(AP) Some war veterans are promising to boycott a park during their Memorial Day parade because the City Council renamed a street to honor a city in Japan. The veterans say they won't march into Columbian Park because the name of one of its three streets was changed from Cherokee Drive to Ota City Drive. They are mad that Ota City Drive is in the same park where there is an island honoring Tippecanoe County's dead servicemen.

"We're not asking to be bowed to as the Japanese would," Fred Deck, who served in the Navy from 1956 to 1962, said Friday. "We're asking for respect that is due to us as veterans, and renaming a street in the park is not showing respect." Michael J. Barnes, president of Vietnam Veterans of Mid-North Indiana, said, "I think it's a disgrace to the ones who lost their lives in war." Barnes, 38, said, "It's not just Vietnam vets. "Now that the reign is changed in my country and I can write anywhere, I try to contact my old friend," the letter reads.
