Veterans upset over renaming of street LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) Some war veterans are promising to boycott a park during their Memorial Day parade because the City Council renamed a street to honor a city in Japan. The veterans say they won't march into Columbian Park because the name of one of its three streets was changed from Cherokee Drive to Ota City Drive. They are mad that Ota City Drive is in the same park where there is an island honoring Tippecanoe County's dead servicemen.

"We're not asking to be bowed to as the Japanese would," Fred Deck, who served in the Navy from 1956 to 1962, said Friday. "We're asking for respect that is due to us as veterans, and renaming a street in the park is not showing respect." Michael J. Barnes, president of Vietnam Veterans of Mid-North Indiana, said, "I think it's a disgrace to the ones who lost their lives in war." Barnes, 38, said, "It's not just Vietnam vets. I've talked to several people from World War II, Korean vets they're down and out and Despite the dissension, the May 28 parade will continue as planned, said Henry P. Englert chairman of the Memorial Day Association.

The conflict arose when city officials decided to honor their Japanese sister city, Ota, which is north of Tokyo. On April 2, the Lafayette City Council, encouraged by Mayor James F. Riehle, renamed Cherokee Drive. Columbian Park also has a memorial naming the county's wardead. When Ota City Drive was created, Englert and others asked that a street also be considered for veterans.

A compromise was reached. On Monday, the former Crescent Drive a stretch of road similar to Ota City Drive became Veterans Memorial Drive. For other veterans, Ota City Drive reminds them of another local irony: The Subaru-Isuzu Automotive Inc. car-truck plant near Lafayette was built along Indiana 38, also known as Bataan Memorial Highway. Ota, Japan, is the site of a Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.

plant. Fuji owns 51 percent of Subaru-Isuzu. Ota officials also have named a street after Lafayette and have offered to give 150 Japanese cherry trees to be planted in the park. SOU with Opponent sends move 32 years later EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) Henry Kell hadn't heard from his Romanian chess foe in 32 years.

So he was surprised when a letter from Romania surfaced recently. Kell received a call from postal clerk Jenny Taylor saying she had a letter for him from Vasile I. Tacu. Kell had thought of him again in December when the revolution toppled the Ceausescu government in Romania. Tacu's letter to Kell was inside one envelope mailed to the local post office inside a second envelope along with a letter addressed to the "general manager of the central post office." In his letter to postal authorities, Tacu said he was looking for Kell at his last known address in Evansville.

Tacu wrote, "Since 1958, up to now, due to political reasons, I have had no permission to write any letter to anybody abroad and so my correspondence with Mr. Kell has been stopped. "Now that the reign is changed in my country and I can write anywhere, I try to contact my old friend," the letter reads. Taylor said she found Kell on April 30 by looking him up in the telephone directory. As a social studies teacher at TOOL RENTAL We Cater To Contractors Homeowners.

He set an example by becoming involved in the International Correspondence Chess Federation. He and five other international chess players, including Tacu, participated in a round-robin tournament. "I took the initiative to turn it into a pen pal thing with a number of them," Kell said.

One of the pen pals was Tacu, who lives in Ploesti, north of Bucharest. Starting in 1958, Kell's letters to Tacu were refused. "Another fellow in the Netherlands commented his letters also were being refused," Kell said. "We were afraid he might have been arrested, or worse. We were afraid he had gotten into political difficulty Kell, 72, said he never mentioned politics in his letters to Tacu.

"I figured that wouldn't be wise to do." The men used to correspond in French. Tacu's latest letter in French reintroduces himself and says he is able to write again "thanks to the revolution that has delivered my country from a bloody Tacu also sent two chess problems he dedicated to Kell. Last Wednesday, Kell mailed a letter to Tacu. "I told him how interested I was in what had gone on (in Romania) and wondered about him and what had happened to him," Kell said. fill 'ONION SETS MLR MMEN SEE! CMKN FEIHUZEI.
