MONDAY EVENING, NOVEMBER 27, 196! A I I I PAGE 23 WALTER C. ALVAREZ, Mi). Let's Face It, Men; Women Are Stronger Dr. Alvarez is emeritus consultant in medicine of the Clinic and emeritus professor of medicine of the Mayo Foundation. Every so often I get a kindly scolding from some able woman who asks me why, when writing abou nervousness and neuroses, I always talk about women "Aren't there plenty of nervous and complaining my correspondent will ask.

Yes, of course, there are many nervous and com plaining men, and-many of those who look tough enough at the office or factory or store act like babies when they get home at night and want to lean on their wife's strength. i tendency wives usually resent and tire of There is no question in a doctor's or a nurse's mind that women suffer much more often from nervousness and i complaints and discomforts; In any big business establishment women are absent for illness much more often than men are. Some women are said by the company health service to have "the habit of illness." Some have "the habit of being operated on." Many have the habit of taking to their bed with any little cold or sore throat, headache, muscle ache, backache, arthritis, indigestion, small bruise or small cut. Most men ignore such little illnesses and keep at work. When I was an intern in a huge city the nurses used to hate to be assigned to a woman's ware because, as they said, the women patients made 10 times as many demands on them as "an equal number of men would do.

But here Is a curious fact: In the cases of most diseases, such as stomach ulcers, cancer of stomach or bowel, hardening of the arteries, heart attacks, strokes and kidney diseases, the men'are three or four times as susceptible as are the women. And this susceptibility of the male begins in the womb and Is found in early childhood. For some inborn reason, males suffer from serious disease much more often than- do women and, on the average, men die a few years before women do. This Is one reason why many family hotels are full of widows and why most of the wealth of this country is in the hands of widows. I often wonder how much of the hypersensitivenesi of women is due to their, peculiar training in childhood.

Recently I watched two highly intelligent parents deal differently with a small son and daughter after both had fallen and slightly skinned a knee. The boy, when he whimpered, was promptly told that "men don't cry when hurt" and when he saw that further whining and crying would bring him only contempt and some scolding, he promptly dried his eyes and ran back to play. The daughter was cuddled, petted, kissed and fussed over, and so she kept crying as long as she could. I wondered, If the girl were to be treated as her brothers are treated, would she grow ip as unconcerned about a scratch or bruise or cut as is a football player? The fact that migraint headaches most often strike Intelligent persons is small comfort when is undergoing an attack. To know ways of avoiding migralnous spells, read the booklet, "Migraine or Sick Headaches," by Dr.
