"Our vision forward is to continue our dominance in the mil-aero area especially since we expect increased defense spending, with our industrial markets in transportation, motion control, and supporting base stations," he said. Three New Names in rl si" Friday, September 8, 2000 Amphenol CONTINUED FROM 12B in 26 weeks must now be delivered within a week. Amphenol grew from new technology developed by Swiss engineers during World War 1. A magneto that provides the spark in the ignition system of an airplane engine didn't break down when they allowed sturdy magnets to spin and fragile coils to remain stationary.

The Navy heard of the magnetos and placed an order with the condition that they had to be manufactured in America. The Swiss were looking for a plant at the same time that Sidney was actively seeking an industry to replace its bankrupt automobile plant. Scintilla opened in 1925. After World War II, the business moved from magnetos only to mak- ing cylindrical electrical connectors. With the fall of the Berlin Wall and peace came a move from a dependence on military contracts to industrial uses in mass transportation and communication.

"We took our traditional products and turned them into industrial items. That means a shorter lead time, more customer service," said Ron Campbell, director of mil-aero business unit. still making replacement connectors designed 40 years ago, but we're also designing and building state-of-the-art connectors. Eighty percent of the connectors for the space station were designed here," Paterson said. Anderson said the plant has separated its military-aerospace and industrial sectors.
