I STATESVILLE RECORD LANDMARK Nation Cold Weather And Snow 2 Systems Battering Nation 3By United Press International Two weather systems packing a one-two punch for the eastern half of the nation churned into a fury today with their sub-zero temperatures and snow deluge. While one system churned across the Allegheny, Appala- Pettit Named As President Alvin E. Pettit, 603 East Front Street and director of public works for the city, was elected president of the Statesville Recreation Businessmen's volleyball club last night at the Grace Park Recreation Center. Other officers are Thad M. Harris, vice president, and Jack Springer, treasurer.

Elected to the board of directors were Dr. James F. Rodgers, Reinhold Jalahs, Dieter Finke, Willard W. Overcash and Albert Archibald. The club meets every Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Tel. 872-3691 PAGE 11-A Death Claims M. Johnson Sanford M. Johnson, 81, a former resident of Iredell County, died Tuesday in Norfolk General Hospital after a lengthy illness. A retired paint contractor, he had been making his home with his son, Wendall G.

Johnson, of Virginia Beach, Va. He was the son of the late S. C. and Lillie Guy Johnson and was born May 14, 1886. He was married to the late Alma Saunders, who died in 1959.

Surviving, in addition to his son, are five brothers, Dover Johnson of route: 2, Hiddenite, Latta Johnson of Ft. Lauderdale, Clyde Johnson of Charlotte, Wade Johnson of Denver, and W. Mott Johnson of Washington, D. two sisters, Mrs. Clarence Lackey, and Mrs.

G. S. Pharr, both of route 2, Hiddenite; nine grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Reavis Funeral Home with Rev.

W. T. Brackett officiating. Burial will follow in Stony Point Cemetery. The body will remain at Reavis Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 7 o'clock until 9 o'clock tonight.

Rescue Squad Report Given The Iredell County Rescue Squad, operating from their new headquarters at 1420 West Front Street, answered 28 calls during the month of December. The 28 calls were broken down as follows: 14 wreck calls, five blood relays, one assistance, one eye relay, one pedestrian fatality, three house fires, two false calls, and one search. Also during the month of December, 15 members (honorary and active) completed the Standard and Advanced First Aid Emergency Course given by the American Red Cross. Those completing the course were Ronnie Stewart, Mike Courain, Carroll Starrette, Scott Bunting, Eric Dailey, Robert Overcash, Johnny Eller, Robert Webster, Dewey Benge, Tommy Jones, Tommy Chapman, Paul Campbell, Bill Baynard, Jerry Byers, and Charles Sherrill. During the month of December, the rescue squad logged 844 volunteer man hours of service to the citizens of Statesville and Iredell County.

Court Asked To Bar Guns GREENSBORO (UPI) U.S. District Court here was asked Wednesday to bar the federal government from displaying seized weapons when the conspiracy trial of 11 men opens next Monday in Salisbury. Defense Atty. Webster Medlin of Concord argued in his petition that the display of 47 guns and ammunition seized in a raid by federal agents July 18 would "prejudice the jury against the defendants and deprive them of a fair trial." The 11 defendants have pleaded innocent to charges of conspiring to intimidate school officials and others in Rowan and Cabarrus counties. A 12th defendant has pleaded guilty.

Medlin asked the court to prevent the government from displaying the weapons in the courtroom or any other place where they might be seen by the jury "until such time as a foundation is established for their admission into Duke Aiding Baptist Hospital WINSTON SALEM (UPI)North Carolina Baptist Hospital here has been awarded a $1 million gift by the Duke Endowment Fund of Charlotte. Carter M. Preslar, chairman of the hospital's board of trustees, said a portion of the grant will be used in support of a paramedical school and the new remainder will help finance a proposed 14-story addition to the hospital. He also announced that the hospital has signed a $1.8 million contract with King-Hunter Inc. of Greensboro to construct a new teaching facility, with construction to start by Jan.

15. Bruton Selects Eagles For Post RALEIGH (UPI)-State Atty. Gen. Wade Bruton has appointed Sidney S. Eagles Jr.

revisor of statutes for North Carolina. Eagles succeeds Leon H. Corbett Jt. as ex officio secretary to the Statutes Commission. Corbett resigned to enter private practice.

Eagles is a native of Saratoga.
