Returning to Ripley he opened an office I and began the practice of his profession, the law, which he continued to do very successfully till 1858, when he came to Jackson. Two years later he was elected Secretary of State to fill the unexpired term of B. R. Webb, who died a few weeks after being inducted into office.

He was re-elected to the same position in 1802, and 1864, and afterwards held several offices of honor, among other things being that of assistant State Treasurer, and grand treas urerof the Grand Lodge Knights of Honor of Mississippi, being re-elected to this trustworthy position only a few months since and when he was too unwell to walk to the place of meeting. His friends were legion and his acquaintance extended throughout the State. Tom Sawyer. About 7-3 people ventured out laet night to witness Will Burton's Tom Sawyer, and after the performance seventy of them retired to a private back alley and kicked themselves for going. After the curtain went down the second time the lew ladies of the audience went home.

That served to make Mr. Burton mad and he came out in front of the curtain, delivered a short lecture and told those left that he had plenty of money to pay them back their entrance fee. The show was the rottenest ever seen in Jackson, and it is sincerely to be hoped will never come again. Willi Finger or Whip. Latti Losa, whoe visits are always productive of pleasure, is again in the South and will appear at the opera house here next Wednesday night, December I'nd, presenting her mot attractive play, "Dolly Varden." Accepting as trustworthy the critical estimates made of her work this season it can be asserted that she is in better form than ever before. The Memphis ApjH'rtl-Anihnch? recently epitomized this truth in these words: "She is not the Latti Losa of yore; she is not the Latti Losa of last season; her singing is better, her dancing is better, her acting is better and her general demeanor is more attractive than ever before. There is more rythm, more finish about her pranks and haydeish oddities and every vestige of crudity has disappeared." Latti Losa is almost alone in her line. Jo one ever thinks of comparing her. with any one unless it be with Lotta, and Losa is to-day what Lotta was ten years ago when Brougham called her the "dramatic cocktail." "Dolly Varden" is the best play Latti Losa has ever had and the little star is winning golden opinions everywhere by her work in it Death of Col.

Barr. This morning hen the family of Col. Horace V. Barr sat down to breakfast, he was absent, but nothing was thought of that, as he had been in poor heaUh for several months, and often failed to appear at the morning meal, though for the past two or three weeks he had been up town attending to his business, and felt that he was getting stronger. He retired last night at his usual hour, in apparent good health, but at 8 o'clock this morning, as he had not stirred, some member of tin family went to his room to see what was the matter, and found him dead in his bed, apparently from heart failure.

Col. Barr was an old and valued citizen of Jackson. His face and form has been a familiar one to our people half a century or more. He was hern at Mt. Carmel, Covington county, years ago, and came to Jackson when a small boy.

He entered as an apprentice in the office of the "Old Fhj of the Union" then under the management of Thos. Palmer and W. J. Brown. He was active in politics before the war as an "Old Line Whig," was elected to several offices of trust and honor, and filled them all with great credit.

When the Hag of the Confederacy was unfurled he responded to the first til for volunteers, enlisting with the "Mississippi Rifles," serving as first lieutenant, following the fortunes of the company under Bragg in the Kentucky campaign, lie afterwards organised a company of which he was captain, serving under Joseph E. Johnston, and never surrendered nor sheathed his ivord until the last gun was fired. Since the war he has lived rather a retired life, lie was a man of decided views had the courage of his corvic-tions was true to his friends, his country and his God, being a consistent member of the Methodist church, from which place he will be buried to-morrow morning at 10 o'clock.
