Jordan, an alto saxophonist who died in 1975 at age 66, was the pivotal figure in the development of rhythm and blues, which became the foundation for rock and roll. He was among the first to combine the fast rhythms of jazzy swing dance music with the earthy lyrics of the blues.

Jordan holds the record for No. 1 and top 10 rhythm-and-blues hits, and his solo act was characterized by colorful costumes, flashy dance numbers and music with a beat. The lean, emphatic in his songs was known for a time as "jump blues" and has been interpreted over the years by Bill Haley The Comets, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, new-waver Joe Jackson, blues guitarist Albert Collins and B.B.King. Jordan also influenced many other jazz and rhythm-and-blues legends such as Ray Charles and Ella Fitzgerald. In "Five Guys Named Moe," six male perform well- known Jordan songs such as "Let the Good Times Roll," "Caldonia," "Messy Bessy," "Is You Is or Is You Ain't Ma' Baby" and the title number.

The show features blues, swing, jump blues, calypso and conga music enhanced by audi- epce sing-along, call-and-response singing and even a conga line to the Jamaican novelty tune "Push Ka Pi Shi Pie." Throughout the musical, five suave men who have emerged from a radio No Moe, Eat Moe, Four-Eyed Moe, Little Moe and Big Moe try to help a forlorn young man named Nomax win back his girlfriend, Lorraine. Time magazine has called the show "an absolutely joyful experi- ence" and "a rollicking time." The Associated Press has described the musical as "an explosion of talent and merriment" and said it "brings the audience to its feet." "Five Guys Named Moe" was created by Clarke Peters' as a cabaret act in the late 1980s. It captured the attention of producer Cameron Mackintosh, and a larger version opened in London's West End in 1990. The musical then moved to Broadway, opening at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre in 1992. The show has been nominated for a best musical Tony Award.

Charles Augins won London's prestigious Olivier Award for best choreographer, and the musical won for outstanding entertainment of the year. Shakespeare's 'Pericles' at BSU, beginning Wednesday MUNCIE, Ind. Love and malice, birth and death, separation and reunion: William Shakespeare's fairy-tale romance "Pericles" takes a mythical journey at Ball State University. The production features a 31- member faculty and student cast and is part of the Ball State Department of Theatre and Dance Performance's 1995-96 mainstage season. Director is theater professor Judy Yordon, who also has directed Shakespeare's "Macbeth," "Twelfth Night" and "Measure for Measure" at Ball State. "Pericles" is dated around 1608 as the first of four romances Shakespeare wrote late in his life. "The chance of seeing more than one production of this play in one's lifetime is doubtful," Yordon said. "The primary reason seems to be that it is of dubious authorship academics insist that Shakespeare was involved with little more than half of it." The play is difficult to stage because the text contains many inconsistencies, omissions, additions and other problems, she said.

Inspired by a production of the And be kool. Make an JOHNS ring and make it anyway you wianl play at Stratford's Swan Theatre, Yordon has combined different versions of the text to eliminate discrepancies. The result is a drama with universal themes, Renaissance costumes, a whirlwind of seas and cities throughout the Mediterranean and even a jousting contest with broadswords. Medieval poet Cower (student Eleanor Everett) narrates an ancient tale about the loves and trials of Pericles, Prince of Tyre (student Timothy Kane). The play follows Pericles, through celebrations and shipwreck, marvels and miracles.

The story finds the prince seeking the hand of King Antiochus' daughter and then fleeing the king's wrath, marrying King Simonides' daughter Thaisa (student Katie Otterman) and then los- ing her following the birth of their daughter Marina (student Cassandra, Bolander), and learning of Marina's death 14 years later. Other student cast members are Michael Downey as Simonides, Rodney Coe as Helicanus, Josh Coomer as Cleon, Marchele Peterec as Cerimon and Dana Nichols as Dionyza. Faculty members James Hardin, Mark Hillenbrand and Erica Tobolsk! and local youths Steve Polcz, Meredith McGriff and Aubrey Worcel also have roles. Stage combat professional Drew Frascher worked on the fight scenes; assisted by theater faculty member Greg Lund. Other faculty members on the production staff are costume designer Kathleen Jaremski and scenic designer David C.
