Also available are demonstrations in the EAA workshops, showing actual construction of aircraft. Forums are taught by various specialists, including university professors, aircraft designers, aerobatic pilots and representatives from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Why do so many people attend forums at the convention? Schmid said it has something to do with the type of people EAA attracts. "I think most pilots are interested in safety and being a better pilot. They're interested in what's happening in aviation." By the way, a canard aircraft is one which has the stabilizing wing in front of the main wing, rather than behind it.

A classic example of this is the Wright Flier. in esoteric areas of aviation, Schmid said. For instance, there is "Micro-Imp, Bullet, and Ultra-Imp," a forum on progress in paper airplanes. And for the cooks, there's "Cockpit Goodies for Cross-Country Flying." Schmid said forums are usually on subjects that are educational in nature. "Primarily, it's an educational effort," he said.

"Right from the beginning, they have always stressed safety," he added. Forums are especially popular with the homebuilders because kit manufacturers and designers are often at the forums. "It's a chance for fellows who might be interested in the design and get answers from the builder. There's quite a few people, even manufacturers, that come to see what the homebuilders are doing," Schmid said. He said that forums are doing well this year.

"Attendance looks good. Some are even where they're standing outside the tent. Some of these fellows may come early, depending upon when certain forums are. The biggest problem is DAVID GRIST Northwestern Staff Writer Is there something you've always wanted to know about canards, but were afraid to ask? Then why not attend "So! You Want To Know More About Canards" with John Roncz. Not only does the Experimental Aircraft Association Convention and Fly-in have some of the world's finest air performers, but also some of most knowledgeable speakers.

S.H. "Wes" Schmid, forums chairman, said more than 375 different forums will be held during the week. Each of the 10 forum tents seats 400 people. Five general forum tents are set up, plus specialized forums offered in the antique-classic, ultralight, women's, chapter-designee and rotary wing tents. Forums begin at 9 a.m.

Frueh added that it is difficult to spend time now on a thorough review of the public works department, "because now is their busiest time of the year." Th Norttiwtm Vol. 116 Aug. 3, 1983 No. 181 City Engineer Gerald Konrad has been named acting Oshkosh director of public works by City Manager William Frueh. Frueh said today that Konrad will probably also be appointed as the permanent public works director.

But Frueh said he doesn't expect to make an announcement of the naming of a permanent director for a month to six weeks. Konrad, as acting director, will fill the post vacated by former director of public works Jack Schneider, who retired last Friday. Konrad has been the long-time number two man in the department of public works. Frueh explained that he isn't making an appointment of a permanent director now because he first wants to discuss a possible reorganization of the department of public works with Konrad.
