Dear Dr. Mota«r; I have been troubled with sties (or chalazjons) lor several years. They don't come to a head and go away. They just stay. My eye doctor BO sooner cuts one out than another appears. What causes them? What c?n be done? Would allergy "hots help?—MRS. A. M. A sty and a chalazion are net the same thing. I suspect from your description that your By Dr. Molner trouble is the latter, but I'll discuss both. The one point in common is that both affect the tiny and numerous glands of the eyelids. Sties: A sty is an infection caused by the common staphy- loccccus or "staph" germ, a microbe which often lurks' the skin and in the nose. Sties often occur in crops, so to speak. It is important, when a sty is opened and drained, that an antibiotic ointment be on be infected. The patient himself can help things considerably by washing hands and face frequently, and by being careful never to rub the eyes with the hands. Since a focus of staph infection in the nose is common, such eye- rubbing can continue to transfer germs to the vulnerable glands of the eyelids. subject to formation of cysts. * * * Dear Dr. Molner: For some time now I have noticed blood la my sperm. I have no pain or discomfort and wonder If this Is anything serious. I am 64 and in fairly good health. —G.B.L. First aid for a sty is to apply heat (a moist, hot compress) as scon as a sty begins to appear. Chalazions: These are glands which have become plugged and are, therefore, small cysts. Poor nutrition or other health cerned about blood in Where a sty comes to a head, and fluid draining from it spreads the trouble, a chalazion does not come to a head, is not a matter of infection, and dees not spread. If it becomes large enough to be a nuisance, or is painful, the only solution is to remove it surgically. Again allergy treatment will not help. It is true that some people find that after one is removed, another presently appears. This not be sure that blood, is not present other than as you mention. * * * Dear Dr. Moluer.- A friend told me he read that families with dogs were more likely to have cancer, and that dogs were possible carriers of cancer-causing elements. Do you have any knowledge of this? —A.L. Would Bar JFK Book WASHINGTON (AP) _ Rep. Joe Pool, D-Tex., has demanded that the United States Information Agency withhold from overseas circulation the controversial book, "The Death of President." In a letter Monday to USIA Director Leonard Marks, Pool said the book "reflects the distorted point of yiew of an author who has been proven inaccurate and irresponsible as an historian." Pool also took special exception to mentions of Dallas in author William Manchester's book, calling the volume "a dastardly attempt to damn an entire city for the action of a single man, who was not even a citizen of Dallas." Will Appeal Kidwell Verdict TQPEKA (AP) — Fred T. Thompson, defense attorney, filed a motion for a new trial late Monday for Thomas M. Kidwell, convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment on chag- es of the murder of his wife. It took the jury of eight men find four women three hours and 54 minutes to determine that Kidwell, 47, was guilty of first - degree murder in the shooting death of his wife, Betty (Goetsch) Kidwell, in August, 1966. The jurors, who reached their verdict Monday morning after a weekend recess, sentenced the former legislator from Wichita to life in prison. Won't Accept Powell's Check NEW YORK (AP) - For several years the lawyer for a Harlem widow has been trying to collect a defamation judgment against Rep. Adam Clayton Powell. Monday, he refused to accept a $3,438.09 check from the Harlem Democrat's lawyers because it \vas not certified. The check covered the outstanding interest on the award to Esther James. A jury found Powell had defamed her on a 1960 television show in which he called her a "bag woman," or graft collector for police. Once before the congressman's lawyers tried paying off the award by check to Mrs. James' lawyer, Raymond Rubin. He insisted, and finally got, a bank check for $32,500 on the principal of the award. Powell has been paying with the advance proceeds from a record he made, "Keep the Faith, Baby." a long, self - addressed, stamped envelope and 5 cents in coin to cover printing and handling. Readers' quest ons are incorporated in his column whenever pos- No, and I wouldn't give it a second thought unless your friend can come up with dence that the idea was evi propounded by someone who has made a genuine study of it. Repeating notions instead of facts just adds to confusion. * * * Note to Sirs. C.A.: You are right about removal of hemorrhoids but you may be missing a point: If you also have this rectal infection, your doctor would be quite right in wanting the infection cleared up before surgery. Attention all women! Per the pamphlet, "The Pre-Menstrual Blues," write to Dr. Molner, sible.
