Mefs sweep NEW YORK (UPI) Joe Torre is -making a lot of friends these days the Mets are winning. But one friend, perhaps the Met skipper's pest, was almost strangled after the Mets won the opener of a doubleheader against Philadelphia, ft-5. New York held a 54 lead going into the ninth when with two out, pinch-nitter Tim McCarver ripped a line drive over' the rightfield fence to send the game into extra innings. A wild pitch by reliever Tom Underwood in the 10th scored John Miler.with the game-winning however, and when the Mets took the nightcap 32 on Dave Kingman's three-run homer, Torre was ecstatic. "The guys are' taking things upon themselves," said Torre; obvisously pleased with the team's showing.

"Harrelson (Bud) stole third without getting a sign. (Jerry) Grote bunted on his They took it upon themselves to do the job. They're out there playing and not thinking negative thoughts. Everything is in a positive nature." Torre went on and on about how good his team looked; then started talking about the first game when McCarver, Torre's longtime friend dating back to their St. Louis Cardinal days, hit his home run.

"That was something," said the Met Boss, shaking his head with a grimace. "It's not easy, especially when you want choke your best friend when the game is over." Torre was told that McCarver said it was the first time he ever went to bat looking for a homer. "Tell him he's full of it," repleied a laughing Torre. Kingman's fourth-inning three- run homer gave Craig Swan his third win in seven decisions, and the slugger had some nice things to say; about the Mets for a change. "I like Joe and Mike playing for him," he said.

"It's nice to have someone you enjoy playing for and it's kind of a bad situatiion when you have to go out there and play for yourself. It's very nice to please someone and that's the spirit Torre creates. He just adds enthusiasm and'it's kind ol contagious." "I'm a very good friend of everybody on this -team," Gross said. "I can say anything I want to any of them. You can't say that about very many teams. "They play team ball, unselfish ball. They are the embodiment of the best in Professional basketball," said champagne-drenched team owner Larry Weinberg.

"THESE GUYS have played great all season," said the usually reserved Walton. The big Portland center normally avoids post-game interviews, but he talked at length after the game. "In my opinion," he said, "they (the Sixers) lost because they played a better team. I don't mean to take anything away from them. They're a fine team.

I just think they ran into a better one "This "was one of the best games I've ever played in," Walton said. "A lot of guys played well and it was exciting. Walton won a new car from Sport Magazine when a panel of writers selected him MVP. Blazer Coach Jack Ramsey couldn't argue with the choice. "I've never coached a better player.

Portland outrebounded the Sixers 59-47. Still, the Sixers needed just one basket at the end to send the game into overtime. "We almost did it," said McGinnis who hit'12 of 23 field goal attempts, scored 28 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. "We fought back. It was a great.ball game, a great finish, the best game of the series." But, he added "We would have liked to see the guards get more involved." Lloyd Free, who came off the bench to replace Collins, was O-for-6 from the field. Garner captures tourney NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (AP) The tougher the golf course, the better JoAnne Garner likes it.

"My chances-, of winning are better on a course that challenges me," Mrs. Garner said Sunday after winning the $100,000 Ladies Professional Golf Association tournament over the demanding Wykagyl Country Club layout. It was the first tour victory for the 38-year-old veteran, a top amateur nearly two decades ago. as JoAnne Gunderson, since she won her second U.S. Women's Open last July and it proved again that the longhitting pro from Lake Worth, is at her best on a difficult course.

Wykagyl measured only 6,169 yards for the 72-hole tournament, but Mrs. Garner was the only player in the field able to break par. She had rounds of 72-70-68-74 for a total of 284, four shots under par. The performance earned her the winner's share of $15,000 and boosted her 1977 earnings to $62,134, second only to Kathy Whitworth's $66,032. Miss Whitworth failed to make the cut in this tourney.

Mrs. Garner finished five shots ahead of Kathy McMullen, who earned $9,750 for second place, and six shots ahead of Sandra Post and Jane Blalock, 'who earned $6,065 each for their third- place deadlock.
