization The hope is probably well founded Corner a New tiersman and if he knows you well enough he will give you a dozen cogent reasons why in Pennsylvania Avenue and Hyannis Port circles the reelection of Governor Brown is considered on sober and soul searching reflection to he a political Scoot The Scooters From the St Ijouift Post -Hi spa I li With thoughts that the world is too much with us etc we were ready to applaud Oklahoma's plan for a state park restricted to and up to the final sentence of the report: "The plan calls for each path to be patrolled by a ranger on a motor scooter carrying first aid This was an 0 Henry ending on a Thoreau essay it will not do Rangers on motor scooters are a contradiction in a park for walkers and thinkers At least the rangers will not be walking and the motor scooters offer a poor background for deep thought which requires something like bird songs and rustling breezes Why not walking rangers without motor scooters? The rangers still could patrol the walkets and thinkers on the theory that either activity is so unusual it' requires constant surveillance And we have no objection to the first aid equipment foi those who walk or think too hard A NURSERY Aiy 7 AT 3 ir iipsn.
