DELAWARE COUNTY (PA.) DAILY TIMES Friday, June I2 1970 TI1K A A Family doctor Speaking of Q--What is done during a major operation to keep the patient from bleeding to death? A--In operations on the heart the body temperature is lowered an dthe blood is sent through a mechanical pump (artificial heart) thus by-passing the ailing organ. In all operations, starting with cutting through the skin, each small bleeding vessel is clamped, then tied. Larger vessels are clamped and tied before they are cut. Q--During an operation my heart stopped beating for a few minutes. What could have caused this? What pertinent information should I have put on my medical identification bracelet? A--Cardiac arrest is always an surgical emer- ency because, if it persists for more four minutes, the chance of reviving the a is poor.

It may be At end caused by a to the anesthetic used, stimulation of the vagus nerve or insufficient oxygen in the lungs. This occurs in less than one operation in 6,000 and is not likely to happen to you again but you may want the words Dr. Wayne Brandsladt "cardiac arrest" on the wallet card to which your bracelet alerts medical attendants. Q--What method is used to remove stretch marks? A--If the stretch marks or striae are in an exposed area they can be removed only by skin grafting but most persons prefer to live with them. Q--I plan to have skin planed to remove some unsightly acne scars.

I hear they freeze the skin then use a rotating wire brush to remove the outer layers of skin. Isn't this very' painful? How successful is this operation? A--Freezing the skins act as an anesthetic but some persons are much more sensitive to pain than others. This procedure requires a great deal of skill on the part of the surgeon who must avoid planing too deep as this would increase rather than decrease the scarring. The operation is not as popular as it was a few years ago. Q--My wife's doctor has prescribed Symmetrel for her parkinsonism.

My druggist says this drug is for flu, not palsy. What do you think? A--Although Symmetrel, a prescription drug, was brought out as a preventive against influenza, recent reports show that it is of value in selected cases of parkinsonism.
